2 prep players renew UH commitments

The H-2 pipeline has been repaved.

Mililani High quarterback McKenzie Milton and Leilehua defensive lineman Netane Muti reconfirmed their UH commitments during home visits with head coach Nick Rolovich last night.

Both seniors had pledged to UH earlier this year.

Muti said he began discussions with other schools after not hearing from UH for nearly a month. The Warriors had placed a self-imposed moratorium on recruiting after Norm Chow was fired as head coach on Nov. 1. The restrictions were lifted when Rolovich was hired last week.

Muti said he had a “great” home visit, during which he reaffirmed his commitment to UH. Feb. 3 is the first day high school seniors may put their commitments in writing.

Muti, who is 6-4 and 275, is projected to compete on the defensive line for the Warriors.

The Warriors have about 21 scholarships for the 2016 recruiting class.

  3. z December 4, 2015 9:26 am

Nice to see coach out there working. Hope to see more.

  4. cheepono December 4, 2015 9:27 am

    auuryte. hanapaa baby!

hopefully the ship hasn’t sailed with kalakaua.

  8. Hilo-Warrior December 4, 2015 9:31 am

    Good morning Tsaiko’s,

This is a good start. Getting some of the previous committed players to stay. Hopefully Rolo and few staff can get more local boys to stay home.

  9. PONO December 4, 2015 9:37 am

Rolo is hitting the local trails hard. I would be stoked if we got Muti, Timteo, Milton, Ulu Perry, Santiago and Anae. That would be a solid building block for the future. Wishful thinking but it could be possible.

  10. Bugaz December 4, 2015 9:44 am

Awesome job coach Rolo. Anxiously awaiting more good news from the recruiting front.

  11. Kifi December 4, 2015 9:53 am

    Wouldn’t mind getting Tovi.

  12. Stephen Tsai December 4, 2015 9:59 am

I believe he’s keeping his options open.
Whatever he does, I hope he chooses wisely.
    It’s a four-year decision.

  13. letsgowarriors December 4, 2015 10:00 am

is Rolo or Abe gonna hit the mainland this weekend?

  14. PONO December 4, 2015 10:02 am

ST did Timoteo meet with Rolo last night too?

  15. Maddog50 December 4, 2015 10:11 am

If Coach Rolovich and staff land some of the previously mainland bound players this year I can see it now……..The Pied Piper of the Pacific!!!!! Go Warriors!!!!

  16. BigWave96744 December 4, 2015 10:12 am

Rolo can’t contact a certain 4* QB but friends can contact friends. Boola or other must know Kyle Kafentzis.

  17. jeezy33 December 4, 2015 10:19 am

    14. The kid just left Wisconsin to attend Nevada. I don’t think he’s going to just leave again because Rolo is here. Especially since we are in the same conference. That’s like thinking Zwahlen is just going to dig out to BYU because Chow left.

  18. Legistlature December 4, 2015 10:20 am

Why did UH spend nearly $100K on new Dodge Chargers for campus security?

    Bring Jarin Morikawa back home.

He should have gone to Illinois State as originally planned.

Weber State, I think, was the other school.

  20. Mel December 4, 2015 10:23 am

Which players will probably not have their scholarships renewed? The talent level will need to be upgraded and sadly, some players will have to “move on” to the FCS, D-II level, or JUCO.

  22. Former UH Athlete December 4, 2015 10:38 am

In other FBS Coaching news… The other UH (Univ. of Houston), just renewed Tom Herman’s contract to 5 years at a reported $2.8+M per year (doubling his current $1.4M).

This will make him the highest paid coach in the “Group of 5” conferences by $600k or so according to USAToday’s 2015 coaches salary list. The ex-top paid Group of 5 coach was Tommy Tuberville (Cinci), another AAC school for $2.2M.

Herman’s new $2.8M will put him in the upper half of Power 5 conference pay. Random note, the lowest paid Power 5 coach is David Beaty (Kansas) at $800k. Beaty, in his first year as KU coach, led the perennial bottom dweller Jayhawks to their first winless (0-12) season since 1954.

  23. Da Punchbowl Kid December 4, 2015 10:42 am

Wow! Talk about about hitting the ground running and “Roling” hard. Love what we’re seeing with the new coach.

seewhy #18 – Love that checklist.

  24. BigWave96744 December 4, 2015 10:44 am

Austin enrolled in Wisconsin in the spring but left when Gary Anderson left. He enrolled at Nevada in the summer of 2015 as a true frosh.
Now the OC he chose to play for is at his Father, Uncle & Cousin’s alma mater.
If he transferred he would sit out 2016 and have 3 to play 3.

