2. yes Shoji agreed to be the lone wolf for 1 year and got stuck for a second.

We’ll see what happens with UCSD.
as mentioned before, both Bakersfield and Sac State were interested in joining but backed off a bit when told that they would not get the Hawaii travel subsidy. Which applies to any school joining after Hawaii did.

The Pac-12 is very easy to follow in this department:

1. Washington & Washington State
2. Oregon & Oregon State
3. Cal Berkley & Stanford
4. UCLA & USC
5. Arizona & Arizona State
6. Utah & Colorado

For instance, week 1 the Oregon Teams would travel to the Bay Area:
Oregon @ Stanford
Oregon State & Cal Berkley
Oregon @ Cal Berkley
Oregon State @ Stanford

Then, a few weeks later it will reverse and the Bay Area teams will both travel to Oregon to play the Oregon teams. If you at the Pac-12 schedule in WVB, WBB, or MBB you will see this pattern.

Since the Big West only has 9 teams, Hawaii doesn’t have a travel partner for WVB which results in a few schedule anomalies:

1. We can play home conference matches on back-to-back nights since the other team doesn’t need time to travel to/from the second match.
2. For all of our conference games we are our opponents ONLY match that week since they don’t have to play our travel partner also.

Shoji volunteered to be the “Lone Wolf” due to the benefits of Friday-Saturday home matches (better ticket sales) instead of Thursday-Saturday or Friday-Sunday. Some fans don’t like that other teams can focus on us 100% instead of having to prepare for 2 teams. If UCSD joined the Big West, it would be a good travel partner for UH, especially since there are multiple daily non-stop flights from HNL-SAN.

-Aloha!
