It wasn’t what I was watching for other than to know that she is the primary S-R person when she is back there.
34. scary that I can remember 20-30 years ago but last week … not so much. Thank you for your kind words. I’m just doing my job.

He stated that one of the major reasons Hartong had an “off” night was her concern about passing. With teams targeting her, Hartong will be THE primary receiver and passer for the rest of the season. The work this involves—I would guess opposing coaches believe—will tire her out. I’m not too sure if this will be true. Hartong is in such great physical shape and is, by reputation, a tireless worker.

After the Wichita State tournament in which I saw on video all three teams target Hartong on serves, I focused on whether Fullerton would use the same strategy. As I said before, I was amazed because Fullerton did not serve anyone except to Hartong and I DELIBERATELY kept close track of this throughout the match. If someone else received a serve it was only because she “poached” the serve in front of Hartong.

Your insight and recall make me. a simple observer and fan, better and more aware of the strategy and thinking not only by Coach Dave but of other coaches/opponents, too. Thank you so much for all that you do/write. Em is fullfilling her role as senior leader captain along with Mita and Ali. And team is stepping up to contribute in their own ways, too. This is getting to be BIG in so many ways. Go Wahine!

Don’t think they are targeting her 100 percent of the time but she is a big part of the serve-receive when she is back there and one of the two primary passers. In most recent memory, teams used to target Danielson much the same way.

IMHO it was Hartong taking some trouble sets, not having time to get an approach. You saw her hit a number of times flat-footed. Uiato went to Taylor, the hot hitter, in Set 2, when Hartong was playing middle back during the 20-0 service rn by Longo. She did get dug, was 2-2-13 in Set 3 when no one on the Hawaii side played particularly well after that blowout in Set 2.
As pointed out by the Wichita State coach last week, they felt that they needed to focus on Hartong because from what they saw of Taylor and Manu-Olevao, they were good but not consistent. Taylor was simply more physical than anyone the Titans could put up against her. Uiato did a nice job getting Taylor 1-on-1 opportunities, both sides of the net.

As it is he took Kastl out for Tai to go back in. Don’t get me wrong, Tai is becoming my new favorite player and I love her introduction video. Just looking towards the next game…

Again, teams are trying to get her off stride by targeting her with serves and cheating towards her with two blockers. That strategy is not working too well because Taylor, Manu-Olevao, and Adolpho have become strong offense threats, especially in the last few games. Hartong hardly got any swings and kills with her being in the back row when Longo went on her serving run in the 2nd set.
