Shoji should schedule a weedend’s (worth of) ‘scrimmages’ with Sunahara. Reed could throw together some makeshift all-star team and fly them over from Orange County toward the, near, end of the season.

Top 25 teams will be:
Texas, San Diego, UCLA, LBSU (2x)..but that’s it unfortunately.

San Diego / LBSU will be bottom dwellers moreover.

I was gonna complain about the scheduling of Portland St. but then I saw they got two local girls on the team and understand the reasoning for scheduling them now.

The departure of Pacific gives UH 2 more dates to schedule out of conference opponents. Together with the third date, which was filled by BYUH last season Hawaii has three dates to fill for out of conference matches. Shoji is probably making calls right now to fill these dates with quality opponents I’m sure.

The other issue — for seeding purposes — is how many of these teams will be top 25 RPI. Hawaii was on the bubble last year for a seed, and likely lost out b/c they simply didn’t play enough RPI top 25 teams to compare to the other teams on the bubble for a seed.

Texas for sure will be top 25. UCLA likely. Maybe San Diego. So that’s 3. No other teams will likely be rated that high in the RPI. In the Big West, Long Beach St may be up there, if they rebound from last year.

If Hawaii is on the bubble again for a seed, then the lack of top 25 RPI teams on the schedule would hold them back … again.

Not sure yet about this schedule for the RPI. Cindy is right, it’s hard to say how well those teams will do. Arizona plays in a tough conference, but their win/loss record last year hovered around .500, which is not all that helpful. The same with Northwestern last year.

Last year’s problem was a lack of teams from different regions. Almost all of Hawaii’s out-of-conference opponents came from the west coast and/or played in conferences in the west. So for this year, Texas certainly helps, Hawaii gets the benefit of the Big 12 factoring into their RPI now. The Big 12 teams always seem to do well, RPI-wise. But beside them, there are only Northwestern and UTEP from outside the west on the schedule. A team from the mid-west might have helped here, like a Wichita St or a Notre Dame or a Louisville (which are all teams that have traveled here in the past).

I think New Mexico St and even Portland St will help more than we think. NMSU’s win/loss record is almost always a favorable one. And Portland St, although they play in the Big Sky, had a good one last year also. Hopefully they can duplicate it.

The other question for the RPI will be — are there other out-of-conference opponents on the schedule, either for right before the Big West season starts and/or for later in the season, like Hawaii typically schedules. Although, i’m not sure the Big West schedule will necessarily allow for it.

So we’ll see …

They are not actively looking for a third middle because they have Hartong and Taylor still in the lineup. Should Adolpho not return, it is not because of either the basketball or volleyball coach. Kalei loves both sports and is a fierce competitor and a superior athlete. I’m more interested in Hannah Rooks’s future with the wahine sand program. If there is a way to get her on the indoor court, Shoji and company should do it. She is a 6′ 2″ trained setter with A2 experience. She is going to play sand for UH but if she wanted to play indoor, I say make a scholie for her because she is a very good player.

RE: #3. That poster goes by many names here and on VT (Obvious by there uniquely–random and confusing written posts) They have mentioned names here and there. Cannot take them seriously. I remember them mentioning Madison Kingdon as a transfer before… uhhh she’s still at AZ.
