Also 2 bad passing errors from Granato

  4. greenthumb October 13, 2017 4:13 pm

Any indications of if Maglio will end up playing all rotations at some point night? Bad time for her to rotate out with the score up.

Thank you for the direct link! ESPN U telecast is much (visually) sharper than this year’s Spectrum stream.

4, et al. have no idea. I am not there

  11. H-Man October 13, 2017 4:29 pm

Where is the Wahine block? If this lineup is not blocking, then why isn’t Burns in to try to stop the Long Beach attack. Too many kills hitting the floor.

  12. warriorwahine October 13, 2017 4:30 pm

come on wahine, clean up your act. lets go bows!

Maglio with the kill. UH up 20-17. TO Beach

  21. MeKanaka October 13, 2017 5:29 pm

Seeing the Bows struggle just to stay competitive against LBSU does not bode well with CSUN tomorrow who defeated the Beach last week. More so with the knowledge that M. Granato not at 100%

Iosia blocks Harward. UH up 23-20. TO Beach

  23. H-Man October 13, 2017 5:29 pm

  27. H-Man October 13, 2017 5:55 pm

Mags is really carrying the Wahine. Rest of team – Ho humm, sloppy play. Announcer said Burns hitting .500 and 5 kills. So it’s an all-Canadian front row attack.

49ers score 3 straight out of the timeout. It’s 19-17. TO UH

Error by Harward ends it. 25-22.

  32. H-Man October 13, 2017 6:07 pm

Wahine wins, but I come away with a sore stomach. just too much tension with their inconsistent play. Phew!

Congrats to Maglio again! Hope she keeps that up. Burns made a difference again. Hope she gets the start tomorrow.

  36. Bleachercoach October 13, 2017 7:42 pm

Yup this will be a rollercoaster type of season. Just imagined Hawaii has lost 4 of their 6 matches in 5 games. (Marquette, BYU, UCLA, Cal Poly) Their only legitimate lost was to San Diego (3 sets) and Utah (4 Sets). On the opposite we needed 5 games to come from behind 2 sets down to defeat yup , UC Riverside.
If this team somehow gets into postseason bearing what they can and cannot control, I really might need to take a “Stress Test” at the end of the season. But on a bright and very hopeful note, if we got into postseason and was to go to the Final 4 , this might be such a great story for 2017. Okay wakeup now…zzz

  37. ignaciosaid October 13, 2017 8:04 pm

starting lineup from start of season to present needs to be adjusted -game to game. Too many nagging injuries (Castillo , Burns,Greeley, Granato,Williams) limits productivity. Serving and pass receive issues (Granato , Anderson , Guinasso , Castillo- a constant accident just waiting to happen)! Burns , Howling and Williams need playing time to develop. Coaches really need to get on slacking players (Robyn did warn team–others would start if players don’t perform)! Still think Castillo should be at opp (give Sibley more playing time at OH). STILL IN IT—-GO BOWS!!!!!!!

  38. warriorwahine October 13, 2017 8:13 pm

a curious note..why is the beach and csun scheduled together again this season. i thought last season was it?

at least it wasnt a redeye and wahine won mahalo pele

  39. Cindy Luis October 13, 2017 9:31 pm

    38. it’s how they have kept the travel partners. there has been a suggestion that Hawaii and UC Davis be paired. What would help is to add a team. If the Big West had taken UC San Diego, UCSD and UCI would have made sense. OR Hawaii-UCSD. Something that continues to be discussed.
not sure why the red eye continues to be such a big deal.
the last time it happened was unscheduled because of the flight delay.
and it’s not like they have to play the same day they arrive.

  40. warriorwahine October 13, 2017 10:03 pm

    39. travel partners? what that a permanent thing now? last time i recall csun was with davis and then it was for whatever reason supposed to rotate around like swap travel partners but csun and the beach for like two years/seasons.

the red eye was caused by somebodys ridiculous poor planning and accosted na wahine last time going to csun and the beach. it also accosted wahine soccer too. a similar red eye on a halloween almost stuck na wahine to the grave left for dead at irvine. so remembering it, is to force said somebody or somebodies to not (hopefully never) let that happen again.

  41. rabbit ears October 13, 2017 10:28 pm

Hope McKenna Granato is feeling ok tomorrow. She suck it up tonight. Several comments about Players not giving 100%. (one tonight and several in the last two weeks). I just don’t see that. Looks like everyone giving it their all. IMHO

  42. Hot October 14, 2017 12:38 am

    37. Game-to-game adjustment. Really? You think it’s wise to move Castillo again to yet another position? Sibley hit .173 last year on the left. She’s hitting .190 on the right this year. I like that she is an option, but it’s ridiculous to think she will do better than Castillo on the left.

  43. ignaciosaid October 14, 2017 3:07 am

just voicing my opinions on what I’ve been watching. Castillo at 6’3″ would be better presence going up against opposing teams LOH. She is a slow starter (gimpy leg) and needs to warm-up extremities– Sibley was a frosh (behind Granato and Mitchem) and did not have have enough playing time to develop ( could have Ross , play around at times , and backrow for Granato and Castillo). And just how well is Castillo doing? You can look at the box scores , but , they don’t show the shanked passes, the missed serves slow reaction times(blocking). If you have been watching the games–you tell me! Again–just my opinion!!!

  44. menehune October 14, 2017 3:09 am

Hate to admit it but this Wahine team is not a postseason contender.

Too many service errors after a time out…whenever Castillo and Granato go back to serve, I hold my breath and hope they just get it over the net and in.

Magnum is a beast, hope the band play the Canadian anthem on her senior night and the fans join in the singing.

  45. Ki October 14, 2017 6:18 am

Any info on potential/new recruits for next year and beyond?

