Garcia-Williams wins MWC weekly award

Inside linebacker Jerrol Garcia-Williams answered all health concerns with a career-high 15 tackles, including 12 solo stops, in the 47-27 victory over UC Davis this past Saturday.

Today, Garcia-Williams was named the Mountain West Conference’s Defensive Player of the Week.

Garcia-Williams missed all but two games last season after suffering a knee injury. He completed an extensive rehabilitation in the spring, then moved to inside linebacker in training camp.

    Good job JGW!

  2. Brad September 21, 2015 6:43 am

I know this is not super important but are the Bows gonna wear those same retro uni’s this week or will we see our new away uni’s?

  3. Brad September 21, 2015 6:47 am

I guess the retro uniforms brought back a presence of the strong, hard nose D of the 80’s. Maybe keep um for Wisconsin and hope we can a least beat the spread again.

The school should announce any kind of “white out” or “green out” in advance. They should also mention early if they are going “retro” for the game. Fans want to feel part of the action and would probably buy more merchandise if they had advance warning. Oregon for example announces the whole season color schedule in advance of the season. Bet they sell a ton of merchandise that way. Stands look cool too with a unified look in support of the team. Just my 2 cents on a Monday.

    Go Bows, Beat Da Badgers!

  13. Former UH Athlete September 21, 2015 9:11 am

    Well deserved JGW!

Before the season, I was super worried bout UH’s road trip to Wisconsin, even more so that the Ohio St game. Urban Meyer’s offense is the spread and they cut you up with schemes. On the other hand is Wisconsin, which for ages, play the most rugged, smashmouth style of football that would just wear out inferior defenses or defenses that lack depth. I haven’t been able to watch the 2015 Badgers with their new coach, so I don’t know if their style has balanced out or not.

I just hope the defense can play another quality game and come away clean from major injuries.

  14. Shoko September 21, 2015 9:14 am

    Congrats to JGW!

Game on the blue turf is set. Boise State-Hawaii set for 8:15 p.m. on ESPN2 on Oct. 3.

Hubby likes to wear UH Tshirts — mostly green, some black. No white, however.

If they ever sell UH muumuus, I might buy a couple.

  20. jeezy33 September 21, 2015 9:44 am

ST. My biggest question is why does JGW come out on 3rd down? He is our best cover LB and feel like he definitely should be in 3rd down package.

  21. bowwar September 21, 2015 9:53 am

If JGW was MWC defensive player of the week, then what was Chow’s beef with our linebackers coach, Kurt Gouveia, this past game?? Frankly, I thought the LBs were playing too soft on those 3rd down conversions. Lots of missed tackles…

That corner that got “burned” on the 69 yard TD pass needs to get some training on covering his receiver…Basically, he just let the receiver get by him…Pretty embarrassing.

  22. Derek September 21, 2015 10:05 am

Hawaii was burned on those short passes to the RB on the outside for some good yardage for 1st downs to keep the drive alive by UC Davis, at least in the first half.

I also didn’t understand why Ewaliko decided to return the kickoff late in the game when he was at least 4 yards in the end zone when we should have taken a touchback and get the ball at the 25. I guess he wanted to try to return it for a long one again, but he was drilled on about the 15 and fumbled which Davis recovered. It didn’t matter in the win, but in a close game it would have spelled disaster. Gotta be smarter and thinking young man! He’ll learn.

  23. Maddog50 September 21, 2015 10:24 am

Wisconsin is balanced with a stable of RBs. OL is 6’6 300 plus across. Struggled with Troy St. 2 defenders ejected for targeting. Got to generate O and Blitz on D. I agree with the. Comment of not running it out late in the game ahead senseless

  24. Maddog50 September 21, 2015 10:34 am

Great weather here in Midwest. Sat forecast 76 sunny day 55 low pm. Game time under light figure mid 60s or so. That should help with any fatigue or cramping issues.

    #FreeEwaliko

  26. Old School Dave September 21, 2015 11:00 am

Congrats to Jerrol Garcia Williams! Great story on a guy coming back from a season ending injury. 2-1 is a lot better than 1-2 or 0-3.

  27. amela September 21, 2015 11:05 am

Congrats to Mr. Williams. By the way why aren’t we using the tight ends on pass routes more? It seems that our receivers are having a hard time separating so I would assume the tight ends would be free to roam. Or is it because they can’t catch? Watched the Titans game and I like that they use 3 tight ends on running plays.

  28. iwonderwhytheyhateme September 21, 2015 11:46 am

I noticed Bailey has used a 4-wide formation but instead of a receiver it’s a tight end. I like the idea but hope that we can incorporate that formation using all WR who have the hands and speed.

