Graeme Scott, Manager Sport Development — New Zealand Golf, was selected as an international guest official at the British Open.
“As an international guest official at The Open you have a fantastic opportunity to extend your knowledge of the game by working closely with The R&A staff and the full time tour staff in attendance”, Scott said.

“One thing for certain is that every one of the Rules Officials at The Open is extremely passionate about the game and not only enjoy a good discussion on a range of topics but also take the opportunity to find out about what systems and new initiatives are in place around the world,” he added.

“People have said to me that a 35 hour trip across the globe for a golf tournament must be a gruelling journey but personally I can’t wait to get to Turnberry and soak up the atmosphere. Having never seen the venue before there will be a fair bit of leg work and preparation to be done before the first ball is struck on Thursday.”

Scott will be assigned to follow one of the pairings in the Open.

He had personal commits including attending a service of a deceased friend, another tournament he had entered and had made plans w family, not figuring he would Q for the Brit Open, plus he did not bring his passport, etc. Hey, the charter was good for $1000 USAD plus 3 family members, non-stop to Glasgow International, 51 mi from Turnberry. An incentive put together by the John Deere organizers to induce players to play in the Illinois’ Classic without the hassle of getting out of town.

Turnberry is no cheap-O either, hotel rates run you $800 usad per night and one day tickets will cost you 50 pounds, but more now!

No, but I am putting together something for the future that i may share on a website…it has to do w confidentiality and contract. BTW, as u may know the Buckeye facitities are mindboggling, it sets the standard of excellence and everyone should see it. Alongside the river across the bridge to the shoe, it is an endless procession of complexes and awe, for each sport. Dying to see A2 in a few weeks.
But for now, Turnberry is so mythical.
Was speaking to a dear friend in bangkok, an expat, who told me his mom was from Ayr along the westrn scotish coast and asked me, rhetorically if I knew where that was located….i then proceeded to give him him a history lesson which produced a long-silence on our skypes connection….who said sports and venue is not educational?
🙂

excluding the Masters, Tiger wins 50% of the major tournaments he enters when he plays on that course for the first time….I gotta tell you, by all accounts, Ailsa is a beast. Holes #4 to #11 run along the rugged Scotish west coast. The roughs are brutal and the fairways and greens are surrounded and guarded by pothole bunkers. In most cases the bunkers are so deep you cant see them from the Tee. The most vicious element being non-manmade– the wind and rain.
Ailsa Craig is a doom-shaped volcanic island rising 1000 feet above the ocean 10 miles off the Turnberry shores and clearly visible from the links. Local folk say if you can see Ailsa Craig the rain is on its way, and if you cant–it’s already raining.

No doubt this tournament will match equally skill and wits–advantage Tiger Woods who loves the challenge of thinking around the course….two days, 8 hours and 50 minutes to TEE.