Not the same to compare to Zwalen transferring to BYU unless Chow went to BYU.

  25. seewhy December 4, 2015 10:45 am

Thanks DPK! Its an easy way for us to see Rolos hard work.

  26. kanak December 4, 2015 10:50 am

I would add Latu and Foster to guys Rolo gotta hanapaa. Both big kids with range…

  27. seewhy December 4, 2015 10:51 am

I think Bradlee Anae would be perfect for Hawaii. Rolo, Rolo, Rolo, keep them recruits Rolo, Rawhide!!!!!!

  30. Warrior Fan December 4, 2015 11:08 am

Still waiting to see who our OC & DC will be. Good job to Rolo on recruiting.

  31. Derek December 4, 2015 11:29 am

#17, Morikawa is not a Division I prospect. He was a walk-on at UNLV and never sniffed a game. He throws a nice ball, but he also throws a lot of picks. He’s not a runner either, thus gets sacked more often. Tim Chang gave him a scholarship offer to go to Jackson State, an FCS school. He should continue there. Sorry, it is what it is. Great family.

  32. kanak December 4, 2015 11:53 am

Ya I think that’s a realistic list for Rolo to shoot for. Now if he can pry one of the big names from their Power 5 commit, we really talking.

  33. kapakahi December 4, 2015 11:53 am

Hopefully Iosefa is on UH’s recruiting radar list too.

  34. Derek December 4, 2015 12:14 pm

I hope Rolo is a very good salesman. I think he will relate better with the recruits because he’s a younger coach, and is more engaging than Chow. Chow appeared to be a gruff man, an old man, and the young kids didn’t believe his message. Chow is the type to tell a recruit that he is going to do this, and he is going to do that. Comes across more arrogant, like chasing championships. Rolo’s style, in my opinion is to tell the recruits to help him grow the program and do it together, a more collaborative effort, and trying to have an exciting product. This is just my opinion.
We’ll see what the final verdict is on February 3rd, letter of intent day. I certainly want to see what the player evaluations end up when they start playing.

  35. kanak December 4, 2015 12:17 pm

He better be on their list, just hope UH is on his. Hopefully his recruiter gets lost in USC shuffle. BTW his counterpart at St Louis, Slade-Matautia for 2017 is even better.

  36. jeezy33 December 4, 2015 12:26 pm

With Bronco Mendenhall to Virginia, Wayne Taulapapa might be a realistic target now.

  37. Warbow December 4, 2015 12:36 pm

Wow, Bronco to Virginia, what a surprise. Let’s hope BYU doesn’t get Dino.

  38. Derek December 4, 2015 12:37 pm

I didn’t see it coming. Thought Mendenhall was a fixture at BYU. It’s all about the money anyway. Can’t deny a man to make a better life for his family.

  39. Derek December 4, 2015 12:39 pm

Babers is projected to go to Syracuse.

  40. kanak December 4, 2015 12:47 pm

Bronco’s gonna get $3 mil a year.. chi-ching! Lots of time to pay back tithing after that paycheck.

Still a tough sell to pry those BYU commits due to their greater calling.

  41. warrior650 December 4, 2015 12:48 pm

Seems some of the BYU fans want Niumatalolo. I think one of his sons plays there now.

  42. makai December 4, 2015 12:49 pm

  47. Boolakanaka December 4, 2015 1:20 pm

Hmmmn, picking up Austin would be a nice find. Not sure if he wants to transfer to his 3rd school in as many years. I do know that playing QB is a priority, and so while he certainly has the genes to play, say DB, (pops and two uncles were all All-WAC), he natural inclination is not to change positions.

  51. kapakahi December 4, 2015 2:02 pm

Maybe……but JMHO that Iosefa has the higher upside potential…….therefore the USC offer.

  52. kapakahi December 4, 2015 2:27 pm

Hopefully will also open the door for UH with Latu……since BYU was supposedly a frontrunner along with Oregon State & Utah State.

  53. kapakahi December 4, 2015 2:44 pm

Hopefully ’15 BYU signee Mika Tafua will also consider re-joining former Kamehameha-Kapalama teammate & UH DL Ka’au Gifford.

  54. C-Pop December 4, 2015 2:46 pm

BYU-current Offensive Coordinator & BYU great Robert Anae should be next BYU HC

  55. C-Pop December 4, 2015 2:51 pm

Kenny Niumatalolo O will not go over in Provo, Robert has paid his dues!!! It his time in Provo!!

  56. JustAsking December 4, 2015 2:54 pm

ST-when you say we have 21 available scholarships, is that remaining after countries by our verbals, or 21 total? If it is 21 total, why are we below the normal 25 per year? Thanks!

