Years from now, people will only look at lists and see who made it. Normal folks won’t know about the disrespect just that Taylor got 2nd team. IMHO it was a slap in the face to what the Wahine had accomplished this season.

Technically he had been working without a signed contract, the last which expired last Feb. 28.

New extension is for six years. current salary is about $180,000 before bonuses. John Cook at Nebraska makes $400,000. Jerritt Elliott at Texas about $354,000. Even Sealy at UCLA makes more at $196,000.

Shoji said that the new contract will include an opt-out clause.

My feeling has long been he’ll stay through 2016, at the end of which he will be 70.
But this is the first time when we’ve spoken that I’ve heard him so tired. Part of it IMHO is all the issues with the NCAA and AVCA because no matter what Hawaii does, it will never be good enough.

I remember that when Hawaii went to the final four in 2009 and he was national coach of the year, the program mentioned all the milestones reach by coaches for wins, 100, 200, 300 etc. Shoji was not on the list and he had reach 1,000.

Shoji has been a caretaker of the game for decades before the rest of the college world got on board. Hawaii has cared about volleyball before many of these colleges even sponsored the sport.

Our national POY candidate engaged Minnesota’s Daly Santana (probable National POY) mano-a-mano in Set 4 of the Quarterfinals, and if Taylor had the backup in that set the way Santana did, the UH would have, should have, could have gone on to Set 5.

POWER FIVE RESULTS:

BIG TEN (14 conference teams) = 16 AAs on 1st, 2nd, 3rd teams
1st team = 6
2nd team = 7
3rd team = 3
HM = 9
(16 AAs is a new record for the Big Ten.)

BIG 12 (9 teams) = 8 AAs
1st = 4
2nd = 2
3rd = 2
HM = 3
(Texas led the nation with the most honorees for a single team with 5 overall. Big 12 is the only conference with 2 teams with multiple 1st team members: Texas and Kansas — Havili and Payne, neither a national POY candidate — had 2 each.)

PAC-12 (12 teams) = 8 AAs
1st = 2
2nd = 3
3rd = 3
HM = 3
Will they name Samy Bricio of Southern California a Co-POY?

SEC (13 teams) = 3 AAs
1st = 1
2nd = 1
3rd = 1
HM = 11

ACC (15 teams) = 1 AA
1st = 0
2nd = 0
3rd = 1
HM = 11 … 11? Really?

NON-POWER FIVE RESULTS:

WEST COAST (10 teams) = 2 AAs on 1st, 2nd, 3rd teams
1st = 1
2nd = 0
3rd = 1
HM = 4

MISSOURI VALLEY (10 teams) = 0 AA
1st = 0
2nd = 0
3rd = 0
HM = 5 (ties the MVC’s league-high record of 5 overall honorees)

BIG EAST (10 teams) = 1 AA
1st = 0
2nd = 0
3rd = 1
HM = 2

BIG WEST (9 teams) = 2 AA
1st = 0
2nd = 1
3rd = 1
HM = 0 (Did think Long Beach State’s Jenelle Hudson would get HM. Not to be.)

We know how good they are. I pay little attention to these awards.

bummed that taylor didn’t get on the 1st team, but a great honor nonetheless! and it gives her some added motivation for next year.

glad that magill made one of the lists. perhaps hawaii’s elite 8 appearance bumped her up from the HM list. wish hawaii could’ve had her for more than just 2 years.

And that it mentioned that it was agreed upon before the season even started? I think, and this is jut my guess, he knew he was coming back and with all the hopeful recruits coming in, future looks bright! So here’s to the UH AD making it all good and official. Cheee!

Three way tie for the lead between Santana, Brisco and Carlini. Nikki’s 4th and Alhassan 5th.

Not really upset because the bs is the fabric of collegiate sports.
What I like Coach Shoji to focus on is the inclusion of a freshman setter on the first team, the Minnesota setter that was a big reason NaWahine lost. The hope is that the coaching staff will give Iosia a fair shot at starting.

Not only will this fuel Nikki’s drive next season, but maybe it will entice Dave to stay another season (or two) to prove AVCA/NCAA wrong.
