18. Hartong wanted to play for UH ever since she was very young. Fell in love with the culture when taking a family vacation. Her grandfather, a Pearl Harbor survivor, also hoped she’d be a Wahine. Saw DVDs of her play for UH freshman year; passed away the January after that.
from what her dad told me, took a tour of UH while playing here HS sophomore (think it was Ann Kang tourney.Orally committed then.
Had over 100 scholarship offers . She never changed her mind.
Dad said she had a wahine poster on her wall at age 10

Would be interesting if you could tell Cindy which schools you chose UH over.
Wanna say that other mid-majors were very interested in you.
California was another option, yet its/Feller’s heyday is quickly ending (as fast as it almost begun really).

11. 13. 14. Well said and I couldn’t have phrased it any better. Yes Emily has grown leaps and bounds for the 3 years, just raising her standards each year, when it was seemingly impossible to be better than she was last Fall. She has, I witnessed that Saturday. As Shoji mentioned, he had no idea from her freshmen year, how great she has become today.

Cindy: Don’t know what happen to my post? However, concisely, put, Emily Hartong will go down as one of the best UH WVB athletes in history. Charming girl, great family, excellent student, and good friend. The opposite of a Jane Croson, though I hope Jane is happy and gets her degree!

That being said, watching Emily get stronger, keep up academics, hits a heavy , heavy ball, this year’s terminator, having National and Olympic, pro VB potential, and being athletically in great shape, plus a very beautiful young women, one that I would want my granddaughters to emulate.

Go Emily Hartong, have a great senior season , and go get that National title for team and Dave Shoji.

Regarding Emily Hartong, great family stock, great parents, excellent student athlete and person in HS and hometown. A real contrast to Jane Croson!

Emily, thank you so very much for your being a Rainbow Wahine for four years ! I hope your team strikes that special chemistry, and wins the national title, what a fitting way for you the seniors and possibly Dave , if he chooses to leave as a lasting UH WVB legacy.!

Emily, great adult, you will do well in business, academic and global athletic world. A lot of us, even oltimers, try to cross train, stay fit, however , from your freshman to senior, year, you have gotten stronger, better muscle mass, jump higher, and hit a heavy, heavy ball, ala past OH terminators. And this is the least important, Emily ,when game is not on the line, has one of the greatest smiles and demeanors, a truly , now in her twenties, beautiful young woman and UH athlete and will be a great mom and wife!

Mahalo to Emily, all accolades well deserved, and Emily, and team , do us a favor, and get a great win against Arizona , and Ms. Croson, wish her the best, that she gets her degree!

Aloha Emily Hartong, truly Olympic, and National team member potential!!

Thanks for the kind words, Ron. Didn’t see the finished product. Brought a mockup to practice last week so the players could see the big photo. The Goodmans thought they looked like they belonged in Twilight.
I am proud of the coverage we’ve been able to give the sport here, where it is so loved.

Great job by you and Ann in todays paper. I bet that you guys set a standard that no other paper covering volleyball can even get close to. You and your reporting are an important factor as to why Wahine volleyball is so popular here in Hawaii.

8. thanks. as mentioned I was on my way out to practice. just noticed Hartong’s name and posted.
Danielson did win. I was asked to write the story on her when she was a finalist by the organizer’s.
5. Yes, Texas got in last night. they were in Gym 1 this morning after UH’s practice. Said hello to Elliott. didn’t stay to watch. but didn’t ask if I could, either.
