You admit in your latest comment that you need to convert digs to points, which is what I posted. Your comment, “If Hawaii had more digs lets say 2 to 3 more each set they would have had more wins,” is therefore incomplete, given your latest post. You also fail to consider that without more digs, UH could still be a better team with a better record with more aces and blocks, and a higher kill percentage (leaving fewer chances for the opponent to attempt a kill). Again, you are being way too simplistic–sorry, I mean you are just being you, not an expert.

As you surmise all digs does not convert into points. If Hawaii could convert 2 of those 3 extra digs that would have been a swing of 4 points.

In 5 of the 6 games lost there were 7 matches loss by 2 points. 3 matches loss by
3 or 4 points. Yes simplistic however many Wahine teams were always up there in the numbers of digs when they had a very good year. Of those 5 losses they may have had the chance to win 3. Record would be 24-3.

Sure there are many other things to consider but looking at an increase amount of digs that creates more opportunities to at least score a kill and a point that would have made for different outcomes.

As you know defense this year not as good an consistent of years past. Setting consistently is another topic in itself.

I maybe being to harsh but you appear to be one who knows quite a bit with a swagger type of personality with a name like Maverick.

There is double speak when it comes to how much/well the team benefits with a certain 3x Olympian as setter’s-coach.

The HC ultimately and dutifully lacks confidence in his young frosh.

Palama style of VB doesn’t necessarily translate easily into Punahou style, the current quarterback is, thinks-me-entitled gal (i.e. entitlement, all the way around the merry go ’round mulberry bush BIG mother goose egg).

Having one or two more digs does not necessarily translate into more wins. You assume the digs translate into more points and more sets won and then more matches won. You still need to pass the ball well and then turn the digs into points. Also you assume more digs without any loss in blocks. Your assertion is too simplistic, but I guess I am being too harsh–after all, you admit you are not an expert.

For me, this team suffers from a lack of focus/mental strength/sense of urgency (losing the first set to Riverside is the latest example), lack of a go-to terminator (Nikki’s is good but not quite yet at Hartong’s level), and really atrocious passing that makes setting more of an adventure than it should be. Some of this is explained by youth of the team, lack of top tier recruits who are now juniors or seniors, and most importantly, ineffective coaching.

We can complain about how unfair the Big West schedule is to UH, how hard it is to recruit someone from the mainland to Hawaii, how big money football has changed the competitive balance in women’s volleyball, etc. etc. Or we can demand more from the program.

We have a good young nucleus with a couple more good players on the way. Hopefully, this year’s experience will translate into better play next year–this will depend primarily on the players and secondarily on the coaches. Both have to want to be much better than they are today.

Someone asked about why they cleared the arena. Wasn’t to clean it. I’m in here and not seeing a lot of janitorial staff. but there wasn’t that many fans to make a mess. Maybe 1500.

I think they over-estimated how many people would come to basketball.
It did avoid people with reserved volleyball seats having to ask people with general admission basketball tickets to move.

Still think they could have easily done a 2-for-1 promotion but …

Most teams that have great blocking stats will not have as great digging stats (and vise versa) as a block takes a dig chance away from the defenders.

A block that ends a play will always be a point. Also, a block than ends a play will also show up in the stats.

Some can hit fastballs the best, some can hit curves the best and some can hit changeups the best. Can a hitter adapt to hitting fast and slow sets consistenly?

Having more blocks does not equate to having less digs. If ball blocked but a point not scored means no block added into the stats. Hawaii has blocked a lot this year and many are also returned.

Thus having that 2 to 3 digs more a set the Wahine would and could of been a top 10 team.
