An interesting comment from former UH player Jason Olive, who was at the second UCLA match. He thought that the key to UH being a really good team was the progress that needed to be made by Averill and Olsen.

I don’t think it was Timmer’s fault he wasn’t set more than once, obviously a function of his not practicing much at middle. .He has now played 1 set against Stanford, 3-plus sets at UCLA. at MB . Timmer listed at 6-6, Holt 6-9.
Since there wasn’t much tape on Timmer at MB, they still had to honor him. Didn’t see the match so don’t know how the commit block went.
the point is they needed him in to serve, plays back row well and hits the 3-meter best on the team. Reminds me a little of the situation with Schkud, undersized at MB but all-around great player.
That Timmer looked confused, guessing he worked on being an OH for these matches and likely unsure of where he was supposed to be when at MB

One, is the fact that in 3 sets he attempted only one shot. A smart team will then, ignore the middle and gang up blockers on the outside. Why UCLA didn’t recognize this and adjust is amazing. Two is that Timmer is relatively undersized, and has not practiced at middle at all. He often was confused and had no idea where to go on certain plays. A team with a good middle blocker would immediately take advantage of his lack of size and knowledge. UCI has excellent middles, we shall see if this strategy works as well against them, tonight and tomorrow.

They went with Cheape and Phelps tonight. Phelps can also play OH so it was good to bring him on the road. West played briefly Friday. not sure if his abdominal strain fully healed.
as for Timmer at MB.That was his position before coming to UH. He’s pretty versatile, can play OH and Opp. He played middle in the fifth set of the win over Stanford. it keeps a strong server in (he has been serving for Holt on some rotations). and he’s considered the team’s best 3-meter attacker. They’ve been trying to find a why to get him more court time.

Thought he was a pure a Opposite. So it’s Phelps and Cheape at libero?

He’s got to be given a chance out there; he’s that good.

I’d Q why it is that West isn’t playing this year?!..Wade’s resting Holt’s injured hand…Johann I knew could do it!

Sedore is the BIG ‘?’ for this year’s team. IF he does well, they do well. If he should fade down the MPSF stretch, the Warriors will flop.

&Wow on the Warriors doing okay in Pauley since rally scoring (2000’s). UH, and everybody else in the VB world, could NEVER get a win on the UCLA campus.

2001, March 29th, Costas’ 3-2 win over the Bruins was splendid.

2005, February 26th, Pedro’s win over the Bruins..lovely!

2011, February 19th, Jonas’ 3-0 win over the Bruins…superb!!

2013, February 16th, JP’s 3-0 win over the Bruins; what a tiger!!!

Congrats.

West has had an abdominal strain. I believe he is cleared to play.
someone mentioned Page’s defense. The 7-footer led the team with 8 digs.
