That is really funny how the announcer really, really, really sounded dead as he was announcing Hawaii’s lineup. When the Hawaii crowd would cheer, he would quickly speak over the cheering. I just think it was funny how incredibly dead he sounds…lol

  3. Cindy Luis November 15, 2015 11:07 am

stats not working. will let the SID know.

  4. haleiwacrossfitter November 15, 2015 11:10 am

He is even doing it when announcing the points. It is sooo freaking funny!

  5. Cindy Luis November 15, 2015 11:16 am

    4. not anything new for an EM. Flat for visitors, hyped up for home team.

stats working. UH up 13-9. TO Davis.

  6. Cindy Luis November 15, 2015 11:21 am

Davis has pulled to within 17-16 when blocking Taylor. TO UH Taylor with 3 errors, the only errors by the Wahine.

  7. haleiwacrossfitter November 15, 2015 11:21 am

I know that is how it normally is, but I mentioned it because this guy is EXTREME. It sounds like he is crying when he has to say “point wahine” Like actually crying. It’s really funny.

And it sounds like the UC Davis crowd adopted the Washington serve chant against the visiting team servers. bounce, bounce, bounce, spin..ooooooooo

  8. mei mei November 15, 2015 11:25 am

2/7 so agree! i had to mute my sound… couldn’t stand his monotone any longer…

  9. Cindy Luis November 15, 2015 11:26 am

    UH up 20-18. TO UCD.

  10. T103 November 15, 2015 11:32 am

I usually don’t watch/listen to streaming games on the mainland, this would be my first one, it’s actually really funny. I understand home court advantage and all that with announcers AND i’m really amused b/c it sounds like it really pains the guy to say “point wahine”.

  11. haleiwacrossfitter November 15, 2015 11:34 am

    Ugh…

  12. Cindy Luis November 15, 2015 11:35 am

Davis ends it on 3-0 run. win 25-23

  13. isles November 15, 2015 11:35 am

    10. lol at the pain of ‘point wahine’

wahine need to valor up some and finish it this time, they dont want to lose to davis.

  14. Ron November 15, 2015 11:36 am

We look really lethargic. Passing is atrocious.

  15. Cindy Luis November 15, 2015 11:40 am

Sounds like 1420-AM is on the air with WVB

  16. Cindy Luis November 15, 2015 11:41 am

    UH up 8-4. TO UCD

  17. mei mei November 15, 2015 11:43 am

wow! now he sounds like he is in SERIOUS pain… and just mumbling! what a clown!

  18. haleiwacrossfitter November 15, 2015 11:45 am

I’m listening to the video because it sounds so funny. I’m literally laughing every time. I think he might kill himself soon

  19. T103 November 15, 2015 11:48 am

@haleiwacrossfitter ME TOO! it’s sooooo funny. He sounds really depressed.

  20. Cindy Luis November 15, 2015 11:48 am

    UH up 15-7. TO UCD

  21. Maverick November 15, 2015 11:49 am

Watching the streaming video and Clare-Marie had some awesome digs just before the timeout.

  22. haleiwacrossfitter November 15, 2015 11:50 am

Can we get a welfare check at the announcers table, please? HAHAHAHA

  23. Cindy Luis November 15, 2015 11:53 am

UCD has cut it to 17-12. TO UH

  24. Maverick November 15, 2015 11:54 am

Going back to the Stanford-Washington match earlier this week, each looked very beatable. Today, so does UH.

  25. haleiwacrossfitter November 15, 2015 11:58 am

We need an OH that will slam the ball down the opponent’s throat.

  26. Bleachercoach November 15, 2015 11:59 am

Clare-Marie Anderson is doing a sensational job digging back there. Coach need to get Koelsch in a little more IMO. Everytime she goes in she comes after the other team scores (she doesnt cause that problem always) but other players are making constant mistakes and they stay in….that’s not going to do it in postseason

  27. Cindy Luis November 15, 2015 12:01 pm

Maglio ends it at 25-17. UH has not dropped a Set 2 all season.

