You expect to win, and the expectation is “Never Playing Not to Lose”. The only ranking any team should care about is the one after the national championship game.

Nikki Taylor plays a vital role to the team’s success. With her in the line-up, blockers have to honor and stay with her opening up the OH a little. WITHOUT Nikki, the team is reduced from great to good. Long Beach was able to exploit some weaknesses when they played here in Hawaii PLUS they were playing one of their best matches of the year (probably due to the one week preparation time given for their lone match of the week). Keep in mind that Hawaii has NOT been at full strength for nearly a month now but have been able to find ways to win. Hoping the team heals quickly (especially Annie) because we’re going to need each and everyone of them if we want to go far in the playoffs. Go Wahine!

The middle shines but without the serving from TH and NT prospects are dim on the road. (Shoji’s setter change does little when outside hitters cannot beat the block.) Given the circumstances a system change may help.

While I believe that we have a top 16 team, I believe that we could easily lose one or two of our remaining matches on the mainland because of parity, because LB and CP are good teams, and because of the schedule. The lose of Annie was huge but if Greeley is not at top form we are toast in Imo. Nikki is a great player but she will need help from Tai and both setters. The middles and Savannah are solid. We shall see.

They have not played or beaten anyone in the top 25 since their win over Florida. That was a long time ago. Meanwhile, teams in the BIG 10 (8 teams in AP top 25) and PAC 12 (7 teams in AP top 25), comprise 15 of the top 25 ranked teams, face ranked teams, week after week by virtue of the strength of their own conferences. So it’s really difficult to tell just how good the Wahine are. We got a small peek when they played the Beach which took the Wahine to five at the SSC. So let’s see what the Wahine do on the road at places like the Beach. Should they lose any of their matches, expect them to drop, not just one spot, but several.

1. USC
2. TEX
3. PSU
4. MINN wins big on the road and WASH losses to Stanford at Maples. The Gophers ride the zip line to #4.
5. WASH. The Huskies fall to #5 after losing to Stanford on the road.
6. Ohio State. The Buckeyes win big at Ann Arbor and remain at #6 despite a loss at East Lansing.
7. UCLA. Bruins leapfrogs Hawaii (the 4th team to do so) and lands at #7 with two road wins including #25 Oregon. They beat Hawaii in their house did they not?
8. Hawaii. Wahine is idle and remains @ #8. Rodney Dangerfield. You bet! At this ranking level, Coaches get jealous and ornery.
#9. Stanford is rewarded for its upset over WASH and skips back into the top Ten.
*Nebraska free falls and mercifully halts @ #10.
RECAP:

1. USC
2. Texas
3. Penn State
4. MINN
5. WASH
6. Ohio State
7. UCLA
8. HAW
9. Stanford
10. Nebraska

IMO even being ranked #7 would also be a little bit of a stretch.

Even before all the injuries, I didn’t think they were a Top 7 team. #10 is probably the most appropriate. Even their current #8 is OK. But, it could just come down to the case of all the other top ranked teams losing and the coaches not knowing where to place Hawaii.

Nelson is really good setter. Unless we serve them tough and get them out of system, we are in for a real battle. Great win for Brian G. Beach had over 16 blocks but Mustangs kept firing away. Beach showed a lot of pride in the end to win at home. Great 2nd contact dump by Hudson to win it for Long Beach. We have a two match cushion!!
