Amid some commotion about whether Hawaii freshman guard Isaac Fleming would be able to play in the College Summer League on Saturday, two former Rainbow Warriors floor generals stepped to the forefront.
Practice? Y’all want to talk about practice? Already? Believe it or not (I can’t), it’s that time again, ladies and gents. The Hawaii men’s basketball team starts up full practices for the 2013-14 season on Friday — a good two and a half weeks ahead of the traditional start to practices of past seasons around Oct. 15. The NCAA bumped up the time coaches get to spend with their players before the season, giving them 30 days of full practices […]
Adding injury to insult, Hawaii point guard Jace Tavita suffered a dislocated left pinkie finger in UH’s 64-61 loss to Cal Poly on Saturday’s senior night. He played the last 10-15 minutes of the game with it, UH coach Gib Arnold said. Unlike Brandon Spearman’s ankle sprain, the team doesn’t believe it to be a serious setback, though. Tavita is set to have a minor surgery on Tuesday to re-align his finger, after which Arnold hopes he’ll be good to […]
The Hawaii men’s basketball team was able to handle the biggest team (aside from itself) in the Outrigger Hotels Rainbow Classic on Friday night, prevailing 76-64 over Maryland-Eastern Shore. The next two opponents, including today’s contest against Arkansas-Pine Bluff, will present a different sort of challenge. UAPB and Houston Baptist, guard-oriented teams, will likely look to test the Rainbow Warriors’ ability to bring the ball upcourt cleanly — especially after UH faltered in that aspect late against UMES. As I […]
A weekend retreat to Molokai seems to have done the Hawaii men’s basketball team good. For starters, junior forward Christian Standhardinger made a sooner-than-expected return to the court coming off his staph infection on his right elbow. His arm is still wrapped up; it will probably be that way going into Friday’s exhibition vs. Hawaii Pacific and the Nov. 9 regular-season opener. “Everything is fine,” Standhardinger said on Monday. “They cut it open, and it (healed) a lot quicker than […]
One of the most interesting storylines around the Hawaii men’s basketball team all season will be point guard play. Jace Tavita has assumed the mantle of the starter after coming in from Utah nearly two years ago and redshirting since that time. Barring something drastic, he’ll get the bulk of the time at the position. But you can’t, obviously, have him responsible for all 40 minutes every game of the season. With no other traditional point guards on the roster […]
Anyone who remembers this video will recognize the fact that Hauns Brereton ate a proverbial extra scoop of poi for Central Medical Clinic before Thursday night’s College Summer League game against Grantco Pacific. Brereton erupted for 47 points in a comeback 101-97 win, his second 40-point-plus outing in two games since arriving for summer school on July 1. With the UH senior swingman the focal point of the CMC offense, senior point guard and UH teammate Jace Tavita continually looked […]