  57. C-Pop December 4, 2015 2:55 pm

Timoteo will thrive @ Wazzu if he goes there! Would like to see him stay home to help Warriors succeed!

  58. C-Pop December 4, 2015 2:59 pm

We’ll see if LDS BYU allows Poly Robert Anae to be the face of their program!! They should with all the “Outstanding” Poly athletes that have helped that program & continue to help them succeed!!!

  59. C-Pop December 4, 2015 3:04 pm

BYU – Robert Anae is man of integrity, compassion, and leadership, and is a devout Mormon!

  60. z December 4, 2015 3:06 pm

Way to go Wahine!!! Nice win.

  61. JustAsking December 4, 2015 3:21 pm

    after “counting” our verbals….

  62. graham December 4, 2015 3:21 pm

At first I didn’t want Rolo as the HC. But, he has won me over, I am excited about where the program is going. I think they have some pretty good players coming back. I give some credit to coach coach chow, in my opinion I think Kennedy is one of the bests Hawaii high school players that we have ever had. If we can figure out a QB and Oline I think we can get to the Hawaii bowl next year. Our Rbs and WR coming back are awesome. And I like our defense with the right coordinator

  63. kev-1 December 4, 2015 3:29 pm

#62 … did you just say that our WR’s are awesome? As much as I don’t like digging on the players (and I won’t single anyone out), the WR unit was by far the biggest disappointment this year. Maybe you also see the talent that I see in them too. Talent that the WR coach was not able to coach up. However, nowhere near awesome. That unit probably has the most to prove to the next HC.

  64. kev-1 December 4, 2015 3:30 pm

Shouldn’t say “next HC.” They have a lot to prove to the current HC.

  65. graham December 4, 2015 3:36 pm

#63- I think Kemp, Stub, and Collie will be great for this pistol/ run and shoot. I agree the dropped passes this year was horrific but there is some young talent

  66. Markazulu December 4, 2015 3:44 pm

I’m excited for next years offense because I have a feeling the shovel pass is gonna be back and with the burst of speed Harris/st juste has I think it could be a great weapon

  67. Mel December 4, 2015 3:49 pm

I wonder if there will be a number of current players who won’t have their scholarships renewed in order to make room for more talented recruits? Happens in every change in coaching regimes.

  68. z December 4, 2015 3:52 pm

Watching Bowling Green game. Kinda like watching UH. Receivers dropping balls. Off-sides, face mask penalty on defense. Quarterback number 11. Unreal. Oh yeah a lot of runs up the middle.

  69. graham December 4, 2015 3:55 pm

Is There any chance Chow is a candidate at BYU? Does the coach need to be a Mormon?

  70. z December 4, 2015 4:00 pm

Now quarterback throws an interception in the endzone. Ayeee!!

  71. Kahuna December 4, 2015 4:05 pm

Talking about receivers…..NO forget Jon Ursua. He is one guy that can make a simple pass into a big gainer. Guy got lots of YAC ability and could see him in the slot along with Collie and make for a pretty potent duo at slot.

  72. z December 4, 2015 4:09 pm

    I miss YAC.

  73. hitmanhart December 4, 2015 4:10 pm

aloha everyone !! norm chow can go home to BYU know !!

  74. Old School Dave December 4, 2015 4:27 pm

Admin folks at BYU will require that the new coach be Mormon. Problem is that even LDS coaches are fed up with BYU’s ridiculous Honor Code. Mendenhall realized that he’s taken BYU to the highest they can go and decided to take Virginia’s offer of $3 million (3Xs what he earns at Provo). BYU fans have visions of grandeur thinking that they can hire Utah’s Kyle Whittngham (BYU grad) or Seattle OC Darrell Bevel (LDS). They’ll probably hire someone like Ed Lamb (Southern Utah) or Kalani Sitake (OSU). BYU fans are not that enthusiastic about OC Robert Anae.

  75. Shoko December 4, 2015 5:23 pm

Would be pretty interesting if they hired Ken Niumatalolo and went triple option but I doubt that will happen.

  76. cappie the dog December 4, 2015 8:57 pm

The best thing about the Texas A&M/Hawaii game was the drive to Laie. I have always regretted not checking out the Cannon Activities Center when ex-Phoenix Suns guard Yuta Tabuse was playing for the Seasiders.

My cousin and I sat behind the Aggies bench because we didn’t want to be recognized by the people we see at the Stan Sheriff Center. We have no association with the team. We were afraid that they would think we were stalking one of the players. Sitting so close to the action, especially with such a minimal crowd, you hear every word that goes on the bench. I felt like I was watching a documentary film, like the one ESPN ran last year on the UConn women’s basketball team.

