Making the list

The Warriors are trying to finalize the 68-player travel roster for the road game against Ohio State.

Although there are no travel-roster restrictions for non-conference games, the Warriors have tried to be consistent with the limits for league games. Through last year, visiting teams were restricted to 64 active players for MWC games. This year, the number is upped to 68.

Because Rigo Sanchez is a placekicker and punter, the Warriors are projected to keep to their goal of traveling with five specialists. The other three are kicker Mauro Bondi, FG/PAT-snapper Brodie Nakama and punt-snapper Brian Hittner.

Saturday according to Accuweather sunny 71 humidity at 50. Cool breeze at 8 mph. Perfect for a game. Just gonna go do our best all the time each and every down. Outcome really matters not considering all factors. Good to be a Warrior!!!!!

UH 17 – Ohio St 56. Hawaii does not beat the spread (Haw +38)

When was the last time UH had a punter who also kicks the FG’s ?

    FYI, Ohio St. depth chart:

  16. nutmegger September 7, 2015 1:10 pm

I won’t predict the score for the game, but I think UH will beat the spread.

  17. SteveM September 7, 2015 1:26 pm

Happy Birthday to Steve & Wena Tsai!
Both have the same birthday. 😎 Can never get into trouble for forgetting her birthday.
psssst, but if you do, you can say, “But dear, I thought you were planning a surprise…”.

  18. bowwar September 7, 2015 1:39 pm

I believe we will beat the spread…I just hope our offense makes some noise and puts points on the board….

  19. SteveM September 7, 2015 1:41 pm

    RE: #16
nutmegger — I agree about no score prediction for this one. But you and H-Man gave me an idea… IF I were to list the predictions for this game, it would be two lists only (not listing scores):

    1. Those who predict UH will win or beat the spread.
    2. Those who predict UH will not beat the spread.

Not listing scores because there is no prize this week anyway.

Question is, what number do we use for the spread? 38? What is the spread as of today?

  20. H-Man September 7, 2015 1:51 pm

Only BetOnLine has the spread at UH+38. No one else has a spread (yet). Maybe someone can update. I am not a better.

  21. Down with... September 7, 2015 1:55 pm

Beat the spread?…upset of the century more like! Go bows!

  22. seewhy September 7, 2015 2:04 pm

Getting ready for Ohio St. vs. V-Tech kick off!

  23. Shoko September 7, 2015 2:22 pm

Dang, eight plays consisting of runs or passes all by Jones. It’s the Cardale Jones show!

  24. seewhy September 7, 2015 2:26 pm

Hope the UH O-line is ready for the Ohio State defensive front. Brewer is scrambling all over the place.

  25. Shoko September 7, 2015 2:29 pm

I think its fair to say that Wittek will be under duress for a good portion of the game. Just hope he stays healthy.

  26. seewhy September 7, 2015 2:32 pm

    RE: #25 Shoko

    I second that.

  27. st. anthony trojan September 7, 2015 2:56 pm

OSU defense getting gashed the past two drives.

  30. oneseason September 7, 2015 3:07 pm

Hmmm … OSU may be in a foul mood for Thursday’s game.

  31. Shoko September 7, 2015 3:16 pm

Yep, struggle against VT and Ohio going be angry and take it out on the Warriors.

  32. rundown808 September 7, 2015 3:19 pm

Thanks Tom Warrior nation for the hookup to Vegas and info. Good to know. My grandmother before her passing was a big UH Football fan in the 70’s to early 80’s. She and other family members would travel to every game on the road. They were true roadies of the team and that was part of what they loved to do as a family. I wish I could afford to do it and next season will make it a point to travel to an away game.

  33. st. anthony trojan September 7, 2015 3:20 pm

Be nice to hear URBAN speech in locker room at half time…he he he

  34. hitman September 7, 2015 3:22 pm

OSU dont look that great today !! hope a short week pays off for UH !!

  35. Shoko September 7, 2015 3:24 pm

Hmm, Elliot has only two carries. They must be saving his legs for this Saturday. Working the hell out of Jones with 8 carries. Saving JT Barrett for this Sat. too?

  36. leron September 7, 2015 3:27 pm

#15…. M guess is Jason Elam. Anyone know if this is correct?

