Mark, Taylor’s story runs Sunday. Mitchem’s will run next week. I will call you about that.

IF committee does Top 4 seeds based on this week’s RPI, the top regional sites (baring upsets) will be Nebraska, Texas, Minnesota and Wisconsin. Not Washington
There will be 16 subregional sites with the top four remaining seeds from each region hosting the regionals.
as mentioned previously top 16 coming into this week
Wisconsin, Texas, Nebraska, Minnesota, Florida, Kansas, Missouri, BYU, Stanford, North Carolina, Washington, UCLA, San Diego, Michigan State, Western Kentucky, Kentucky.
we’ll see how much the new ‘advisory’ to the committee takes place.

Conference affiliation: Hawaii left the WAC, placed it’s women’s and most men’s teams in the Big West. Football to the Mountain West. some to the MPSF.
Hawaii has long wanted to be in the Pac-10/12. there were serious discussions when Stan Sheriff was alive. If the Pac-12 expands again to 16, they likely pick from the Mountain West.

The WAC was rapidly disintegrating. Too bad since Commissioner Benson almost had some of the old WAC members on the verge of coming back, think it was UTEP that spilled the beans and the Moutnain West made a big move to solidify its membership.

Burns … I mentioned earlier in the week that Burns was fine. knee taped. told Taylor they were ‘twins’ now with the bandages. although Taylor wears a brace most days and Burns still refuses to wear knee pads.

Players have not said anything about Shoji retiring. Incoming recruits, which included this class, all understood that he might be at UH for their entire careers.

Sounds like they have some solid players in Martin, Tucker, Ozee, Rooks and Homayun (plus shucht who didnt play today) once you add the indoor players like Maglio, smith, taylor, and transfer Kan UH will have a rock solid 5 pairs IMO.

They lost to Wisconsin in 4 without Nikki and Annie, lost to Washington in 5 without Annie, and beating Arizona, who has beaten every Pac-12 team except Washington and Colorado, without Nikki and Annie. The team has shown recently that their level of play is vastly improved and have settled into a consistent lineup with is key for moving into the playoffs. The team has displayed great blocking, serving and passing. They have the hitters so let’s get the party started. No matter who we play, we can win.

That’s why the Big Ten added Rutgers (N.Y. metro area) and Maryland (D.C.), and the Pac-12 added Utah (Salt Lake City) and Colorado (Denver). Honolulu is the nation’s 72nd-larget television market, behind Green Bay-Appleton and Des Moines-Ames. So that, and the fact that adding Hawaii would inflate travel costs and provide no logical scheduling partner, is why the Pac-12 would probably not expand to Hawaii.

primarily though, i would say football is the biggest driver, and to a lesser extent, basketball … that’s because those are the sports that dictate revenue on many levels … through attendance, and most importantly, television contracts with the big cable sports networks, like espn, fox and cbs. some conferences have even launched their own channels, like the pac-12, big-10 and sec.

hawaii got out of the WAC a few years ago, essentially because it was crumbling. a few members fled the conference. hawaii followed suit, because there was a question whether the WAC would be left with enough members for automatic NCAA qualification. at the time, other larger conferences had started to re-align, and it caused a domino effect, causing schools in other conference to move. it just so happened the Mountain West was open to taking the football team, and the Big West was open to taking all of hawaii’s sports teams. and that’s the present alignment … i may have missed some details, so i’m sure others can chime in…

it just goes to show that hawaii being seeded in the post season is still not out of the question. hawaii fans can still have hope! haha… of course, the stars still need to align a little… the right non-conference schedule, players healthy, and the big west teams have to do just enough to not drag hawaii’s schedule down. for the most part, 2 of those 3 factors were present this year. unfortunately, we faced some health issues at the start.

it’s nice to see what could have been in terms of the RPI and hawaii’s chances at a seed. but i’m glad to see this team healthier. a deep postseason run is still in the cards, and that’s all that matters now…

Thanks for researching and sharing. Wahines are going to have to do it the old fashion way – earn it one at at time.

I asked John McGinn, who created his own RPI estimator, to run a scenario assuming UH was 25-2 with losses to Wisconsin and UCLA. The result is that UH’s adjusted RPI rank, which includes good win bonuses over UW and KSU, would be 10.

His model can be found here (the tab that includes experimental bonuses equates to what the NCAA reports each week–UH is currently estimated to be 28th):
