new thread up.
Maverick you have great insight. but when I have promised people not to say anything I don’t. so when I said i’ve been told differently, that’s what I’ve been told by people who know.
sorry that you won’t take my word on things.
25. She spells it Deitre.

as for Shoji being 28 when he was hired … very different era and a part time job. it was Chris McLachlin’s job that he then gave up because Punahou said he couldn’t do both (coach UH and Punahou).

interesting hire at Illinois

But the football and Basketball team don’t have the status of Wahine volleyball. We need a top tier coach now.

If his hiring pattern continues, Matlin will hire close to the vest and heart with someone who will stay as long as possible because they consider it to be their dream place to be. Love and loyalty to Hawaii will play a huge role of consideration in my opinion.

To add, Shoji was 28 when he was hired. It was a different era back then. Now WVB is a big deal and a lot more folks are playing and coaching. You don’t see a lot of sub-30 coaches getting top jobs anymore. One exception is Keegan Cook, who took over Washington when he was 29. Hambly was about 36 when Illinois hired him.

All three could stick around 20 plus years.

UH needs someone who will be around for many, many years. Program stability.

Everyone writes about why it would be hard to attract certain persons, but isn’t this job one of the most desirable in VB? Doesn’t the chance come to someone only once in a career? What would you do if, in your field, people approached you about a dream job that will be offered to you only once in your career? Sorry, I got a good recruiting class coming in. Sorry, I have 2 years left on my contract. If the UH job is a truly desirable one, no one, in my opinion, who is asked to have a serious conversation with Matlin will allow short term considerations to overrule career-long considerations.

I’m not in favor of breaking the bank, but this is one UH job in which money within reason should not be an object. UH and Shoji invested 40 years in this, so there is a 40 year investment and national reputation to protect. If we can’t get the best guy because UH would not pay him, then it better be because the guy asked for the moon and not because UH tried to get off cheaply.
