new thread up for Monday

123. some of that is true but seems the only one who was effective at digging consistently Taylor was UCLA. Her money shots are line and sharp angle. The tempo of the sets by Higgins and Koelsch are very different, especially the D sets.
Agree the block is stacked on her and that teams are doubling up on Magill as well.

The beach was really serving tough, thus making for harder passing, and not as accurate setting, but kudos to Kendra for setting a great victory. A win is a win. Next year should be interesting when Iosia gets here. Will Coach redshirt her if she shows that she is a better fit? or will she play? Hmm! inquiring minds want to know. I still think that despite losing Olivia and TMO, next year will be the wahines year. GO BOWS!

We are in conference play. Opposing teams are going over film with a fine tooth comb to learn the tendencies of Wahine hitters, especially its stars like Taylor and Olivia Magill. Obviously, you stack your blocks against them. I don’t remember Taylor ever hitting against a single block during the match and the back row players were placed where Taylor likes to hit, forcing Taylor to try riskier shots down the line or at sharp angles. It doesn’t help when the set is off too. Sometimes a coach will take a chance and assign one blocker to a top player, like Arizona did to Lianna Sybeldon of Washington. Of course you know what happened. Sybeldon had a career night, hitting at a .731 percent clip with 19 kills.

Gimmillaro has always been like this. someone said he was justified complaining on some calls but I didn’t see any that should have been overturned in favor of the beach. He did question why Maglio didn’t get called for the carry when Murray (I think) had been a few plays earlier. Thought Martinez, the up ref from the mainland, did a very good job about that. IMHO, several of the other Beach players should have been called for the carry but he let those go, as he did with Maglio. however the one called on Murray was more like palming a basketball and thrown down.

sorry but a number of times Koelsch’s sets were off and it had nothing to do with the pass. and they aren’t going to put Maglio into the serve-receive.

He was on the referees all night over very minor matters. However, he can coach a team and recognized that serve returns were Hawaii’s weakness. He must have called the serve to target Olevao 90% of the time over the course of the match. I was there and could see him give the server Tai’s location. Taylor’s problems with percentages were a large part due to bad location on the sets, but Kendra was trying to set from getting errant passes on the service returns. I guess that Dave feels that Tai is better returner than anyone on the bench, but I would like to see DS for Tai in backrow and letting Maglio serve. Watch her in practice and she can do the job as a server.

Nikki looks like she is playing with some pain. When she is getting up from digging a ball, I just want to run over and tell her to stay down. I hope she can last the season.

Large percentage of our passes were not good and I’ve not seen so many bump sets.
Really think that defined set location problems and the lack of middle hitting.
Thank god for the blocking.
