In the FIVB World League, it was USA over Serbia in 4 – 25-21, 20-25, 27-25, 25-20. That was a good win and qualifies them in the final 6 to be held in Florence, Italy July 16 – 20. It was the same starting rotation as usual with Shoji as Libero. Anderson 17 kills 2 aces, Taylor 11 kills 2blo 2 aces, Lee 10 kills 3 blo, Holt 11 kills 2 blo, Rooney 4 kills 2 blo 2 aces and setter Christenson with 2 kills 1 blo 1 ace. With the US women coming to play at the SSC this coming Friday and Sat, I am just hoping to see the US men playing here as well in the future. GO USA!!!

I noticed in today’s USA roster in SA, no Reed Sunahara (as one of the 2 asst. coaches).

He is listed among several on the US coaching staff on the website.

The U.S. Women’s National Volleyball Team, ranked second in the world, dug in and defended its home turf in defeating top-ranked Brazil 25-22, 25-27, 25-19, 25-19 on Saturday evening at the Bren Event Center on the campus of UC Irvine.

Five U.S. players reached double-figure scoring led by Jordan Larson Burbach (Hooper, Neb.) with 16 points via 12 kills, two aces and two blocks. Kelly Murphy (Wilmington, Ill.) and Kim Hill (Portland, Ore.) charted 15 points each, while Foluke Akinradewo (Plantation, Fla.) chipped in 14 points including a team-high three blocks. Lauren Gibbemeyer added 10 points.

“It feels really good,” said Hill. “That’s the first time since I’ve been on the national team that we’ve beat them.”

Brazil’s Fe Garay tallied a team-high 16 points, while Sheilla totaled 11 points.

The U.S. converted 36 percent of its attacks into points as Alisha Glass (Leland, Mich.) set the squad. The South Americans were limited to a 32 kill percent as the U.S. compiled 53 digs led by Kayla Banwarth’s (Dubuque, Iowa) 15 digs. Hill added 14 digs in the victory.

“We played really well together,” Hill said. “We’ve been working on a few things as a team, especially with positive communication.”

Brazil out-blocked the Americans 11-6, but the U.S. served created problems all night for the two-time Olympic Games champions. The U.S. had a 10-1 ace advantage, while its reception was 73 percent positive the Brazilians’ 57 percent.

The four-match USA Volleyball Cup continues on Sunday at University of Southern California’s Galen Center at 5 p.m. PT. The contest will be streamed at http://www.usavolleyballcup.com. The series shifts to Honolulu with match at the University of Hawaii’s Stan Sheriff Center on July 11 and July 12 at 7 p.m. HT.

It’s tough mentally to play the same team four times, but we will just have to refocus and come out and play tomorrow and whatever happens tomorrow,” Hill said. “We’ll have to refocus again.

Please notify us when the replay will take place. The live broadcast was terrible and I stopped watching it after the first set. Glad to hear it was due to technical problems and not my computer reception.