  28. haleiwacrossfitter November 15, 2015 12:02 pm

Yeah, Hawaii needs to use these last 4 matches to start revving up and start peaking. I hope they still have some peaking to go. They can do it, they just need to start getting really aggressive. Really go after every point.

  29. Maverick November 15, 2015 12:03 pm

I realize Davis has only lost twice at home this year, once in conference, but UH as a top 10 team should be playing better than what they are showing. Taylor hitting .115, which is really poor for her. She hit .421 against them in Honolulu. Hope she picks it up in the next two sets.

  30. Bleachercoach November 15, 2015 12:07 pm

    28. Yes I agree with being a bit more agressive. Sometimes they look out of sorts. Again, there is someone always stepping up when someone else is struggling. Our “Balance” the team possess has and could help us down the road.

  31. haleiwacrossfitter November 15, 2015 12:12 pm

    29. I agree Mav. They should be dominating this Davis team, especially since it is the first game of the road trip and they are fresh. Nikki really needs to step up her game if Hawaii is going to go far in the tournament. Get that “pop” back in her hits

  32. haleiwacrossfitter November 15, 2015 12:13 pm

    ummm….5-0 start. yikes

  33. Cindy Luis November 15, 2015 12:13 pm

Davis out to a 4-0 lead. TO UH

  34. Bleachercoach November 15, 2015 12:14 pm

    No excuse. Why?

  35. menehune November 15, 2015 12:15 pm

Wahine playing like they’re the underdogs. Need to loosen up.

  36. warriorfan November 15, 2015 12:15 pm

Unfortunately Nikki hasn’t been hitting well for weeks now. Too bad we have no one else to rest her and make sure she’s 100 percent and ready for the tourney.

  37. haleiwacrossfitter November 15, 2015 12:21 pm

man…they need to get it going.

  38. Cindy Luis November 15, 2015 12:24 pm

Magill with the overpass. UH ties it at 12. TO UCD

  39. mei mei November 15, 2015 12:24 pm

    YES! finally a killer hit!

  40. haleiwacrossfitter November 15, 2015 12:26 pm

    good comeback….lets keep it going!

  41. Cindy Luis November 15, 2015 12:26 pm

Quick TO by Aggies. UH up 14-12

  42. warriorfan November 15, 2015 12:29 pm

Too many hitting errors, connection with Olivia isn’t there today.

  43. haleiwacrossfitter November 15, 2015 12:30 pm

Our blocking looks weak this match

  44. Maverick November 15, 2015 12:31 pm

Nikki Taylor clearly hitting with more pop this set.

  45. Cindy Luis November 15, 2015 12:37 pm

Hawaii wins it 25-22 after being down 0-5

  46. Maverick November 15, 2015 12:38 pm

My impression of the anti-Davis announcer:

    POINT!!! SET!!! WAAAAAAHEEEEEENEHHHHH!!!!

  47. T103 November 15, 2015 12:40 pm

My rendition of the announcer :

Point, wahine…. *sob* *cry* *tear* *frown* =( waaaaaahhhhh

  48. Cindy Luis November 15, 2015 12:44 pm

Ace by Davis. UH calls TO down 2-5.

  49. warriorfan November 15, 2015 12:48 pm

TMO should not be passing. WHy doesn’t dave put in Granato or clare?? Makes no sense

  50. Robin November 15, 2015 12:48 pm

Sub someone out in the back!

  51. Cindy Luis November 15, 2015 12:49 pm

    Manu-Olevao with a double-double. now 11 kills and 13 digs. UH closes to 7-9

  52. Bleachercoach November 15, 2015 12:49 pm

This is getting old…why is coach allowing these mistakes to persist

  53. Cindy Luis November 15, 2015 12:51 pm

Magill with a solo, ties it at 11. Magill with a kill ties it with 12. Magill nine kills.

  54. haleiwacrossfitter November 15, 2015 12:51 pm

Clare is really becoming a force for us back there…love her!