Mr. Cocobean: This team can’t shoot the ball.

  77. RRFLbaby December 4, 2015 9:14 pm

Someone said to bring Morikawa back to play? What a joke. He can play at the lower levels, but he isn’t D1 material. …Sorry. I’m on the fence onTimoteo. He has good size. But against a physical defense(like Kahuku’s ) he is easily neutralized. Also, from what I’ve seen, he doesn’t do crossing patterns, unlike the other receivers mililani had. Still, he looks to have a pretty good ceiling with the right coaching. I hope he stays home.

  78. cocobean December 4, 2015 10:39 pm

Everyone knew coming in 3 pt shooting and point guard play were areas of major concern. It’s hard to overcome these short comings when team chemistry is the lowest I’ve seen on a Beeman coached team. Leadership is lacking. Ashley can get pretty hyper and play faster than need be. King is the most vocal but her strong point is getting on teammates to fire them up but not to settle them down.

Did they play man or zone? Against WSU and ASU were played mostly man and got burned by drives to the basket. Against USC were started in man but went to a zone which helped to keep the margin down.

  79. thekiddd December 5, 2015 12:07 am

Offer the WR from Kamehameha, Kumoku Noa and maybe his older brother will transfer back to make it 4 brothers to play for UH.

  80. Maddog50 December 5, 2015 6:36 am

Dino Babers expected to be named Syracuse Head Coach today-

  81. Maddog50 December 5, 2015 6:41 am

Only 5 remaining HC positions including BYU, Rutgers, South Carolina, East Carolina and ULM. That closed fast-

  82. Shoko December 5, 2015 6:55 am

Football scoops: Joe Schad is reporting that Dino Babers will accept the head job at Syracuse.

“There’s a lot of people who think in order to be a good head coach you’ve got to be a head coach at a smaller school and Babers seemed to have taken that path. A coordinator who started his head coaching career at the FCS level then worked his way up learning what it takes to be a successful head coach. In two years as head coach at Eastern Illinois Babers won 19 games. In 2014 at BGSU, Babers won 8. This season they won 10 capped by last night’s MAC championship win over NIU. Baber’s is clearly a low-risk, high-reward to turn Syracuse’s football program”

Interesting to note is that Herman Frasier is the Deputy Athletic Director at Syracuse under former Boise State athletic director Mark Coyle.

  83. Old School Dave December 5, 2015 7:11 am

Great for Dino Babers. His DC Kim McCloud, also a former UH player will likely accompany him to Syracuse. Interesting that his O-Line coach Tom Freeman is an old-timer who goes back to the Larry Price & Dick Tomey regimes at UH.

  84. warriorsanddolphins December 5, 2015 7:13 am

From what i’m hearing about Timoteo, is that grades might be a problem. Also, it doesnt help that to get into UH you have to have passed Algebra 2, which is NOT a requirement by the NCAA. I hope Rolovich addresses this problem, its already hard to get recruits to come here and make it more hard for them to qualify. lol

  85. cappiethedog December 5, 2015 7:23 am

    They played zone throughout.

What troubled me was the silence on the court. Nobody was talking. Nobody took the initiative of gathering up the players for an on-court group huddle when the game was on the cusp of getting out of hand.

And it’s not only that they’re missing shots, the missed shots aren’t even close to going in. There were air balls that sailed over the net by 12-18 inches.

I have no right to suggest what the coach should do. I respect her so much. She is easily the best coach we’ve had since Vince Goo. But on these upcoming three road games, I think she should just leave Olivia Crawford in the game, and let her learn, warts and all, because it is imperative that she develops as a functional point guard before the Big West season starts. I think King is out of position. I think King would be happier at the small forward spot, grinding out rebounds and shooting from point blank range.

I know I’m being alarmist. Everything should be fine once Hawaii starts playing teams of their caliber.

Being so close to the action at Cannon, it was a real eye-opener as to what SEC-caliber players look like. They make everything look so effortless. Once I realized where the game was headed, I just relaxed and enjoyed being a fly on the wall, observing the Aggies coach do his job.

  86. Ipu Man December 5, 2015 7:55 am

It has been over fifty years since I took Algebra.
Haven’t had to use it since.
    Just saying.

  87. mctruck December 5, 2015 8:03 am

I bet UH AD is encouraged with the recheck by Rolo on the two-so-far verbal recruits. Imagine if he had decided to wait any longer to hire Rolo?
That being said, I wonder if he got a chance to meet with Timoteo?

  88. Andrew December 5, 2015 8:10 am

I’m sorry but I don’t care how good of an athlete they are, if they can’t pass algebra 2, they should not get into a university.
