people complained and doubted about long until she showed this match that shes a decent defender, almost as much digs as mendoza and kahakai. despite end of match she hit 0% she still had 7 kills and where it counts. you see that high velocity swing of hers? and this time she was more tactical, what she lacked in offense compare to tai she made up for in defense and she shielded na wahine from kill shots digging it up and passing it spectacularly and she scrambled.

also yall miss tai eh? you all before were dissing tai too. and i know some of you still do, hating on both tai and ginger, including about the formers faith.

a note on serving, notice how nikki taylors serve was so effective? she kind of changed her jump float to more of a standing float similar to adolphos the other day but with a little hop on it. and since people complained about service errors, notice how ucsb servers were all the way back? essentially they can hit as hard as they want and as long as they hit it straight, it would go over the net and hardly go out long. wahine float servers should try that at a standing float all the way back instead of jump floating (ie greeley, long, to name a few). speaking of serving i wonder couldnt they use passi as a serving specialist to threaten some opponents with her jump/spin serve like vs davis?

the reasons why wahine won the match (because they were in some real threat of danger):

they won the opening set (which was a sort of luck, had they lost that set, it could of been like last year 5 set and who knows, they have yet to win at 5, let alone come from behind to win at 5)

sarah mendoza was at least 40% faster (i had predicted she only needed to be 20% faster vs ucsb, knowing that she isnt going to be any quicker and she luckily now has kahakai and even long to back her up if need be). good thing because that gaucho libero is hardly slow.

higgins provided armor. though her setting was of lesser quality but she provided 7 blocks (on paper thats more than anybody else). despite her perceived lackluster setting to the middles, magill and adolpho still got plenty kills and blocks. greeley also contributed.

of course, the TIGER of na wahine RISES. broken elbow? what broken elbow? (though i still implore her to use her other arm as necessary) nikki taylor her power was terrifying including at the service line with 3 aces/no service errors. her gun easily tore through the gauchos defense. it was taylor made!

With respect to 100, I think we’re mixing up a micha hancock type with a carlini. hancock is my idea of an ‘offensive’ setter. carlini is a setter in-system or out that can serve up a hittable ball from anywhere on the court. thats her ‘first’ option. plus, she can really block which helps if you are (6-1). she has complete control of her team. Additionally, if anyone watched that match, Nebraska did not play that poorly last week. This is the team that beat Penn State earlier in the season. I would not say they are over-rated, but in on this day, over-matched and the difference was in large part, the setting.

that was a very brutal road trip, they were gone from Nov. 17-Dec. 10. Reno for the WAC tourney, Utah State and Utah, two at CSU before heading up to Green Bay.
Watanabe was injured in practice in Ft. Collins.

You can tell that she really wanted to prove herself and to a certain extent, she did. You can tell that she has been working hard waiting for another opportunity to contribute – and she did. Good job Ginger!

I can still remember when UH lost to them in 2004 regional in 5. Ashley Watanable was out due to broken hand/wrist due to collision with Victoria Prince.

Without it, she hit LIGHTS OUT!! Without the heavy brace restricting her mobility, it allows e Nikki to hit a variety of shots that UCSB WAS NOT prepared for.

Re: 97. I was talking of the entire season, not only this match. For example, Greeley has 13 aces and 32 service errors. Higgins has 30 aces and 46 service errors. This contrasts with Tai Manu-Olevao who has 31 aces and 39 service errors. This is an unfair comparison since these two are ALL-TIME bests at the college level but Micha Hancock of Penn State has 82 aces and but 65 service errors. Samantha Bricio of USC has 63 aces and 61 service errors. Admittedly, Hawaii is one of the best serving teams in the nation and Manu-Olevao has been, at least once, third behind Hancock and Bricio in national stats this season. But there are still, too many groans from the crowd when these two serve. I think, a bit too much risk and not enough reward. However, this is a MINOR complaint. After all, I said many times that, for Hawaii, serving and blocking HAS been the strength of Hawaii this season. Last night floor defense became another strength.

They haven’t played every year since then. The losing streak was 17.

As for Higgins learning something from someone else’s setter … find that a bit insulting. Higgins is learning from one of the best in Ah Mow-Santos.
Carlini is a different setter, very offensive minded, which is not how UH plays.
think what is more impressive is their libero had 29 digs in a 3-set match.
Definitely Nebraska played very poorly but then we’ve been saying they were over-rated.
