But in her case every other school recruited her as a libero and she wanted to set. Hawaii recruited her as a setter.

If this Elena doesn’t grow to 6′, other schools may not recruit her to play outside.

Self-correction: Higgins graduated from Punahou, not Iolani, but because both are the top 2 academic high schools in Hawaii, my argument still holds.

I have provided examples of UH getting mainland girls vs. other monied schools, UH getting Hawaii players over other monied schools, including a graduate from Iolani, and all the examples are top 30 prep volleyball aces. Plus, all the schools UH beat out have better academic reputations than UH. Stanford is a school that WVB players are hard-pressed to turn down because of academics, but not USC. Per USNews, Stanford is ranked the #5 national university, USC is 23, and UCLA is tied for 24. If you consider USC a top notch school, then why not UCLA? All the schools I mentioned are ranked higher than UH, by at least 50 spots.

As far as the argument that UH recruited more UCLA players than UCLA recruited UH players, that is largely a reflection of the talent level in CA versus HI, and the geographic advantage UCLA has over UH for CA recruits who prefer to play closer to home. UCLA doesn’t have to recruit lower rated players or projects as much as UH, so that also partially explains your assertion. But despite all this, UH still got all those top 30 players I mentioned. And they weren’t “steals” from other schools–it was UH putting together a top notch effort to land these recruits.

The biggest hole in your argument is not acknowledging the geographical advantage UH has. Olgilvie is a local girl, and UH usually gets the top local girls it wants when a scholie is available, even from Iolani (Higgins, e.g., a top 25 recruit). As I mentioned, UH has to battle for her, but they have key advantages that should give folks some confidence. And UH hasn’t used the “you can play for Dave Shoji” pitch for a couple of years now. They have focused on coming to UH because you love UH–Shoji stated this in an interview a while ago. Also, it is Elena’s decision, not her family’s decision. Some current players’ parents (#16 ranked Mitchem, e.g.) preferred their daughters play elsewhere, but they still came to UH.

And you need to stop changing your argument to suit the facts. Originally, it was USC’s academic reputation, and then it was Mick Haley’s legendary status. Originally, it was Stanford, USC and UCLA as top academic schools, but now UCLA is not a top notch academic school you can’t turn down. The idea UH is a para-olympian competing against the Dream Team for recruits is like Chicken Little frantically chirping about the sky falling. Have some confidence.

I specifically listed USC and Stanford cause these schools are just top notch academic schools you just can’t turn down. UCLA , yeah we can occasionally beat them for a player or two but they win most of the recruiting wars against us.

Shoji probably went after every single player on UCLA’s roster but I don’t think Sealy went after more than two or three of UH’s players.

Of course there is always a chance. All I’m saying is the Oglive family will be hard pressed to say “NO” if someone like legendary coach Mick Haley or a powerhouse academic school like Stanford offered her. Keep in mind…..Shoji will probably be retired by the time Elena enters college so UH is going to have to sell the program to her. Will not be able to use the “you can play for Dave Shoji” sell pitch anymore.

UH beat Nebraska for Taylor. UH beat Washington for Danielson. UH beat Nebraska and UCLA for Mitchem. Higgins was planning to go away but decided to play for UH. UH battles, and wins many times against the monied programs for recruits. Let’s have some confidence about UH’s chances with Olgilvie.

I am almost certain that she will get recruited by UCLA and maybe even Stanford or USC. If she get offers from any of these school, it will be tough to turn down due to the academic reputation of these schools.

Hope UH lands her, and hope she grows a few inches.

I noticed some of theyounger players like Cowell, Larson, Van Eekeren, Reese do not seem to be Camp Erbman with the rest of the team? Are they all redshirting and why they didn’t go?

Excited for the upcoming season with all the new additions although will still miss Siki and Kolby (but change is good!). Anticipating a great season after reading about all the talent on this team. Let’s go Bows – hope to win a national championship in our final year in the MPSF! 🙂
