Huff can place the ball but clearly does not have the “gun” that Passi and Granato possess (let alone Mitchem or Castillo). All 3 recruits have terminator potential with Mitchem and Castillo also being experienced blockers. It may come down to Castillo’s recovery progress from ACL surgery. Nikki needs to stay at opposite, if only for her future prospects, she frequently tallies multiple blocks and a good hitting percentage. Outside of setter, opposite commands the highest salary in pro leagues and for good reason.

Maybe she had in her mind but coaches didn’t know until this week that it was going to happen.

16 Would not be surprised if one of the two freshmen redshirt but that decision is for the player and coach to agree to. Mitchem doesn’t have a redshirt year. as for Huff, with such limited playing time hard for anyone to make an assessment that she is or isn’t a shutdown blocker as you put it. Doesn’t have to be the best at ball handing but that is a plus. Mitchem is a six-rotation player who, Pestolesi said, kept a very good libero off the court. Of course that is at the JC level but still. Think it’s way too early to figure out who is going to play where.
that said don’t think they’d put a freshmen in at L1. you still have Manu-Olevao. They could put Taylor over there. You could put Greeley over there. It will be a battle for playing time.

She being a senior I know Shoji wanted to give her every chance to succeed; but, her decision was probably made sometime ago. Passi’s decision on the other hand probably surprised everyone. With Huff now being the only reserve left, odds are one of the 3 recruits will get significant playing time at L1. (My guess is Granato.) While another recruit will transition to opposite to backup Nikki. Not knocking Huff but Hawaii needs a shutdown blocker who is also a terminator at opposite. Either Mitchem or Castillo would fit the bill; but, ultimately, ball handling will decide who gets the part.

I don’t know what the coaches and players agree to. only was told that Long was not going to be on scholarship if she stayed for her fifth year. Scholarships are renewed year to year.
Part of the reason I don’t like to get involved in the discussion of who is on scholarship It’s between the player and coach.
Yes the UW-Stanford match was a record crowd for a Pac-12 venue, 8,646 fans at Alaska Airlines Arena,

I believe Cindy said that it was agreed upon by both parties when Ginger Long redshirted her first. She still was under four years of scholarship. Believe the same thing happened with Kari Gregory (2003-2007), who redshirted in 2003, was on scholarship for four years, but stayed on as a walk-on her fifth year.
