Too many things to comment on except for
Someone said Koelsch should have played earlier, She played in all 4 sets, running a modified 6-2. they looked at various blocking matchups and adjusted. Dialed back the serving rotation one to get what they thought were the best matchups.
They got what they wanted in Set 4 with Koelsch next to Maglio, and Maglio next to Greeley.
Koelsch still not as adept as Higgins on the D ball to Taylor.
The passing was not very good and Koelsch was able to save a couple when setting the middle. Also thought that the up ref missed a couple of calls when Higgins tried to set the ball and UCR impeded the set.

As for the travel, also taken into consideration is missing class time. A number of players are taking labs and those are usually on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
With Daylight Savings Time starting, there will be 2 hour difference now to California. Is that really too much to adjust to?

I have seen both teams a few times this year. I love the way they run the 6-2.

One setter plays all the way around and the other is replaced in the front row for a hitter.

For USC – Pizza gets replaced in the front by Abercrombie and Johnson plays all the way around (sets in the back, hits in the front)

For UW – Beal gets replaced in the front by Jones and Tanner plays all the way around (sets in the back, hits in the front)

I could see Kendra playing all the way around and Higgins replaced in the front row with Nikki. I know we would lose Nikki’s D set, but I think her body could use a break from digging all the balls she digs.

Anyway….UW looked real, real good against USC. They were clicking on all cylinders. I was pretty impressed in their improvements over the year so far. They could contend for the NC if they keep getting better and Sybeldon could beat out Bricio for POY.

Hoping Hawaii can get it going again after having a bye week. I still feel this team can beat anyone when they are on. Let’s hope they start to peak in the next few weeks. OMG….it’s senior night coming up…. 🙁

Has lots of upside, big fast arm swing, and nice hops.

IMO a mix of both gives them the best chance against a USC or Washington. Kendra needs to be up at the net obviously.

UH recruiting is a little slow compared to most top schools but it’s always been that way, luckily still a lot of good players left in the 2017 class.

I wonder who is coming up?

With Dave possibly retiring after 2016, my opinion and observation because I think he promised Taylor and Higgins he would stick around for them. I’m not saying he did, I’m just saying I THINK he did. I remember after their freshman season when he was contemplating it, he mentioned he brought those 2 in to talk to about it. I think during that conversation he told them he would stick around for their careers at UH, which is next year, 2016.

Anyway, I’m wondering if that is why we don’t have more commits for 2017. We lose 3 of our best after next year. Big shoes to fill with these 3…and Ponce.

Teams flying TO Hawaii will always have an advantage as is it always easier to travel west than it is to travel east. Look at the records of pro-sports (NFL, NBA, MLB) West Coast teams that travel to play on East Coast compared to eastern teams that travel west. Traveling east is much harder on the body.

Check out this excerpt from a Washington Post story from 12/31/12 titled “Jet lag is tougher when traveling east, but precautions can ease its effects”:

“Traveling West is Easier
Your body clock has an innate tendency to run slightly longer than 24 hours, Jain says. Each morning, your body compensates for this slight discrepancy by contracting your internal clock to synchronize with the 24-hour sun cycle. When you travel west, you gain several hours, so your day is extended and your body gets the extra time it naturally wants. But when you travel east, your day is shortened; that makes it harder to adjust, Jain says, because your body has to cut its natural cycle even further.”
