Football vs. futbol

The Warriors closed practice today with surprise guests — the Rainbow Wahine soccer team.

They then engaged in a dance-off. Malissa Shadle did the worm. Lance Williams did the splits. Even coach Norm Chow danced.

Afterward, Chow treated both teams to malasadas.

The Warriors are scheduled to depart this afternoon for their fourth road trip of the season.

Among the true freshmen on the travel roster are quarterback Aaron Zwahlen, cornerback Rojesterman Farris and defensive tackle Zeno Choi.

Besides altitude to contend with that Bobby C. mentioned, Stephen said UH has to watch for the cut blocks on the DL and on our defensive backs.

Glad Stephen set us straight on Gib’s contract on the previous thread. On another forum some insist that the liquidated damages provision was written like that on purpose as a disincentive to let the coach go in the latter part of his tenure.

  5. turfwar October 15, 2015 10:50 am

ST I hope you got to share in the treats too. Does the malasada truck make an appearance ? That would make my day.

another cloudy, rainy day in Honolulu

dark, nasty clouds cover the Koolau mountain range and totally raining in Manoa valley – did the weather bureau say it would be drier because of El Nino?

showers are a Hawaiian blessing for the team as it prepares to leave Hawaii – staying over night in LA or SF or Vegas?

in 1968 on my drive from Kentucky to Oakland Army terminal, we were on Route 66 on what appears to be a “high plateau” when suddenly the road goes downhill and there sits Albuquerque, New Mexico in a somewhat large shaped bowl – stopped at the campus to visit my friend’s sister from Ohio – east to west, it was brown and barren semi arid land – yes, north to south also.

    Re. No. 4 islandman:

No, in WSN, it was posted that there was logic to the LD provision in that UH could exercise its unilateral right of terminating w/o cause early in the contract if need be for a lower cost. Although Gib was not implicated in the USC scandal (O.J. Mayo, etc.), he was a part of the staff before hired as head coach by UH.

When UH used to play TCU, Dennis Franchione’s teams cut like crazy. I remember a hobbling UH DB mentioning that a TCU WR targeted the DB’s knees with his helmet. Is there any rule that precludes a defensive player from accidentally kneeing an offensive player who goes for his lower leg in the helmet? I realize that concussions seem to occur when someone gets a knee to the helmet, so the risk for such injury could be higher for offensive players who cut block. On the other hand, is there any rule that prevents a DT from cutting OL to give LBs lanes to disrupt the offense?

Not advocating this – just asking.

  13. bowwar October 15, 2015 12:14 pm

I hope somebody writes it down in clear and indelible ink that the UH NOT hire Gib’s son or any of his kin to be the next UH BB coach to “clear his family name.” As far as I’m concerned, it is clear that the Arnold name will forever be “tarnished” in the memories of UH BB fans. Arnold was a “slick talker” who took fooled everyone in regards to his sincerity…

As the old adage says: “Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. There is NO third time.”

Half time feature during the Auburn vs Kentucky game on ESPN addressing interim HC Elliot of the South Carolina Gamecocks. The guy is upbeat and positive. Announcers said he has been with the SC football program for 6 years now, this is a good thing for the players as it brings continuity and comfort. Positives mentioned about rallying around the cause for the team to come together. Nothing said about Spurrier abandoning the team or the seniors being shafted.

#4, thank you for mentioning our host’s explanation of the BB contract mess in yesterday’s blog. I took a break yesterday from the news because the breaking news teasers about the settlement got me too steamed. And thank you to ST for the explanation. What a mess.

#13, agree. There’s reasonable compensation, and then there’s being so over the top that one wonders about vindictiveness.

UH sure needs a better process of vetting contracts (and applicants), and those who hold the purse strings need a more realistic appreciation of how hard it is for a state school to gather the funds used to help **student**-athletes finish their curriculum requirements and earn their diplomas.

Gib is “only” getting $500,000 and his attorneys $200,000. But UH has to pay the UH attorneys $250,000. $100,000 will come from UH insurance.

Good payday for the attorneys. The former UH Counsel who was in charge when Gib’s contract was drafted was a former partner of the UH attorney McCorriston and has rejoined the firm, i think. And Gib’s attorney Bickerton was also a former partner of McCorriston. Is this a conflict of interest somewhere ?

Someone who sits next to me and calls himself Ferd says something about UH having a litigation fund. Sounds like it’s something like malpractice insurance. So I don’t think the payout comes from athletics. 1) That’s smart. 2) Gee, no confidence in the house lawyers?

  39. Duster October 15, 2015 6:05 pm

    #29,

Was Bickerton with the McCorriston firm, or are you referring to the time when Bickerton and McCorriston were with the Goodsill firm?

