.Van Winden and Spieler have been killing it on the beach in the offseason. Torrey will be at UCLA in spring.

UH’s middle attack is a work in progress with two converted opposites. Jennings is still getting comfortable with them. It’s effective enough that it’s keeping the opposing block honest.

The blocking last night was excellent, it clearly impacted UCLA’s hitters. Although their wasn’t much scoring from the middles, they were very effective. UCLA had to respect the middle attack and the bic and the pins frequently had a split block to work against. They didn’t have to hit over it, although Stijn frequently did, they could tool it just as effectively. When Fey embraces tooling the block and beach rolls as his game, he’ll have more success. Every Warrior on the court last night contributed and had star moments, and some of the best play was going on between the ears, and showing leadership. Stijn calming Fey down after a disputed call and getting his attention back on the game. Mol taking on the middle role like he owned it and played there his whole career. Siki directing play on the court and calling out who to set. Franciskovic digging a tough ball and sending a perfect cross court to Worsley, who then makes a perfect cross court set to the opposite pin. Brett coming in under pressure late in sets and not trying to do too much at the service line, making effective in serves and going on set closing runs. Ian leading in blocks, and doing a good job of digging, passing, and being in the right spot at the right time. Kolby adjusting to the UCLA serve and hitters and frustrating their best efforts with unbelievable digs and passing. The coaches calming and inspiring their players. Great game, I look forward to another battle with the Bruins tonight.

I think the key was that Coach corrected the way the back row was passing those wicked UCLA serves. Kolby also adjusted his positioning on his digs.

I continue to be amazed at how UH continues to win despite the huge drop off in the middle game from last year. Siki is playing his best games this year and Stijn is a special Opp.