  55. Cindy Luis November 15, 2015 12:53 pm

Higgins with an ace, UH with its first lead at 12-11. TO Aggies

  56. isles November 15, 2015 12:54 pm

shoji needs to pull some when someone struggles, not just tai but nikki and kalei as well.

  57. Cindy Luis November 15, 2015 12:58 pm

    UH up 18-14. TO Aggies.

  58. haleiwacrossfitter November 15, 2015 12:59 pm

    56. There are not a lot of options on the bench to replace all of them. They sometimes need to work themselves out of it. But, I do agree that being aced as much as Tai has been this match, she needs to be replaced in the back row, like he is doing now.

  59. T103 November 15, 2015 12:59 pm

Did anyone else loose audio of the streaming live game? Maybe the announcer read our comments and told the tech guy to cut the sound lol?!

  60. Maverick November 15, 2015 1:00 pm

    56. It’s a delicate balance. Sometimes, you want the player to work him/herself out of a funk and gain long-term confidence. Pull players too often too quickly, and they lose confidence. Similarly, leaving them in too long hurts the team. Clearly more art than science here.

  61. frings November 15, 2015 1:00 pm

Where’s the audio? Did the announcer finally die?

  62. haleiwacrossfitter November 15, 2015 1:03 pm

yeah…I think announcer finally kicked the bucket because Hawaii is winning this match. He probably had to leave the building.

  63. warriorfan November 15, 2015 1:03 pm

    Nikki came through.
IMO TMO should only play front row, Granato should have been playing backrow all season.

  64. Cindy Luis November 15, 2015 1:04 pm

    UH wins 25-17

  65. haleiwacrossfitter November 15, 2015 1:05 pm

    Clare is a STUD!!!

  66. Maverick November 15, 2015 1:06 pm

Before the audio tuned out, I could hear someone whisper a swear or two. Too funny.

  67. T103 November 15, 2015 1:07 pm

@frings @haleiwacrossfitter See it wasn’t just me lol. I think he got sent to the hospital or something lol

  68. 'ohanaInBellingham November 15, 2015 1:13 pm

Thank you, Clare, for securing the win!

  69. mo-jo November 15, 2015 1:17 pm

Well… good win but this isn’t doing battle with the top 16. shots were going over Higgins that KK would have blocked.. i’m disappointed in the how the setters are being played.

  70. jmy November 15, 2015 1:20 pm

Classic case of UH playing down to an opponent…but a win is a win…and many of the top teams have suffered huge upsets this season: PSU, UCLA, Florida, Ohio State & Stanford, to name a few…

  71. tongo November 15, 2015 1:22 pm

Yeah, Claire is a stud. Happy Nikki came alive as the match progress. She seem stiff in the beginning resulting in uncharacteristic errors but in the end she started to put her entire body behind the hits with more typical success. Yes, everyone knew we would win but the body language of the team looked very flat. Can we bring in Kathy Gregory to give them a pep talk about “killer instincts”? They will need it when they play the Anteaters.

  72. menehune November 15, 2015 1:23 pm

Not an auspicious debut for the Wahine final road trip but an ugly win is better than a pretty loss. Claire Marie is a stud in the back row. Hope Dave gives her more PT as she’s proven herself with her steady defensive plays and serving. Congrats to the coaches and team for clinching the conference title.

  73. Bleachercoach November 15, 2015 1:28 pm

    69…agree with you….as well as the backrow…
Still think Greeley is most consistent and steady out there. She is not perfect but she shores up the backrow IMO and she is doing that not 100% healthy either..I really like Anderson back there…she gets to the ball fast….I just don’t know why Castillo don’t get a shot at OH….Her height 6’3″ offers more presence and able to hit over or off the hands…Not enough court time to see if she could do the job….Would like to see her get an opportunity and not just 1 or 2 plays. Our own starters aren’t consistent and hitting high pct. anyways. What is there really to lose? Nobody is really consistent! I know it’s a mute point, but really…

  74. Cindy Luis November 15, 2015 1:28 pm

    69. you do not know the Koelsch would have blocked those shots.
No style points for this one but it’s 18 in a row and they have clinched at least a share of the Big West title. cane win it outright with any win this week.
No question Manu-Olevao had a poor game in serve-receive, aced 7 times.
But came through with 11 kills and 14 digs.
Taylor overcame a slow start to finish with 21 kills.
The wildcard is Greeley. She had 5 kills, 2 late, that started pulling the block over to her side, allowing Taylor a better look.