  37. amela September 7, 2015 3:30 pm

  39. rundown808 September 7, 2015 3:49 pm

Praying Whitten stays healthy. Our OL is not protecting him like he should but he’s a sitting duck. He is not rolling out, moving, or running like he should. Why? Lack of mobility is questioning the knee brace he is wearing. Why? Same knee brace he had while at USC? Is there an injury past or present that no one is talking about? He’s got a great arm and ball and velocity on point. But what is the real reason why he wasn’t being played at USC? Could it have been an injury hindering his play time or chances of playing period. He gained 20 pounds of muscle during his training here in Hawaii. Bigger does not mean better. Especially if you had any injury to the knee. Look at Stubblefield. More weight could add insult to injury. I have to question the strength training program when your adding bulk to a player. Every players frame and abilities are different. Having a strong muscle and flexibility is key. There is a difference between weight room strong and football strong. But theres always a misconception with football. Bigger is better. No its not. Adding bulk can and will limit flexibility in the arms, legs, or hips. Depends on player and position. You can increase strength, power, and speed without using weights or bulking up. Comes down to training smart. Putting extra pounds on Whittek will be a problem for that knee in a brace. I feel sorry for Stubblefield and the injury he suffered. He should have never gained all that bulk and muscle. It limited his ability to run. A WR has to be able to explode off the line and separate. His lower body could not handle the added bulk on his frame, limits his mobility and flexibility when you add muscle. Now when he sprints at full speed and cuts his knees take the beating. Not smart training. Receivers need to be able to sprint, explode, cut and run all day long. You cannot add bulk especially to their legs and expect them to perform the same. Your gonna lose flexibility. Should never use weights to strengthen legs for receivers. Never. I pray Whittek stays healthy. We need him. Is there a reason why a walk on JC QB transfer was added to the scout team on Aug 31?

  40. nutmegger September 7, 2015 3:54 pm

    #19 Steve – Good idea

  41. Willie September 7, 2015 4:01 pm

    #20 This morning’s paper has the spread @ +38.

#30 schedule shoes the Buckeye Warrior game on Saturday.

VT playing real tough at home, going to have some angry Buckeyes I think.

  42. z September 7, 2015 4:09 pm

Not looking good for our quarterback. Woolsey better be ready.

  43. Old School Dave September 7, 2015 4:12 pm

No worries. I heard that Ben Jay will visit the UH locker room and give a pep talk before the OSU game.

“No scared em! Go get em!”

  44. Shoko September 7, 2015 4:15 pm

Brewer hurt left shoulder (collar bone) and is done.

  45. rundown808 September 7, 2015 4:17 pm

Willie, you right. Angry birds not good for UH. LOL. All we can do is pray for the best and pray no fatal injuries. This is a money game and the football team are the sacrificial lambs. With that said. That money deserves to go to the football program. Not toward the negative deficit UH is in. I’m not worried about the win I’m worried about where that money is going.

  46. st. anthony trojan September 7, 2015 4:20 pm

OMG…Old School Dave… me 4-got about our secret weapon there…at the shoe…he he he…he will take all team etc…to Wendy’s there n spring for the tab…you just watch…

  47. z September 7, 2015 4:21 pm

Oh VT qb in arm sling.

  48. hitman September 7, 2015 4:23 pm

if OSU get to max often might be a good change up with Woolsey better legs !!
better to have max ready to go if thing dont go good from the start at OSU for the next game !!

  49. st. anthony trojan September 7, 2015 4:29 pm

While me agree with you rundown808… strange things happen up there…can’t count that out..

  50. st. anthony trojan September 7, 2015 4:33 pm

Be a nice story…if second string QB… comes in n leads VT to a victory huh ?

  51. UHfan808 September 7, 2015 4:39 pm

    Too many weapons.

  55. rundown808 September 7, 2015 4:58 pm

True, St Anthony Trojan. OH QB convert WR just proved at the end of the day talent is talent. Regardless of position. VT walk on RB KILLIN IT out there and earned his scholarship after 1 week. You never know who’s gonna show up knocking at your door. Lucky for VT. Btw, ST. Where’s walk on try out WR Malik Lockett? Let’s not miss the same opportunity.

  56. cappiethedog September 7, 2015 5:06 pm

Ikaika Woosley has a better chance of averting injury than Max Wittek.

    Does Barrett look happy now?

  57. A-joe September 7, 2015 5:06 pm

to the one who truly has made this blog possible all these years:

    Hau’oli La Hanau, Wena!

  58. z September 7, 2015 5:12 pm

We get 1% chance. We get chance.

  59. H-Man September 7, 2015 5:23 pm

VT lost their starting QB for 5 weeks due to broken collar bone. Maybe coaches should plan on playing Wittek only for the first half.

