The Shambargo

By Brian McInnis on February 4, 2014

That’s what I’m calling it until the media embargo on Keith Shamburger is lifted — the Shambargo. Things in Hawaii basketball land took a bizarre twist last week with talk of some team issues following the 92-83 home loss to Long Beach State, and the first-half benching of Shamburger, then the reigning Big West Player of the Week, against Cal State Northridge on Saturday. After Monday’s practice, UH coach Gib Arnold said Shamburger was not talking to the media until […]

MASH unit

By Brian McInnis on October 24, 2013

A confluence of circumstances left the Hawaii basketball team more shorthanded than usual on Wednesday. In addition to existing injuries to center Caleb Dressler and point guard Niko Filipovich, UH was without lead guard Keith Shamburger, shooting guard Jack Hackman and wing Negus Webster-Chan. A team manager was also out of commission. Shamburger and Hackman (and the manager) were out with illnesses. Webster-Chan took a shot to the eye earlier this week. Dressler still seems a long ways off from […]

Two-day recap and roundup

By Brian McInnis on October 11, 2013

This seems like a good time to recap the last couple days of events in UH hoops. So, after what coach Gib Arnold considered the worst practice of the young season Tuesday — featuring his first five getting booted from the proceedings — how would the Rainbow Warriors respond on Wednesday? Pretty well, actually. Arnold called it the best session so far. The previously shunned five of Keith Shamburger, Garrett Nevels, Brandon Spearman, Isaac Fotu and Christian Standhardinger set the […]

Injury ins and outs

By Brian McInnis on October 5, 2013

Even at this early stage of the preseason, some wear and tear and taken hold on the Hawaii men’s basketball team. Center Caleb Dressler remained out with back tightness on Friday, and is doubtful to participate in the team’s first practice scrimmage with referees in the Stan Sheriff Center on Saturday afternoon. Joining Dressler on the sideline Friday — also with a sore back — was point guard Keith Shamburger, meaning increased reps for Quincy Smith, Niko Filipovich and Dyrbe […]

2013 Summer League postmortem

By Brian McInnis on August 13, 2013

As College Summer Leagues go, this one was quite memorable. The crowds were consistently good, there was always someone or something interesting to watch on a nightly basis, and you couldn’t have asked for a better venue for the playoffs at Maryknoll’s new gym. Now that the 37th running of the league is over and Julian Sensley and Wealth Strategy Partners won the championship (88-78 over top-seeded Central Medical Clinic on Saturday), let’s look back at how the 2013-14 University […]

Clark Hatch, Wealth Strategy advance

By Brian McInnis on August 7, 2013

The College Summer League playoffs got started with both a bang and a thud on Tuesday night at Maryknoll’s gym. In the first of two opening-round games, No. 4 Clark Hatch Fitness rallied to prevail 76-71 over No. 5 National Fire Protection and earn a date with top-seeded Central Medical Clinic on Thursday. Leon Ballard scored 19 points to lead the way. In the nightcap, it was a no-doubter as No. 3 Wealth Strategy Partners coasted behind Julian Sensley, Waly […]

Nevels impressive in CSL debut

By Brian McInnis on July 7, 2013

Garrett Nevels made the most of his College Summer League debut on Saturday night, with one exception. The University of Hawaii transfer guard from Mount San Antonio College (Calif.) could not hit the game-winning shot from about 28 feet at the final buzzer. Nevels and his new National Fire Protection team fell, 96-95, to Central Medical Clinic at the Manoa Park Gym, despite 28 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists from the UH newcomer. It was an impressive debut in […]

They're (getting) here

By Brian McInnis on July 6, 2013

At least some of the new and returning Hawaii hoops players will be in action tonight at the Manoa Park Gym for the College Summer League. It’s not 100 percent certain which players will and won’t be there Saturday night, but at least some should. Based on the initial league rosters, the Rainbow Warriors who might be watchable tonight are: 6 p.m. game, Wealth Strategy Partners vs. Grantco Pacific: Caleb Dressler 7:30 game, National Fire Protection vs. Central Medical Clinic: […]
