Body count
In the past weekend’s game, it was noticeable that the Warriors — not top-ranked Ohio State — went to the reserves first. For the Warriors, the moves took strategy and restraint.
The Warriors used only 59 of the 68 players on the travel roster. They held out some freshmen — such as linebacker Solomon Matautia, long-snapper/linebacker Noah Borden, and quarterback Aaron Zwahlen — to keep alive their redshirt possibilities. The Warriors, who already were down a linebacker, would have used Matautia if they lost another one.
Because of budget constraints, the Warriors capped their travel party. That meant they were short on equipment specialists, student trainers and, of course, practice players. The roster difference is apparent for this week’s home game, with the Warriors having full practice teams to compete against the offense and defense in preparation for UC Davis.
The Warriors might consider using revenue from the so-called money games — $1.2 million from Ohio State, $1 million from Wisconsin — to add to the travel roster.
Vood Morning Tsai-Kos!
Ooooops, spelling not very good on an iPhone. Good morning from the Northwest!
Stephen are gonna see any help from Jc lineman on either side of the ball anytime soon
Sometimes you have to spend money to be competitive. Competitive leads to improvement. Improvement leads to more wins. Wins lead to more fans. More fans lead to more money. Come on UH Administration and open your eyes.
I met our Chancellor at the Alumni function. Kept saying he was blown away by the amount of UH fans traveled to Columbus for the game. Was this his 1st away game???
“Vood” is in the Urban Dictionary. It means: “an utterance of disgust, usually after an idiotic, inappropriate, or otherwise uncalled for comment.”
Seattle-based, right?
I read this extremely funny novel called “Where’d You Go Bernadette?” by Maria Semple, in which the setting is Seattle. Sends up the Microsoft culture really well.
Ex-Hawaii basketball player Manroop Clair plays for Seattle U.
Yes, just north of Seattle in Lynnwood
Megan Huff quits volleyball.
I was hoping for this.
Who had the best game in the Big West final against Cal-State Northridge, I mean, CSUN?
16 pts. and 14 rebounds.
She kept them in the game while Shawna Lei-Kuehu struggled to find her range.
Huff made Connie Morris better when she joined the team mid-season.
Morris was noticeably better after Huff joined the Na Wahine.
This is great news for Coach Beeman, especially with a tough non-conference schedule.
They are now poised to upset one of those ranked opponents.
I think Aloha Stadium is up high enough not to be bothered
by a tsunami. Hope our offense clicks like it did on its first play
at Ohio State. Come on guys, you can do this.
You See Davis 21
You See UH 56
UH will easily score four touchdowns in first half.
And the subs will score four more in the second.
🙂
Happy day after Typhoon 🙁 weather 🙁 Day!
Stay safe n dry wherever you may be!
Great news that Gener is back.
Any word on TE Tui Unga?
People in Hawaii take football seriously.
Lots of careers are made and broken because of what happens on the field.
Me? I am listening to Corelli violin sonatas while reading the Warrior Beat.
Lol.
Stephen any word on when we might see Clement, Norman, Akoteau. All JC guys and was hoping to at least see them on the depth chart. Any insight?
In case anyone is interested, UC Davis arrives this morning around 9:35AM on Hawaiian flight 19.
Hawaii 31
Davis 16
Any word on when we might see Clements Norman or Akoteau? All JC guys would think at some point in time they would make the depth chart. Any insight
Those JC guys that are mentioned, if we’re not playing ’em hopefully they have their RS year available
To my knowledge they do but we need some depth on OL and DL also give some of the guys a spell especially on D
Good morning, Tsaikos!
So is Matautia above Russell Williams on depth chart?
For what its worth, Russell Williams played in game 1
#20, Not sure they play the same position. One may be inside and the other outside.
Good to see our blog host back in business. Hope all is well with the family Mr. Tsai.
I thought Russell Williams played inside, same as Gener.
13 Maddog
Norman is fine, they want to redshirt him this year, to add some weight. He was ready to back up Hollis but the staff chose too rs him, he is ok with.
UH 42 vs UC Davis 21
Warriors 38 – 13.
GO WARRIORS!!!
Prediction uh 45 aggies13

UH 35

Thanks ML Warrior kids got a good frame but 250-260 is too light to play that pos. so now Clements and Akoteau update from some source.
Hawaii 24
UC-Davis 3
#28: That’s what I was wondering too. Not on roster.
In light of next week’s game against Wisconsin, Tanner McEvoy is scheduled to start at both WR and safety this week.
#28 – Russell Williams

