Kiraly is not an option
Sealy might be but as mentioned he’s in the middle of a five-year contract so he probably wouldn’t leave now. BUT since this isn’t a retirement announcement, perhaps the timing would be right in a few years.
Don’t understand the problem people have with Punahou. Wong was an excellent assistant for Shoji, did a great job as the beach coach, and went back to his alma mater for a HC job.
Fisher does not make double what Shoji does.
If the beach job was full time, Hall would rather do that. but it is not full time and the way the associate coach’s job description works, that job doubles up as head beach coach.
Wade told me he is not planning to put his name in. Feels they have a really good shot, especially with the move to the Big West, of getting to the national tournament.
One name that got tossed out today is Wichita State coach Chris Lamb. Would not be surprised if he is considered for Illinois.

I truly believe that there is no one already selected, not from the conversations I’ve had with people who would know.

Retirement benefits (disability or regular) including survivor’s benefit, medical insurance, etc. Once that is figured and the choices made the announcement will be made.

Thus Shoji is getting his thing in order because it is important for himself as well as his spouse. Thus in turn by taking this avenue of the hiring of a new coach all can be in place when that time comes. I am sure the candidates will be told of the plan and what will done if they become the finals for the position.

Looking at the process Shoji is taking care all that needs to be done for the program, his family and himself. Respect by the current AD and the department will mean a great deal to all future UH coaches hired and those coaching at UH currently and that catalyst is Mr. Dave Shoji.

I’ve read he is a fully-vested state employee, so medical insurance in retirement won’t be an issue for him.

Would guess any medical insurance in retirement would factor in his cancer. Thinking UH is taking care of Coach Shoji in this manner. Just a thought.

For all we know they may already have someone in mind, but this being a state job they have to go through the motions of doing a nationwide search.

Went through salary estimates previously, at the above thread. Cook makes $600K base, more than triple Shoji’s salary. You can do a google search to find the source articles.

Fisher and Sealy are both viable candidates, and yes, money isn’t everything. If so, Shoji would have left a while ago to a big time program that could pay him north of $200K (particularly in CA). But I assume family, love of Hawaii, etc. are big reasons why he stayed. Sealy is the long-shot, but if I’m UH, I go after him with an aggressiveness you see in football hiring. Put your best foot forward and show him the love. If he says no, at least you tried your best. Fisher is a very good choice also. After that, no one remarkable with Hawaii ties comes to mind.

And Shoji’s sons are not in the consideration set, not even close.

He’s with the women through the 2020 Olympics. If Stanford couldn’t pull him, Hawaii won’t.

A conundrum: prostate cancer chemotherapy vs quality of life.

– Over 80% of male autopsies revealed various stages of prostate cancer.
– Age has been identified as the primary risk factor.
– Chemotherapy drugs attack the symptom, not the cause.

RE: HC Applicants

– Hawaii would do well with a high energy, knowledgeable young coach with international experience in recruiting. Someone Hawaii can afford, someone who will trek the globe for exceptional talent.

If a national championship is the goal it makes no sense to hire someone lacking championship credentials; especially older more experienced (high salary) coaches. Most coaches compete for the same national talent, with the big name schools usually coming out ahead.
