cindy — i think the difference is that hartong and danielson were the type of player who could handle the pressure of having to pass and immediately hit.
olevao, for all her improvement, is not at that level unfortunately. at least, not able to do that on a consistent basis.

danielson especially was able to fulfill that role. she wasn’t the type of player to ever hide on serve-receive. danielson was probably one of the best passers to step into a wahine uniform.

hartong’s passing sometimes broke down and/or was targeted, but she was such a great attacker, that she could often hit her way out of a tough situation.

150. good observation. think i had mentioned that as well last night. It’s what teams did when targeting Hartong, Danielson, etc. . you try to take that hitter out of the option to hit when making them pass and then have to set up for the attack. These players are somewhat penalized for being good passers and are asked to do a lot.

#142 I second that. Am so glad that Dave is still guiding the ship. The ship is being maneuvered in a disciplined approach but the speed boat club wants instant changes and gratification. It makes for entertaining reading.

The middles all have the slide in their skill set. Magill doesn’t think she’s effective at it. Maglio tried it once at the end of Set 1 Friday and set went pretty far behind Higgins on the stepout and didn’t connect, which is why it showed 0 hitting errors in that set. Mitchem will remind many of Bown when she uses it.

islandman — i think you gotta look at more than just the stats. olevao started to struggle passing, and was being targeted during critical moments late in the sets, as wsu attempted to make runs at hawaii. in set 3 in particular, she was a front row hitter, and was struggling to put up a decent pass and then was being set and couldn’t terminate. so she was taken out of the serve receive pattern at that point.

last night was a grind, and it was great to see players step up. great matches by taylor and magill. nice to see kahakai raise her game. greeley seemed to be playing with some extra emotion last night.

give wichita st credit — they run a funk offense. few teams at this level will funnel their offense through the middle. and lehman was fantastic for them. they’re missing just one or two outside hitters who can match her output. but wsu is going to be great for hawaii’s RPI.

olevao might be struggling under the weight of expectation. let’s not forget, no matter how much fans expect of the players, the players expect way more of themselves. but olevao’s inconsistency may be her undoing this year. there’s too many quality recruits/players on the bench waiting in the wings if a start doesn’t step up. and playing “just consistent enough” may not cut it, especially if others can offer more.

it’s always tough to sit an underclassman for a freshman, but if it’s for the good of the team, you gotta do it. here’s hoping it’s handled with humility for all involved.

I think Tai received 19 serves, had 2 RE’s. I’m not an expert, but that’s not bad ? Greeley received 19 with 0 errors. Granato received 11 with 1 error, Kahakai 23 with 0 errors.

two teams that hawaii will see in the next couple of weeks … florida playing at american right now. match is tied 1 apiece. at intermission right now.
