Mentioned the proclamation the night of the Wahine banquet.
The Wahine have been recognized by previous administrations normally at their banquets. But this year was the first time I remember a governor showing up in a long time to do it personally. Usually they send someone from the office and it’s read during the banquet.

They have not been held to a higher standard. They have gotten the recognition annually. But a bigger deal this year since Ige came, as well as Caldwell. and both stayed for the entire banquet, very much a variety.

not to say of course that the state’s “proclamation” honoring the men’s (and women’s) bball teams has anything to do with money. and i don’t see it as a slight to the wahine vball team. rather, it’s likely more to do with the “historic” nature of those appearances by the bball teams.

WVB making the NCAAs every year but only receiving official State of Hawaii recognition when they advance to the elite 8? Clearly, expectations are much higher where women’s volleyball is concerned.

The Wahine volleyball team received State recognition from the Governor at its annual dinner in January at the Ala Moana Hotel, Hibiscus Ballroom. Reportedly a well done affair. The State of Hawaii holds Wahine volleyball to a higher standard than any other sport. How else to explain the governor’s State Capital honorarium to the men’s and women’s basketball teams for making the NCAAs.

Wahine volleyball goes to the NCAAs every year (and even made it to the elite 8 last year;) but, unfortunately, no recognition from the governor nor the school.

No matter, if the governor expects an NCAA championship then so be it.

NCAA Beach Championship (from http://www.ncaa.com/championships/beach-volleyball/nc/road-to-the-championship):
“Selection Process
The National Collegiate Beach Volleyball Committee will conduct selections for the inaugural NCAA Beach Volleyball Championship on May 1. The eight team field will be selected from the 56 NCAA institutions sponsoring the sport of beach volleyball. Of the 56 teams, three teams will be selected from the east region and three teams will be selected from the west region. The remaining two teams will be selected at-large from the teams across the country.”

To be clear, the NCAA Beach Volleyball Championship does not have auto-qualifiers from conference championships this year. Next year though, they may. It’s not clear to me though what criteria they will use to pick the field of eight, other than that three must come from the east region, and three from the west region. End result is that Hawaii is competing for one of five available spots on their road to the NCAA championship this year, and I haven’t found yet where it is clearly stated what the remaining criteria and weightings are to determine selection. Anyone have a better handle on this? Would appreciate being enlightened.

UCLA’s top beach pair are freshman, identical twins Nicole and Megan McNamara, from Vancouver, BC. The pair recently won the Volleyball Canada U21 Beach Trials.

Coach Hall might want to give Arizona State a jingle and make sure they know the schedule for play this Friday and Saturday. ASU’s current schedule has the day for pairs and duals backwards, and all wrong start times. That, or ASU is in the know, and UH and UCLA have it all wrong. Someone is looking setup to be the April Fool.
