Lewis Powell’s name has come up as a possible replacement for Utah’s D-Line coach who is now at Oregon State. He’s a capable position coach at D-line, is a good recruiter, and is a former Utah player. Anyone heard anything else to this effect?

I can tell you you from direct knowledge that as a practical matter, the part time Board of Regents has little impact on what happens at UH. They have no staff, and they do not have any information necessary to overrule policy decisions by the Administration, and they are largely ignored by the Administration. Even requests for information by the board go unanswered if the Administration does not feel it is necessary for the Board to know because the Board’s responsibility does not include any day to day functions of the University. The Board learns of things done by the administration only after the fact and often knows little more than what the public knows or can find out.

While technically, you are correct, we all know that in any heirarchy the Board of Regents or the Board of Directors in a corporate structure can easily directly or indirectly influence decisions down the chain of command. are you saying that they hire the President then its hands off from there?

The Board of Regents has the duties to oversees “all aspects of governance for the university system, including its internal structure and management. The board also appoints, evaluates, and if necessary removes the President of the University of Hawaii”. They do not select professors, teaching assistants, coaches or even an athletic director.

So Portnoy is correct that the Chancellor is responsible for the AD who answers to the Chancellor directly (and indirectly to the President). Chain of command thing.

That being said, it seems to me that an interim chancellor supposedly has the power of a chancellor until a permanent one is selected. That being said, I would imagine that he could always appoint an interim AD to serve until a new one is appointed.

So Portnoy on the Bobby Curran Show this morning says that Board of Regents of which he heads the Athletic Committe, is not involved in the issue of the AD, that it falls under the Chancellor who answers to the President. Is he trying to say they are not involved in us having to wait until BJ finds a new job until we start the search for a replacement. We need to get rid of the lame duck. Didn’t they hear that Shoji wants to know who he’s dealing with before he reups?! Anyway I call BS, on Portnoy for saying that the BOR are not involved. Come On Man! Oh and by the way are they also not involved in the inability of the Medical School to pay on it’s 9 million dollar loan. aren’t THEY, ultimately responsible for all of this?

Ok I feel better now. Time for moe-moe.
