Response fallout

By Brian McInnis on May 17, 2015

The University of Hawaii’s official response to the NCAA’s notice of allegations was filed and made public on Friday.
Former coach Gib Arnold, meanwhile, hasn’t yet made any public comments detailing his official response, although his attorney James Bickerton has indicated that the overriding theme will be contesting just about all aspects of UH’s version of events.

Spearman plays waiting game

By Brian McInnis on October 13, 2014

Following a summer which included a workout with the Indiana Pacers, Brandon Spearman awaits word if he will be taken in the NBA D-League draft on Nov. 1. If not, his path is clear — he’s going to Europe.

Gameday: Cal Poly // Going streaking

By Brian McInnis on February 8, 2014

Everyone’s favorite foil is back in town! Yup, it’s the Cal Poly Mustangs, who own a well-chronicled, head-scratching five-game winning streak on Hawaii. UH (15-7, 4-4 Big West) and Poly (8-13, 4-4) are both coming off of losses. Tipoff is at 7 p.m. tonight at the Stan Sheriff. The Rainbow Warriors have been pretty good at bouncing back; they’ve dropped consecutive games only twice this year. Keep your eye on Keith Shamburger’s shooting — he’s 4-for-24 in the last three […]

Gameday: Norfolk State // Spearman wins PoW

By Brian McInnis on December 30, 2013

The Hawaii men’s basketball team got some recognition to kick off its gameday preparation for Norfolk State on Monday. Senior guard Brandon Spearman was named the Big West Conference player of the week for his efforts in the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic. UH won the last two games of the tournament over Saint Mary’s and Oregon State to take the event’s consolation championship (fifth place) for the third time in four years. It was the captain’s first career weekly […]

Back to basics

By Brian McInnis on November 19, 2013

A return home from Kansas City meant a return to basic principles Monday for the Hawaii basketball team. Namely, defensive principles. UH had trouble containing Missouri’s athletic perimeter players in a 92-80 defeat on Saturday. It marked the second straight game the Rainbow Warriors gave up 90-plus points, both losses. “We actually did nothing but defense today,” UH coach Gib Arnold said. “I like how our offense is coming along, I like the tempo. We’re the 19th-ranked team in the […]

Gameday: Missouri // Fleming in fold

By Brian McInnis on November 16, 2013

Hawaii is about an hour away from its toughest test of the young season. Today’s matchup against Missouri (a team receiving AP Top 25 votes) in Kansas City, Mo., has the potential to be the most difficult game of the entire season. The 2 p.m. (local time) game is being televised on Fox Sports Midwest (not available in most formats here, unless you have satellite coverage). But it is being livestreamed on ESPN3.com, so that will be your most likely […]

UH Gameday: Tennessee State

By Brian McInnis on November 8, 2013

It’s that time again, ladies and gentlemen. College basketball teams across the country tipped off action on Friday, and UH is no different tonight against Tennessee State in the 49th Outrigger Hotels and Resorts Rainbow Classic. Remember, it’s a 6:30 p.m. start for the Rainbow Warriors against the Tigers. New Mexico State and Western Michigan follow, likely tipping that one off around 9 p.m. Senior guard Brandon Spearman will miss this tournament, and it’s probable backup point guard Quincy Smith […]

Redshirts, anyone?

By Brian McInnis on November 6, 2013

Hawaii coach Gib Arnold indicated earlier this preseason that he would make any determinations about this season’s redshirt players after the Brigham Young-Hawaii exhibition. Well, that time has arrived. The most logical candidate is true freshman Niko Filipovich, who spoke of a willingness to redshirt in the summer. But UH’s recent injuries to guards Quincy Smith (back) and Brandon Spearman (ankle) have affected UH’s depth, meaning Filipovich will not be wearing street clothes, at least for the Outrigger Hotels and […]