  75. haleiwacrossfitter November 15, 2015 1:30 pm

We got 3 very hard matches left. Hawaii needs to play a lot better to win these next 3 matches.

Irvine almost beat us last year at their place as well as this year at Hawaii. They will be tough at home. This match scares me.

Cal Poly didn’t give us much problems earlier this year, but they are near the top of the conference for a reason.

UCSB…who knows. If they all of a sudden get healthy, they could be trouble.

    69. I think our block suffered a bit this match because KK was not in the front as often as she usually is. She makes a difference up at the net.

  76. Cindy Luis November 15, 2015 1:37 pm

    72. Castillo in a tough spot. She’s the second opposite and the third middle. She isn’t going to replace Taylor. Granato is the designated sub for Manu-Olevao.
agree the coaches did a good job adjusting. They weren’t sure what UC Davis was going to run, either a 5-1 or 6-2. and Davis used both. Players had a lot to keep track of when it came to whether the setter moving to the front to set was a front-row or back-row player.

  77. mo-jo November 15, 2015 1:37 pm

Cindy, This was a good wing but it’s just… IMHO and the logical difference between being a generous 5-8 and
being 6-1. i’m not an expert but have watched a lot of PaC 12 and BTN games.
If we ever get a chance to go that far I think we’d better shore up our block on that
    side.

  78. mo-jo November 15, 2015 1:37 pm

sorry for the typo… thats win not wing :o)

  79. Cindy Luis November 15, 2015 1:41 pm

    77. was just saying that there is no guarantee Koelsch would have blocked those shots. no argument about the height difference. IMHO when the passing is poor and tight, Koelsch is better at handling that.

  80. Cindy Luis November 15, 2015 1:43 pm

Wahine driving back to Sacramento and flying down to LAX this evening, driving to Irvine tonight.

  81. noblesol November 15, 2015 1:44 pm

Wahine have a definite tendency to come out flat or anxious or unfocused on the road. They need to change that this road trip. They need to screw their game face on at the start of the match, not after falling behind.

In other news, the WBB got a win over NAU, 61-52.

Hawaii Leis traveled to NAU for their senior night for WVB. Their WVB team is clinched the Big Sky Conf. this year. http://nauathletics.com/sports/wvball/2015-16/releases/201511150qvr74

  82. Cindy Luis November 15, 2015 1:46 pm

    75. agree 3 tough matches ahead. Was at the UCI match last year. “Eaters should have won but after their obnoxious crowd left at the end of Set 3, Wahine able to win.
Cal Poly a tough place to play. Davis won their last week. For some reason UH has struggled at UCSB the past two years.

  83. Cindy Luis November 15, 2015 1:53 pm

    Other top 25 scores Sunday

Thanks for everyone’s post..Congratulations Ladies for clinching a Share of the Conference Championship…Can we just keep winning the last couple so we can be the outright CHAMPS!
I don’t mine sharing things with others but not being volley champs epecially with Long Beach St. (lol)

  85. Ron November 15, 2015 2:09 pm

Instead of ranting about Dave’s handling of the setting position I will be civil and just agree with Crossfitter’s and Bleachercoaches comments. I also agree about Clare-M being good.

    link to the boxscore above.
    I’ll be back later.

  87. noblesol November 15, 2015 2:14 pm

#66 I think the audio went out to save the band, and by extension the UC Davis music department, more public embarrassment. They’ve got my vote for worst band at a volleyball match this year.

  88. noblesol November 15, 2015 2:43 pm

My guess, Clare-Marie is also a good photo journalist. http://hawaiiathletics.com/news/2015/11/15/WVB_1115154413.aspx?path=wvball

That or someone goofed and left out the game’s serve specialist MVP.

