I think when you are void of any Ws, it place a creative cramp on your play-calling, but moreover it makes us all a bit timid, until you can get over the hump.

Hey, even Seattle looked a bit underwhelming yesterday–my point being, when things are not going your way, 2nd guessing becomes part of the struggle.

There were 18 UH drives. For the first play, there were 12 runs and 6 passes (on drive #13, there was a touchdown on the run). For the second play, there were 10 runs and 7 passes. For the third play, there were 8 runs and 9 passes. Overall, there were 47 runs and 39 passes; however, 11 passes occurred on drive #8. The offense also appeared to run more frequently on first down if they had good field position.

Higgins came in for drive #12 with 3:47 left in the 3rd quarter, and threw 3 passes for that drive. Drives 13-18 had a total of 4 more passes thrown by Higgins. I would like to understand why the offensive leadership changed quarterbacks if they intended to run the ball at the end of the game.

Regarding offensive scoring:
Drive #4 started on the UH 11 and resulted in a FG
Drive #6 started on the UH 20 and resulted in a TD
Drive #13 started on the UNI 30 and resulted in a TD
Drive #17 started on the UNI 20 and resulted in a FG

Drive #17 started on the UNI 20 because UH special teams recovered a UNI fumble. 3 runs gained only 1 net yard, and then UH special teams kicked a field goal. So it really seems that the offense delivered 17 of the 27 points scored.

Below are the Drive #, starting yard-line from UH end-zone, Play #1, Play #2, and Play #3; R = Rush, PA = Pass

D# SY P1 P2 P3
1 40 R R R
2 36 R R PA
3 35 R R PA
4 11 PA PA R
5 28 PA R R
6 20 PA PA R
7 20 PA PA PA
8 1 PA PA R
9 28 R PA PA
10 59 R PA PA
11 45 R PA R
12 42 PA R R
13 70 R “-” “-”
14 25 R R PA
15 41 R R PA
16 30 R R PA
17 80 R R R
18 42 R R PA

There’s nothing wrong with playing to protect your lead. On his show he called it playing field position. The problem I had was he started playing the field position game from the start of the second half. The priority in playing calling was not having the QB make a mistake and turning the ball over. Both QBs were on a short leash. Bottom line is you can’t argue with the bottom line…we won.
