Thank you for your depth of understanding and compassion shown in posts #275 and #276 regarding Colt Brennan.

I wonder if some of these posters truly know what it means to have 30 plus bones broken in your body and have head injuries so severe that it causes scarring on the brain. Trust me, if you’ve never had those kinds of injuries or if you are not a medical expert in the field of neurosurgery or neurology, YOU HAVE NO IDEA!

What Colt suffered is comparable to or more severe than what many of the members of our armed forces suffer in the heat of battle. Brave people, patriots all, who sought to serve our country and sacrificed so much in doing so. You’d be amazed at what many of these heroes, tens of thousands of them, have endured as a result and how many of them end up in prison or homelEss in the streets because of behavior changes brought on by PTSD and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). It is something which cannot be helped by those individuals, they are not making bad choices or excuses – their brains simply do not function properly and they cannot control how they behave. Their mechanisms for processing, reacting to and navigating through life are either severely impaired or non-existent. True, some can overcome the effects of TBI with proper support from loved ones and good medical care but more than 85% are unable to return to the quality of life they had, either in relationships or work, which they enjoyed prior to their injuries. Drug and achohol abuse becomes a SYMPTOM, not the cause of their TBI and they suffer as a result. Colt Brennan represents a text book case in this scenario. The NFL has many similar stories about strong, brave men who suffer concussions or other TBI and their lives are changed much for the worse as a result.

If anything, credit Colt Brennan for having the guts to share his story as a cautionary tale in some respects and as an explanation which he feels is due to the people of Hawai’i, whom he obviously loves deeply. It took a lot of courage to face the cameras and lay his soul bare like that. If you need a reference as to what Colt is truly like as a person, let’s not forget that this was a young man who left $25million or so on the NFL’s table so he could could return to Hawai’i and play to represent Hawai’i and its people during his UNDEFEATED senior season. Who here can say that they would have had the heart and the courage to do the same?

If you don’t think that his TBI and other injuries have played a major part in Colt’s “downward spiral” you are gravely misinformed. Colt gave his best to Hawai’i and deserves more respect than is being shown either by that “story” or by some posters here. He is not perfect and knows he has some challenges ahead. He is flawed hero, true, but it is only fair to him and to our state that his story be viewed with proper context and understanding.

I pray for Colt and his future and wish him all the best. I urge others to consider my points here and to do the same.

GO WARRIORS!!!
