I agree that SMU has a lot more $$$ and staff to assist the HC in recruiting and UH was definetely behind the 8 ball.

However, do a Jr day and going on home visits on Oahu and neighbor islands or visiting high school coaches/schools would not put a big dent in his budget? I will agree that a $50,000 recruiting budget is very small and reason that the Maloof brothers donated $25,000 to UH for recruiting 2 years ago after they met June Jones in UNLV.

I can not help but think that some of the significant “donations” during Coach Mack’s tenure came because UH has a new Athletics Director. One person who was instrumental in securing a huge donation told me that as long as Fumbler was AD he would never ask the donor to consider UH.

Hawaiian Airlines has always been a major corporate sponsor for UH, but only last year they donated XXX air fares for Coach Mack/staff to take trips at no charge. Why? Coincidence or not?

It has been written that HF did not secure any $$$ for UH.

Even in this terrible economy, there are many ways for the “business” sector to make contributions to UH sports. All they need is for someone to call and pay them a visit with a plan. Or, someone, in position of power at UH, can make a public plea for donations. Is it beneath their feet to do so? That would be a shame if true.

Mac has shown what he can accomplish with a recruiting budget that is approximately 3x what JJ had, not even counting what Tony Tuioti makes. Of course, some things of the things that he is doing (like home visits) do not cost much at all to do, but others (coaches flying all over the mainland for recruiting) do take a lot of money.

SMU already had a director of football operations and has probably no limit on its recruiting budget. I’m assuming that the director of football operations does a lot of the legwork for the Junior Days, just like I assume that Tony Tuioti did a lot of the planning for UH’s Junior Day. Did you know that SMU’s basketball coach flew to Croatia to meet with the parents of a recruit? The recruit ended up going to Purdue, but being able to do that without worrying about the budget stood out to me–when UH was getting volleyball and basketball recruits from overseas, I don’t remember the coaches doing home visits in Europe!
