Gameday: Nebraska

By Brian McInnis on December 22, 2014

Hawaii has so far feasted on its early season schedule. Now the meat gets a little tougher. The Rainbow Warriors (8-3) will be fully stocked against Nebraska tonight in the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic first round. They’ll need it against a Cornhuskers (6-3) team holding foes to under 40 percent from the field on the season. The winner gets No. 11 Wichita State in the semifinals on Tuesday. Hawaii-Nebraska tipoff will be closer to 8:30 than 8 … as […]

Phil Martin turns back clock

By Brian McInnis on July 1, 2014

Phil Martin is going retro in Manoa. The 34-year-old former Hawaii Rainbow Warrior is now a family man living on Oahu and has put a professional basketball career in Italy behind him. However, that doesn’t mean he’s done with hoops entirely. Martin, now of the local fitness industry, is playing as a reserve big man for Clark Hatch Fitness — which he helps sponsor — in the College Summer League in Manoa. He had a few nice plays off the bench […]

Summer league final set

By Brian McInnis on August 9, 2013

We have our title match in place. In the first of two College Summer League semifinals at Maryknoll, Julian Sensley uncorked a vintage 33-point performance to lead Wealth Strategy Partners over defending champion Solar Universe, 94-86. In the second semi, top-seeded Central Medical Clinic was surgical late in an 85-67 win over Clark Hatch Fitness. Bill Amis scored 21 points in the victory, in which CMC had to rally from an eight-point halftime deficit. No. 1 Central Medical Clinic (8-3) […]

Semifinal storylines

By Brian McInnis on August 8, 2013

It’s just about time for the College Summer League semifinals at Maryknoll. In Game 1 at 6 p.m., defending champion and second-seeded Solar Universe takes on No. 3 Wealth Strategy Partners. Summer league watchers will recall these two teams got into it a bit the first of two times they met. (More on that below. However, the second meeting just a week ago was uneventful, a Wealth Strategy win against shorthanded Solar.) At full strength, Solar has plenty of players […]

Clark Hatch, Wealth Strategy advance

By Brian McInnis on August 7, 2013

The College Summer League playoffs got started with both a bang and a thud on Tuesday night at Maryknoll’s gym. In the first of two opening-round games, No. 4 Clark Hatch Fitness rallied to prevail 76-71 over No. 5 National Fire Protection and earn a date with top-seeded Central Medical Clinic on Thursday. Leon Ballard scored 19 points to lead the way. In the nightcap, it was a no-doubter as No. 3 Wealth Strategy Partners coasted behind Julian Sensley, Waly […]

Scrappy night at summer league

By Brian McInnis on July 10, 2013

To quote Ron Burgundy, “That escalated quickly. That really got out of hand fast!” While no tridents were lobbed or hand grenades thrown, Tuesday night’s College Summer League action briefly became closer to Will Ferrell in Anchorman’s street melee scene than Will Ferrell playing hoops in Semi-Pro.  Chippy play in the second half of Solar Universe’s 97-84 win over Wealth Strategy Partners ramped up steadily, until a frustrated Julian Sensley got into it with UH senior guard Brandon Spearman with […]

Summer League Saturday recap

By Brian McInnis on July 7, 2012

Hoops fans at the Manoa District Park gym were treated to quite the contest on Saturday night between the league leaders of the 36th College Summer League, unbeatens Flipbooks Hawaii (4-0) and Grantco Pacific (3-0). The infusion of current UH players this week for summer school undoubtedly helped spice things up, but leave it to one of the old guard to have the last word on the matter. UH alum Julian Sensley put the exclamation point on a back-and-forth affair, […]
