The non-profit I work for has had its 501c3 status since July, 2004. Although we had the amended paperwork completed some 18 months earlier, it took us some 15 months to raise the filing fee through a garage sale and two malassadas sales. Then, it took another two-plus months for the IRS to okay everything.

Alas, no HI-5 Drives back then – our first one was in early January, 2005, as soon as the law went fully into effect.

Or are you talking about creating a non-profit just for the Tsai-kos? When I raised that issue almost two years ago, there was little interest in doing so. Back then, people preferred to keep things informal.

I just helped form a 501c3 for a community organization. I was able to get a volunteer attorney/CPA and the cost to file was $750 plus the cost to set up the state non-profit – total just under $800.

The way it was explained to me in the spring of 2008 when I talked to `Ahahui Koa Anuenue – things may have changed – is that all donations are fully credited to the donor, but each donation has a sum taken from it for administrative costs so the recipient of the contribution received a net figure – the admin fee plus fees for PayPal and credit/debit card charges if used. Check and money order fees may also be charged, but the donor pays those before transmitting the payment to AKA.

I was also told last spring that individuals who contribute to AKA for a specific fund – let’s say remodeling the coaches’ offices – would receive full credit, but each time the same donor wrote another check for the same project, AKA would take another admin fee.

With respect to the SERVING UP 1,000 Fund, there is no reason why individuals here cannot make donations right now. However, what we were looking at is to see if we can make this a Tsai-ko Fund Drive.

Anyhow, let me clarify what the options are here and then folks can make an updated decision about what to do next. In the meantime, fully-deductible contributions can be made by individuals for any current fund set up within the Athletic Department.

Off to bed – see y’all in the morning. Hope Santa can find your place if you don’t have a chimney.
