Finally – after only a 16-month delay ….

MANOA (HawaiiNewsNow) – The new Warrior Recreation Center at the University of Hawaii at Manoa was supposed to be built by December 2012, but the project has been plagued by delays. The facility is finally set to open next month, but some students who have been paying for the center told Hawaii News Now that the grand opening is too late.

UH seniors Alex Saunders and Hank Dorrance are eager to check out the facility, but they’re graduating about a month after the April 11 opening date.

“I’ve seen it go up. They started blocking off stuff on the side. Now it’s almost done, but it’s a little too late for me,” said Dorrance, a business student.

“It kind of sucks, but I guess it’s just part of construction. Sometimes it happens. It would be nice if it hadn’t. I know everyone’s been excited about it for awhile. It’s a good selling point for UH,” said Saunders, a business student.

The $33.9 million project is now 16 months behind schedule. The delays were due to factors including design and contractor performance-related problems, subcontractor bankruptcy issues, and unforeseen site conditions, according to a UH spokeswoman.
