Hey Duster,

Good question. As explained to me by UH soccer SID Nick Heidelberger, “The only times you get an assist from a missed shot is if it deflects off the post/crossbar or the goalkeeper and leads directly to a shot and goal. So no assist (on the Medeiros play) because it was not a pass.”
