This was a friendly. it doesn’t count towards Olympic qualifying. Both teams seeing what their young players can do.

I would not say that USA used its first unit Friday.
The U.S. lineup Friday had never been used in international competition.

both young teams. both used different players each night. China figured out Lowe after watching film. the surprise was how poorly USA played in Set 3.

I don’t think anything “smells.” I can only offer guesses which may be wrong. Perhaps Chinese players suffered from jet lag so Lang Ping decided to save her best for the second match. The jet-lagged team made a lot of uncharacteristic errors. But, she did warn before the matches even started that her team would snatch a victory and they did and thus salvaged their wounded pride. So now the teams are even at one victory apiece.

As for the USA side, Karch Kiraly wanted to give his bench players a chance to start and see what they could do. They haven’t passed as cleanly as the regular starters and of course, once China studied Karsta Lowe’s hitting patterns, they figured her out, both digging and blocking her more often.

Also, the local fans kept clamoring, “We want Tama,” and they finally got what they wished for. She displayed great effort and made some stupendous digs. I’m sure the local fans were happy to see her play.

The team will learn from this and in the future will save their B-team to play weaker teams than China to give the starters a rest. Hope the team will do better come Grand Prix time and especially in the World Cup later this year, the first Olympic qualifier. Until then, they have their work cut out for them. Good luck!

I’m sure there are others from the west side who shy away for the same reason. Sounds like the US team needs a lot of work.