If I’m not mistaken, the current UH General Counsel is also former a partner of the McCorriston firm, who left to become C&C of Honolulu Corporation Counsel. And she attended the Board of Regents meeting to get BOR approval of the settlement.

Can’t say there’s any real conflict at this point since those attorneys have not been in the same firm together for years. However, it certainly raises eyebrows.

  40. Willie October 15, 2015 6:41 pm

TV news noted that insurance coverage for the Gib settlement maxed at $100,000. Rest of the money from UH coffers, same place that funds come from for UH facility maintenance and repairs. So the athletic department not affected, but it is still public funds that surely could be used on campus. News explanation was pretty simplistic, basically because of dismissal not for cause, Gib entitled for the rest of his contract. How the heck did the person or persons making the call for the not for cause reason do this?

Now to better prepare for this type of situation not happening again, they will have two attorneys and also the new Legal Counsel VP review al contracts. Wow, that’s all we need more attorneys to stir the pot!

  41. islandman October 15, 2015 6:43 pm

    39. Assuming the liquidated damages provision was a mistake by the UH legal counsel and/or others, McCorriston and his firm , which Ms. Lendio has rejoined, is profiting from this mistake by $250,000 or whatever he is being paid. There would have been no claim by Gib to $1.4 million and no need to pay so much to lawyers, if he were to be paid only for the remaining amount of his salary when he was terminated as most contracts are written. Bickerton is also profiting from the mistake as he is getting $200,000.

  42. ai-eee-soos October 15, 2015 7:06 pm

    # 41. islandman October 15, 2015 at 6:43 pm

” Bickerton is also profiting from the mistake as he is getting $200,000. ”

    Yup, he sure is profiting.

BUT, I read somewhere, that Gib’s lawyer (Bickerton?) wrote the contract that way, to get all that money.

smaht buggah – he outsmart the UH (non) Counsel.

I can see why UH chose Norm Chow as their head football coach in 2011. Chow was a very successful football coach coaching many top college teams as the offensive coordinator and even coaching for the Tennessee Titans when they made the 2007 playoffs. After that Chow now applying for a head coach position was interviewed by many colleges. None took him except UH. After coaching UH for two years with only four wins for his first two seasons I thought that he was gonna be fired. But board of Regents at UH Manoa had and still have confidence in his coaching. I very strongly disagree. The Board of Regents should have done something about him a long time ago. But since he’s had so much experience and success the Board of regents or the Athletic director should move Chow down to Offensive Coordinator (where he does best) and bring in a new coach. If UH doesn’t do anything soon about their football program it could possibly diminish into nothing if it hasn’t already. Its hard to think that just in 2007 UH was one of the best football teams in the nation with just one loss that whole season compared to UH’s 2014 season with nine losses and just four wins. Basically what I’m trying to say is that The Board of Regents needs to pull it together, Norm Chow should move to offensive coordinator or get fired, and bring back June Jones. Maybe June Jones could even be the offensive coordinator too. Jones is an unemployed coach who deserves to coach UH way more than Chow.

Gib’s contract agent was/is Russell Kaupu, not Bickerton.

I also assume that the $200,000 in attorney’s fees do not all go to Bickerton. Some if it must go to the mainland lawyer Gib hired to address the NCAA matter.

Part of the rationale for Gib to take less is to defer part of the payment over time for tax purposes. It must also allow UH to “raid” the litigation fund with amounts they budget each year a payment is due, instead of depleting the entire fund this year. The mediator apparently looked for creative ways to achieve a settlement beyond the typical negotiation of a lump sum payment.

    51.

A novelist named Sherman Alexie published a collection of short stories called “The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven”.

Alexie, a Native American writer is a literary heavyweight, and somewhat of a jerk.

He came to UH and antagonized the audience.

    Best lecture I ever attended?

    Iris Chang.

She wrote “The Rape of Nanking” while still a graduate student at, I believe, San Francisco State.

Reports say that she died in her car from a self-inflicted gun shot wound, but there are conspiracy theorists out there who believe that she was murdered.

    He dissed spam.

He also smugly said that most of his people are illiterate and that his fanbase is largely white women.

“But since [Chow] had so much experience and success the Board of regents or the Athletic director should move Chow down to Offensive Coordinator (where he does best) and bring in a new coach.”

unrealistic. Norm Chow signed a contract as head coach. I don’t think you can demote him to offensive coordinator without firing him and writing a completely new contract, and that would require chow to agree not to take a buyout, agree to the terms of the new contract, and agree to the demotion. He would most definitely reject it, and rightly so.

also, if/when a new head coach is hired, it’s almost guaranteed that the entire current coaching staff will be looking for new jobs. Head coaches want to bring in their own staff and mold the team to their vision. They may not buy in to Chow’s Run n Punt offense and want to keep him up in the booth as OC.