  60. Tiki808 September 7, 2015 5:33 pm

Just off the news, UH will be rewarded if they win big over PAC 12, Big 10, and Big 12. Top 25 material.☕ honored by bloggers like me. Pfff!

  61. z September 7, 2015 5:33 pm

Cardal Jones is beast. VT qb get hit up the middle then is out for 5 weeks. Jones gets hit up the middle gets up then runs for a touchdown. What cha gonna do?

  62. Tiki808 September 7, 2015 5:35 pm

Just football. Not politician next time. You guys don’t know the issues. Labor day and state holiday.

  63. Former UH Athlete September 7, 2015 7:00 pm

Ohio St is really good…. Once they got in sync and once they made their adjustments, they demolished a really solid VT defense.

I think there’s a chance UH may cover the 1st half spread vs OSU if UH can just make OSU march up the field with no explosion plays.

Even that’s a tall order from what I see.

  64. Markazulu September 7, 2015 8:36 pm

A wise man once said ” you play to win the game”

Hopefully chow and company bring there A game…

  65. oneseason September 7, 2015 9:17 pm

VT lost a lot of momentum when OSU injured their QB and the replacement came in for his first college start. But they had some success at the end. Hopefully there will be a lot of improvement on UH’s side before Saturday. CU and UH QB ranking stats from ESPN show them at 104 and 105 of 119, but a lot can happen in a week …

  66. Derek September 7, 2015 10:40 pm

Ohio State can name the score against Hawaii. But, Urban Meyer when at Florida in 2008 beat UH 56-14. So, this Saturday it’s deja vu all over again OSU 56, UH 14. Take the chalk. If UH plays badly, it could be in the 70s. And remember, All America DE Bosa and 3 receivers will be back from suspension. Yikes!

Going on the road has never been kind to UH. Playing #1 is murder. But, the money I’d good.

  67. st. anthony trojan September 7, 2015 10:44 pm

    Yea Markazulu…..the A game is…RUN…RUN…PASS…PUNT…

If most of you are fans of football….n watch the pros… n college…you will hear over n over n over…by former players…buy top notch coaches…if they give him time to pass…he will shred the defense apart…that usually goes for most good quarterbacks….

Me thinks.. best to spend more time honing skills to pass blocking…then run…if u cant pass n QB is rushed…run will be non-existent…

Our A-games is “to establish the run…no matter what ne one says”…
hope it don’t come back 2 bite us big time….

There is nothing wrong with losing…if all tried their best…
But if they prepare the team…to go against the strength of an opponent…they mistakes are being make…that will put the team in jeopardy…injury wise…is not a smart way to go…

Can only hope 4 the best… no injuries…n light up the score board…everyone gets tired… but if ur on top…not as noticeable… n adrenaline…takes over…

  68. Casual Observer September 7, 2015 11:41 pm

Watched OSU and Wisconsin games. Both teams looked big and fast on both sides of the ball. Size wise, UH is not over matched but speed and athletic abilities are a major separation. I’m sure the Warriors are not afraid to compete but how do you do so and try to limit major injuries to key players? And you can’t show up on a major stage and not compete because pride is at stake.

  69. kimo browner September 8, 2015 2:16 am

What was Ben Jay smoking when he produced this 13-game schedule? Next year we play Tenn Martin and MASS. Either way scheduling is insanely illogical.

  70. 3-Prong September 8, 2015 2:33 am

Good Morning from Buffalo NY. Shorts weather today. Off to the Erie Canal & Niagra Fall with 99 other Hawaii Fans! Let’s Go Bows!

Nice little team Urban is fielding this year… believe!

  71. Maddog50 September 8, 2015 3:02 am

OSU got what they wanted with Meyer an SEC team in the Big Ten. Over time problems will surface just like they did at Florida. Just want a fair clean game and at least these refs know what holding is. Go Warriors!!!!!

  72. Maddog50 September 8, 2015 3:28 am

I figured I would ask one more time if anyone knows what the traveling uni’s look like? Again just curious or I will just wait till Sat. Anybody know?

  73. Dapunchbowl Kid September 8, 2015 4:33 am

Goliath looked unbeatable until David met him on the field of battle. Football logic in me says one thing, but my faith in the Davids of the world says another. Play your hearts out Warriors. Leave it all on the field, no injuries and do your best. That’s all anyone can ask. I believe.

Happy Birthday to King and Queen Tsaiko!

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  74. boolakanaka September 8, 2015 6:15 am

Even Goliath needs rest. Today is an mandatory off-day, practice just wed/thursday, and then walk throughs on Friday…if were ever poised for a upset–its this week.

