Athletics hasn’t been a priority for upper campus for a long, long, long time. The situation UH finds itself in now probably would have a reality in the early 2000’s had Jones not turned the FB program around.

With no PPV deal in place back then, I think UH killing the athletic department would have been on the table. Under the current PPV contract, UH is guaranteed at least $2.3 million through the end of 2019 (so long as Oceanic gets a minimum of 7 games).

I think they will appoint an interim AD, then start the long process of finding a new AD. I think we will have trouble finding a legitimate AD, though. No decent AD would want to take over a program with the football program like it is without the power to do something about it– fire Chow and hire a new coach, or decide him or herself to keep Chow. Good luck to us all. Imagine being hired to fix something, but you cannot really touch it. Crazy, but that is the UH of today.

With recent mailing and email from Ben Jay asking for money I figure it is more about $. With new upper campus admin I don’t see the kind of support for sports as we have seen in the past. Sports is not a priority.

Why would BJ resign now, but hold his position until next June? Make any sense?

Many will disagree, but IMHO Amemiya may be a good AD – no sports experience necessary; only good management skills and he is intelligent enough to make the contacts and help schedule games – let all coaches schedule their own games – all he has to do is keep track to avoid nasty conflicts on use of Aloha Stadium and the SSC.

When $$$ permit, a “cozy” soccer stadium in lower campus on one of the “grassy” fields adjacent to Wahine SB stadium. Seating capacity of 5,000. Broadcast booth necessary?

I think the new AD needs to change the culture of Hawaii in respect to the purpose of the athletics program. It is not a business that needs to make money but just a part of the educational institution as a whole. I posted some ideas in a Fb group if you click on my name. Hopefully we can help UH right this ship. One person will not be able to do it on their own but it will take the collective efforts of all of us.