    #FreeEwaliko

  29. mytake September 21, 2015 11:59 am

UH should run a 2 TE offense. Too bad UH is lacking TE talent.

  30. nutmegger September 21, 2015 12:03 pm

The spread is 24-1/2. I think we can beat the spread.

I’m worried that the team is getting a little worse for wear, but hope the D plays tough like they did against OSU and the O continues to click like the 4th quarter against UC Davis.

Traveling 4,150 miles to Wisconsin is a burden after the 9,000 mile round trip to Ohio.

    Go Warriors!!!

Check out the OC sports highlight on the UH home page. Here is food for thought- Max Wittek completed the following passes swing, out, slant, seam, go, post, drag, fade and I think a dump. Terminology can differ but he is hitting the passing tree or a couple of branches. This play book is not even 50% displayed. Their is more to come to the trained eye. Stay healthy and play to win—–GO WARRRRRRIIIOOOOORS!!!!!

  36. Mike Heisler September 21, 2015 1:35 pm

The Warriors had a great second half against UC Davis.! Let’s hope that carries into the Wisconsin game. Go Warriors, Go Bows!!!!

  37. H-Man September 21, 2015 1:39 pm

I think Hawaii has chance against Wisconsin because the Badgers are not as dominating offensively as in previous years. Without Corey Clement, their running game is good, but not explosive. QB Joel Stave’s passing numbers are up, but that might just be a function of the game plan to sustain a balanced attack. Just hoping Hawaii can sustain its rejuvenated passing attack, plus Paul Harris looks to have found a home at RB. Things are coming together for the Warriors.

    Prediction: Haw 38, WIS 35

  38. Otto September 21, 2015 2:54 pm

Not sure it’s been posted before (if so, I apologize). Boise vs Hawaii will be shown on ESPN2 8:15 Moutain Time

  39. Warbow September 21, 2015 2:59 pm

21, I think Gouveia coaches the outside backers. JGW plays inside. Hawaii was burned a few times on the outside.

    GOOD AFTERNOON, HAWAII!

Nutmegger #30 “Traveling 4,150 miles to Wisconsin is a burden after the 9,000 mile round trip to Ohio.”

Hopefully it isn’t a one way-trip (4,150 miles) or do you know something we don’t know? 🙂

  42. nutmegger September 21, 2015 4:46 pm

    #42 Tom ,

    Funny, but …

I don’t think the return leg will be a burden to playing Wisconsin. The return leg would add to the burden of playing Boise.

It would be similar to the burden of traveling 2,830 miles to Boise after having traveled 17,300 miles to and from Ohio and Wisconsin.

  43. Willie September 21, 2015 4:55 pm

#17 yes she did in a big way, 8 birdies!

  44. Maddog50 September 21, 2015 6:01 pm

A lot about nothin-first it was the “fallout” with a certain coach. Now that Coach is asst. HC. That is a trusted position. CoachKurt is bigman and so isCoachChow. Having spent time on the sidelines as a HC and asst coach in a highly competitive well respect HS league some of the heated exchanges are part of the game. Nobody on that sideline heard or saw anything new. Stuff like that are part of the game period-

  45. H-Man September 21, 2015 6:05 pm

I didn’t have a white Warrior t-shirt to wear for a white-out day, so I went out to buy one. Go Warriors !!!

    Congrats to JGW!

  49. H-Man September 21, 2015 7:12 pm

And long snapper Brian Hittner’s career is over (medical retirement) due to an injury sustained in the Ohio State game.

  50. Derek September 21, 2015 7:28 pm

I think I heard on the animals this afternoon that Trayvon Henderson has a torn ACL and is out foe the season. Did I hear correct? If so, maybe he can still redshirt since it was early in the season without losing a year of eligibility. Take care Trayvon, we need you for the future, ala Garcia-Williams.

  51. Derek September 21, 2015 7:50 pm

Boise St. starting QB Finley is out for the next 8 weeks because of a broken ankle.

  56. kapakahi September 21, 2015 10:03 pm

    #50,

Same report by Hawaii News Now.

Trayvon should be able to receive a medical redshirt since he was injured in only the 2nd game of the season……like Julian Gener received in 2013…..and JGW did last season.

More importantly, hopefully Trayvon recovers for the 2016 season……like JGW and Stubblefield apparently have for this season from their own torn ACL injuries suffered at the start of last 2014 season.

  57. oneseason September 21, 2015 10:11 pm
