Not sure if the strategy of driving the opponent back off the net is always beneficial. If the opposition is under, in some cases well under 6′, Mags sometimes has an advantage if the opposition is forced to receive, pass, and set right at the net where she can tower over them and intimidate. If they are backed off the net, they then have vision of all the court in front of them for all of the play, and a chance to get a good run and elevation in their attack with less concern about the blocker. Driving them back off the net with the serve may serve to negate Mags advantages blocking at the net. If Mags then falls back to defend, they have a chance to attack her in transition. I noted that UCLA in the deciding flight and third set against Stetson, was choosing to send a short floater serve down the middle and in front of Stetson. The serve split Stetson’s defenders. UCLA got two aces that way and really messed with the Hatter’s serve receive and ability to generate an attack close to the net. The wind would catch the short floater and it curved and jittered as it dove to the deck about 8 to 12 feet in front of net and in front of the diving defenders trying to dig it up. It looked like a good strategy in a crazy wind.

Interestingly, UH wanted to flop its 1-2 pairs but another team (not FSU) filed a protest saying that since Spieler and Maglio had played more at No. 1 than Taylor Schucht that the pairings had to stay the same. NCAA officials upheld the protest even though the rules supposedly allowed it.

He talks about coming up a bit short vs. FSU, and ‘giving away’ a couple few too many points, three errors in the last four points. Granted he didn’t say they were ‘unforced’ errors. Maybe some folks want to go down that tautological path, I wouldn’t. The wind is always a factor to be factored in. It’s high risk to serve a long floater when the wind is whipping. Maybe it’s the right move, but if you fail to keep it in, it wasn’t the other team that forced the error.

20. believe you mean the third. think the wind helped with the ‘unforced errors’ and a couple of friendly rolls on the tape by FSU.
Talked to Hall about Maglio’s two serving errors at the end. He said she did exactly what she was told, serve deep and have FSU play back. At 10-10, serve caught the wind and went long. Next time (forget the score) they had switched sides. Served into the wind and it got pushed wide.

Spieler-Maglio came oh so close against FSU, but just a few too many unforced errors. FSU managed to grab some momentum and keep it, while Hawaii grew a bit frustrated, mostly with themselves I think. However it was the number one flight of the number one seed they were up against, so no reason for anyone to get too down. With experience, you learn to tip your hat and move on. You can’t undo what’s been done but you can learn from it. Key for Hawaii now is to get a good rest tonight and focus on each point tomorrow, cutting down the unforced errors. Slow things down if you lose momentum, but pedal to the metal when it’s with you, and fight to keep it on your side.