41-24, bows chalk up W number 2.
They throw the ball a lot and give up a couple hundred yards rushing. Pressure and picks on D. A fast paced combo attack on O. Coach Bailey needs to be all gas no brake on this one. 7 plus TDs at a minimum with limited errors. Make it personal and keep it that way all day all year!!!!GO WARRRRRRRIORS!
I think the Davis game is a big one for the offense. They need to break out, look dynamic, score easily and often. If they don’t I will be disappointed and it will not bode well for the Wisconsin and Boise games. This game is their chance to find their rhythm and build some confidence. I think they have the players to do it. They just need to put it together. If they can’t clearly start the process of putting it together this Saturday I am not sure when they will be able to do it. We have a little catching up to do with the 75 TD goal.
Hey all,
I just wanted to thank all of the Tsai-ko’s who have been so inspirational and supportive in a really difficult time for me.
DPK, SteveM, Tom, LizK and everyone have been so supportive, I can’t help but tip my hat to all of them and to the hosts of the blog for being conducive of an atmosphere like this…
It really means a lot for strangers to love strangers with the love and aloha i felt last week….
Thank you all again…
Need to fix the run game. It all starts up front. Need to rest the broken. More players need PT. We have to develop our depth. Can’t just wait until players get injured to give others some time. We may find some playmakers in the process.
When you listen to the commentators with NFL background comment on wide receivers they don’t usually start with the player’s height or speed. Rather I hear them say “he is an excellent route runner”.
I believe our guys are not there yet as there is little or no separation and what looks like a lack of aggressiveness to go after the spot and ball.
They need to work on that piece of the puzzle. Being tall and fast are great, but if you’re not a good/great route runner, that attribute is minimized.
StveM. Hawaii 23, Oddaguys 15
Warrior offense hasn’t shown it can sustain drives (yet). So for now, I am calling a close one this Saturday.
45-24 Us of course!
SteveM Us 31 Them 14
Barnes and Nobles hotspot works fine.
Did they practice today?
Buffoman thank you, thank you, thank you for saying it. Receivers have to be technicians on the field. Speed is not the only factor. Running crisp routes to seperate and catch the ball takes skill. Agility is a big factor. Ability to change directions at different levels of speed when you have a defender on your tail. It’s all about seperation, commentators pointed it out. At this level this should be automatic. And last but not least catching the ball. Must catch the ball. Some have better hands then others, some have to work, some just got it. If the ball is in the vicinity, they will catch the ball. It doesn’t have to be on point. They will be aggressive enough to give up their body to do it. And the receiver position is mainly held by so called divas as they call them. They just want to look good while catching the ball. But a skilled receiver will look for work at all times not only when they get the ball. They will block, sell their routes when the ball isn’t coming to them, and if the ball gets intercepted they automatically become defenders. Looking the part is different from being the part. running good routes takes time to develop. Can take years. Then there’s a player who will come along who was born with that skill set. A gifted player like any sport. Who will have it all. These are the types of players to look for. Don’t just look at their height or stats. Talent breeds talent . You bring in quality players you will get quality out of the team. Mindset changes. Team. Those who think they don’t need work will know now. They need to do work!

Hawaii 63 UC-Davis 7
aloha everyone !!
UH 63-17 UC-D
I was at the CU game didn’t see the OSU game except for a few highlights. From what I’ve seen I would venture to say this is a rhythm offense whose formations are designed to spread the defense and make the middle of the field vulnerable to quick hitting running plays between the tackles. In my opinion ours is a run to set up the pass offense. Or at least that’s the way it was sold to Chow.
Once we get our running game going things should fall into place. With only one back quick outs, wide receiver screens and short quick passes to the TE are used to supplement the running game and keep the box uncluttered. We’ll start to see a real up tempo game once we can get chunks of yards between the tackles.
This is the game that the offense will show it’s true potential.
#44 Russell Williams got a lot of game reps in the 2nd half against the Buckeyes.
Maddog,
Both Clements and Norman did not suit up against Colorado……so probably didn’t trip to Columbus.
Akoteu is a true frosh……not a JC guy…….and was wearing a boot during the last week of Fall Camp……nor did he suit up against Colorado……so probably a redshirt candidate.
Kapakahi, thanks for the info. My asking is for obvious reasons. One or two of these guys will be needed like it or not, but for now it gives them times to heal and develop. Annudah ting—I have so many favorites on this team it’s not funny, Benny F is gonna have a great year and reall look to Meffy and Leo being big contributors. UCD is gonna score 14 points or more historically over the last several years they do that. I agree with the numerous assessments regarding our offense. Bottom line we gotta get a bunch this week and it will not come easy because of what they have. It will be a hard fought effort. But should end up with a. Bunch on O. Would love to SL and DSJ return to form along with Harris and Davis. Don’t forget Justin V out of the backfield he’s can produce change up first downs on swing routes. Looking to go 2-1 with a bangeeee gangeee!!!!
If we keep the starters in, the defense can pitch a shutout with Davis as long as offense cuts the turnovers. But I think with no byes and tough games ahead we will develop depth and rest defensive starters. So Davis scores 1 TD against lineup with several defensive reserves. Davis 7
Offense has not shown itself in two games so far, therefore pressure is on to improve in every area and make things happen. Would be good to rest starters on O but they and the best offensive players need work. Not ready to score 40-50 points yet, but big step– score every quarter and then some. Hawaii 38.
UH 42- 3
23 – 7 UH
