13. you’re probably right about Tsuji. The years just blend in these days.

15. Had discussed this a while back. With two young children, an ailing dad and a husband often deployed, she would not be able to commit to what the associate job requires.

As for what Hall has to do, he says he’s up to double duty, did it at UCSD when coaching both the men’s and women’s teams (think he was coaching club at the time as well). I know, UCSD is not Hawaii, high profile both indoor and sand.
And it’s not just ‘probably’ on the breaking down films and scouting. He will be doing exactly what Wade, Sealy, Wong and all the first assistants have done for Shoji. Recruit, break down film and scout.

The associate HC is required to do so much, I don’t think Robyn has the time to do a good job. If her husband is serving overseas and she is raising her kids by herself, there is no way she can go out on long recruiting trips and spend time coaching beach.

Robyn is best being a 2nd assistant at the time being and just focusing on the setter. Hall will become the hardest working man in the athletic department with his dual coaching responsibilities along with recruiting for both sports and will probably be responsible for scouting and breaking down films for the indoor team too.

Don’t think Robyn would be a better hire. The job was for both indoor & sand teams. Sand is a whole different animal than indoor, strategies & movement wise. Plus, don’t remember Robyn ever playing sand except for fun.

Wade told me the same thing last week about Hall having more experience than any other assistant Shoji has hired. sometimes I forget what I write for print, online and what i put up on the blog.

yes, the hiring process is tortuous at UH. He could do what Shoji did when hiring Ah Mow-Santos during Anderson’s maternity leave. Called a temporary emergency hire.

8. was saying that the RPI was more of a consideration than the comment that teams were ‘too chicken’ to come out because they didn’t want a loss.

7. obviously not in affect with Hawaii since they’ve had Nebraska and now Texas out. They don’t have another DI team within driving distance.

Irvine was easily the best serving team I have seen at the Stanley in years. And the weapons they have at the pins should take them back to the Finals.

-sounds like wade was very supportive of hall’s applying and move to be the associate coach on the women’s side and the head sand coach. there’s so few coaching opportunities on the men’s side, wade said, that when an opportunity like this opens up, you just have to take it, even when the “timing” is a little off (like it being in the middle of the men’s season). but wade said he had a feeling that hall would be making the move.

-wade mentioned that hall is probably the most “experienced” associate coach that shoji has ever hired. he thinks that hall will definitely help with recruiting (mentioned hall just helped put together a great recruiting class for the warriors), and that hall will be able to step right in and do all the things expected of an associate coach. wade said he’ll really miss hall’s scouting reports.

-wade talked about moving his staff around to fill the opening (he didn’t name specific names), but he wouldn’t officially hire someone new until after the season in may or june. going through the hiring process is a lot of work, and he didn’t want to go through that in the middle of the season.

-wade talked about the loss to uci over the weekend. up until that point, uci had been playing some inconsistent vball with some new starters. but uci put it all together, especially serving and passing. wade said uci’s coach was almost “apologetic” to him after the match, saying that this group hasn’t served and passed like that in practice or in games ever. if uci can produce like that on a consistent basis, then they will contend for the national championship.

-he liked that his team hit for a high percentage. they were hitting over .400 in the first two games of the loss to uci. when they have trouble generating kills out of system, he’d like to get his players on the bench in there (like mol and leung, who both had a great fall). he mentioned that leung’s shoulder is dinged up a little. sedore didn’t have a service error in the last two matches of the tournament, which he thought was remarkable for someone who puts a lot of velocity on his serves.

-he talked about the upcoming matches with ucsb. they will be good. they have a great setter (jonah seif) who is 6’8″ but very fluid. he thinks seif could be on the national team, challenging christenson and shoji.