  75. oldtimer808 September 8, 2015 6:19 am

#30 just for your information but the game is on Saturday and not Thursday

  76. oneseason September 8, 2015 6:22 am

#75 … thanks. Brain fart on my part.

  77. oldtimer808 September 8, 2015 6:27 am

Nebraska over looked Hawaii in 1954 and lost 6 to 0. We were 40 points underdog. The previous year Hawaii lost to Nebraska at the Honolulu Stadium by a score of 50 to 0 or something like that. We took 28 players to Nebraska in 54. How did Hawaii beat Nebraska with a bunch of smaller size players who played mostly local teams in Hawaii? If our team can play with unity, heart, desire, perserverance, go for broke attitude and execute than anything is possible.

  78. oldtimer808 September 8, 2015 6:29 am

No worries I have those all the time #30 as the years pass.

  79. H-Man September 8, 2015 7:35 am

If not for this blog, there’s nothing to read about the upcoming Ohio St game.

  80. WarriorNY September 8, 2015 7:39 am

Anyone see any weaknesses in Ohio states Defense last night???

  81. seewhy September 8, 2015 8:39 am

    RE: oldtimer808 #77

I think that upset was in 1955. I remember reading something that they only brought 28 players to that game.

  82. easybruddah September 8, 2015 8:49 am

Rainbow Cliff or any other island transplant: I will be travelling this week and was wondering if you know of any sports bar that you think would be showing the UH game on the BigTen network? Any kamaaina that you know that owns a bar in the Anaheim area? Mahalo!

  83. Maddog50 September 8, 2015 9:46 am

#82 should be no problem seeing that game even if it’s at B W W. Big 10 Network is carrying the game so should be no problem.

  84. UHfan808 September 8, 2015 10:37 am

    Happy Tuesday morning, Tsai-kos!!!

    Wakey wakey hard working, ST!

Loved the OC16 coach show segment on cable past night!

Good job plus everyone looked fabulous! 🙂

  85. UHfan808 September 8, 2015 10:48 am

So I’ve mentioned the concepts of team building in years prior, in terms of the progressions called forming, storming, norming, performing, etc

I have thoughts after seeing the haka performed on TV last night:

We do have talent! During the game, they looked better prepared and a lot stronger both mentally and physically.

In terms of team building, they seem to be out of norming (didn’t see fighting amongst the players or coaches!) and are into performing (getting done what needs to be done and adjusting themselves and each other accordingly).

Last night I watched them upclose do the haka on the coach show and saw the entire team with eyes of the tiger which was a positive self-modification from last year.

To me difference is that last year they were performing the motions of what they wanted to be. This year they seem to BE what they want to be.

I can truly say that I am proud of this team’s progress.

Good job to the coaches staff and players thus far 🙂

  86. H-Man September 8, 2015 11:02 am

Warriors can score passing long if you get CB Eli Apple one-on-one,.

  87. UpIrons September 8, 2015 11:02 am

I live in Columbus and am a big Ohio State fan. However, I am also a really big Hawaii Rainbow Warriors fan because I have ties to Hawaii. I have been looking forward to this game for a very long time and I cannot believe it’s almost here and really happening! As much as I love the Buckeyes, I can’t help but root for the Warriors – they deserve a huge boost to their program! Either way, I am glad the country will finally get to see just what a great bunch of players Hawaii has! Players who don’t have all the resources the rest of college football has yet still get it done with heart and pride! Aloha and if any of you are heading to Columbus and need some advice on getting around, feel free to let me know! Go Bows!!

  88. Da Punchbowl Kid September 8, 2015 11:10 am

    UHfan808 –

@#85 – Wow. Somebody needs to get you up in the booth for the broadcasts of our Warriors’ games. Ya gots me all fired up!

    GO WARRIORS!!!
    BOUNCE DA BUCKS!!!

  89. BigFan September 8, 2015 11:18 am

Urban is known to like to run up the score so I hope we beat the spread. Or by some miracle win. Football is a strange game sometimes so you never know but this would be huge news if we can make it a game.

    Go Warriors.

  90. UpIrons September 8, 2015 11:25 am

One more thing… I cannot wait to see the team do the Haka in the horseshoe. I know that a lot of people in Columbus will be seeing that for the first time and will somehow understand the importance it has not just to the team but the people of Hawaii. It will bring a tear to my eye for sure.

  91. nutmegger September 8, 2015 11:30 am

#85 UHfan808 – Good observations. I also saw the difference in the haka, but your excellent analysis went way beyond my thinking that they looked eager for battle.