HOW THEY FARED: UH’s NONCONFERENCE OPPONENTS

  91. 'ohanaInBellingham November 15, 2015 3:09 pm

    I meant to write Clare-Marie in #68.

Thank you to the UH fans who continue to cheer louder than the host fans, while keeping it classy!

  92. tongo November 15, 2015 3:34 pm

#87 Funny, their band was indeed so very bad! For what many perceived as a flat performance by the wahines this afternoon, the ladies did hold the Mustangs as a team to .113 hitting pct from their season average of .251, and also held their big gun Squyres to .154 hitting pct for the match from her season average of .215. So, wahines remain solid defensively in spite of lackluster offensive performance.

  93. Ashley November 15, 2015 5:28 pm

the match time was so usual that i actually missed the game. oh well, doesn’t sound like they were stellar much. hopefully they do better on Tuesday.

Jack Reese signed his LOI, he picked UH over Lewis.
    I like his confidence. http://triblive.com/sports/hssports/volleyball/9421057-74/hawaii-reese-volleyball#axzz3rcxByzp8

    Hi Cindy,

Thanks for the link to Dave’s interview before the trip, it was great! I’m a little slow to catch up on the VB blog today.

I need a better computer, lol. By the time I got to the 3rd game, the whole match was over. Oh well, GO BOWS!

A win is a win no matter what. Continued success to our Rainbow Wahines. Coaches coach and fans have the blog to coach in.

I was at today’s match and a “pretty” win it wasn’t but at least it was a win.
After the first set I was wondering if it was 2013 all over again (where the visiting Wahine lost to UCD).
Na Wahine seemed sluggish and out of sync at times.

Cindy, do you know if the team has their pregame meal TOGETHER before the match?
I was surprised to discover I was staying at the same hotel as the team and was on the same floor as several players.
Even more surprised to see some of the traveling entourage at the hotel’s breakfast buffet (not terrible, but quite limited) the morning of the match.
I would have hoped UH could afford to spring for a more substantial healthy pregame meal.

Don’t know the attendance, but seemed to be about evenly split between UH fans and Davis fans, although the Davis fans were much more vocal.

I’m no judge of bands, but maybe the UCD band members who showed up were just the ones who could still play after the long battle of bands with the Cal Poly band the prior night after the football game. I attended that too and the ticket from the football game provided admission to several other events including the Wahine’s match.

    Hi Cindy,
Although I already know the answer to this question I’ll ask it anywayz. How is it, that the powers that be at the Star Advertiser, will spend, and I do mean spend so much effort to 3 FULL pages of how the UH Football team LOST in a very ugly match, versus a less than 1/2 a page to a winning, almost Big West championship clinching Wahine Volleyball team?!? Where are their priorities?!? The attendance can’t even begin to justify the attention. Don’t get me wrong, I really feel for those guys going through the transition they’re going through, but the Star Advertiser has their devotion barking up the wrong tree. Present company excluded. GO BOWS!

irt to darkfire: you are so right in your comments. The wahine should have been given a bigger space in the newspaper. The wahine volleyball team is a positive bent which the general sporting public would rather read than the negative bent on the UH football team esp. with the depressing headline in the sports section first page.
Oh, well, I’m sure the volleyball team will be given more space as they go on and win their remaining 3 games unequivocably clinching the BW title. Nothing more and nothing less. Cheers!!

    TO answer a few questions
I am not on the trip so can’t tell you about breakfast quality.. It was an odd start time to the meal protocol was off. From when I have been on the road, breakfast is usually very casual, they come down during a certain time frame, not necessarily at the exact same time.

As for the newspaper, are you just noticing the football wrap? Are we discussing Sunday’s paper? We’ve been doing this for 15 years. It’s an 8 page section that wraps around the main section, Wahine advance was on Page 1 of the main section. The 8 pages usually have 3 pages of UH and 5 pages for the rest of college football.

As for Monday, the Warrior replay is something we’ve been doing for at least 5 years. But you’re welcome to call the paper to complain.
    Gotta run