  46. rabbit ears October 14, 2017 8:32 am

Agree that Castillo is not a good blocker. At 6-3″ you would think she would be better. Not sure if she is not quick enough or lack hops. Unfortunately, she is our best option right now.

  47. islandman October 14, 2017 9:48 am

How does travel partners work ?
I think, so far, Burns should be in there someplace, unless she likes to come off the bench after the 1st set or her injury (floating kneecap) hampers her some.

  48. Ron October 14, 2017 10:30 am

I don’t think the Coach has given Kerstin enough playing time for her to get into a rhythm to show what she can do. Castillo does not need to be moved around. Emile needs more sets but that means we need better passing. As long as the Coach insists on playing Granato in the back row we will never have the solid passing we need and we get stuck in a bad rotation. Baby-G should be given a chance to take over Clair-Marie’s role. Ross needs to concentrate on defense. Noreen is under appreciated for her defense. Over all, both the coaching and the playing are improving. Just my thoughts.

  49. kahuna October 14, 2017 11:29 am

Blocking is not all about height. You need to read the hitters, take correct angles and even sometimes get lucky. Kendra at 6-1 and Noreen at 5-11 are better blockers because they are better blockers and not because they are tall, Kanoe Kamanao was a very good blocker at 5-8 and so was Kanani Danielson at 6-0.

Some people are just good blockers and others are not. Its not easy to explain. Just like in basketball where the tallest one is not always the better rebounder.

Going up against big time hitters will make one look like a horrible blocker. At the same time, matching up with a subpar OH will turn you into a all world blocker.

  50. noblesol October 14, 2017 12:06 pm

CMA has had a couple of rough weeks in the back row, and now the service line. They’ve started to target her. Occasionally, I think they need to sit her and give her a few plays off. She’s a smart player, tell her what she needs to do improve, get her confidence back up then put her back in.

Ross has been ok. They have her playing deep where she can react and be available for the offense. She would be better if she would stop saving so many out balls. When she is standing just a few feet in front of the back line and a shot is coming her way headed for her chest, I wish she’d recognize it as going out.

G has been trying to do a little too much from the service line. I get it, she’s trying to score points in a weak part of the rotation. But she’s got to keep them in.

Granato isn’t bad in the back row. She misses a few, but she also makes a lot of plays back there. Her passing can be weak but she’s improved there each year. On serving, she can be an adventure. I’d like to see the coaches try telling her not to look at the bench, not to look at the floor, not to bounce the ball like she’s mad at it for seven seconds. Just get ball, get whistle, get ball over. Let her natural talent take over, and let the block and defense carry the load.

As for Castillo serving. I think I get why. When she’s on, it’s a good serve. Not always for an ace, but almost always effective. Casey also isn’t that bad in the back row. Not good enough you want her back there for six rotations, but good enough she can serve. Casey needs more practice and confidence. I’d like to see her coached to go for it more. When she’s overthinking, gauging her steps, try to guide too much, the results are underwhelming.

Will Mags over play six rotations? Probably not. Not at this point. Just need to pound it into Hawaii’s setters that they need to find Mags where ever she is on the floor. Quick set her, back set her, slide set her. Get her the high ball. Set her in front of you and behind you. Get her involved early and often. Wear her out, if you can. She can better a bad set. The only other player on the floor you can say that of is Granato.

KK isn’t a great OH, but the team is better when she is out there. Maybe its chemistry, or her ability to be a bit of jack of all trades and whatever is needed when needed, or her competitiveness that gets the best out of what she has and those around her too. Whatever it is, the team is better when she’s playing.

Kahaki has I think been the team backbone. Always there, always strong, and dependable to the point of being taken for granted. She is one of those players you don’t fully appreciate until they are gone. No one on this squad is really even close to being able to replace her.

  51. islandman October 14, 2017 1:16 pm

    48 /50 . Claire had 5 digs, 1 SA, 3 SE. Gianna had 1 dig, 3 SE’s.

  52. Connor October 14, 2017 1:36 pm

#50. granato is horrible in backrow. After 3 years she still cannot pass and must average 2 service errors per match. She is not improving. Coaches must be blind not to see this.

  53. islandman October 14, 2017 1:53 pm

    52. Granato, 15 digs , 1 RE , 2 SA’s to Kahakai’s 15 digs, 2 RE’s , 2 SA’s vs. LBSU. Horribly good.

  54. 2left October 14, 2017 2:13 pm

    50. Season serve receive statistics for top 4 most receive attempts over 18 matches:

    Granato: SE = 14; TA = 356; PCT = .961
    Kahakai: SE = 15; TA = 329; PCT = .954
    Anderson: SE = 12; TA = 202; PCT = .941
    Castillo: SE = 13; TA = 138; PCT = 906

  55. 2left October 14, 2017 3:14 pm

    50. I meant to address the discussion between you and 52.

Btw – I agree totally about Kahakai. She has to be seen in person to be fully appreciated. The camera shots highlight her weakness in perhaps not having as quick feet as other top liberos. But watching her move around the court, adjust to balls in flight, set the out of system balls, and dig balls that would bounce harmlessly off of weaker women’s arms is just amazing.

  56. Cindy Luis October 14, 2017 3:54 pm

    47. travel partners are when they pair two teams. I.E. Beach and CSUN are together so any team that plays the Beach also plays CSUN that week

Cal Poly and UCSB will always be travel partners. Big West not going to make teams take two trips to that area on different weeks

    52. Granato has been subbed out in the back row for Ross lately
But they are limited to 14 subs so they have to choose wisely, especially if sets go long

as for recruiting, as have posted, No, no news other than what has been posted
    – Trinity Castaneda (6’1″ Outside) California/Shadow Hills HS
    Kamalei Krug (6-1 MB/OH) Waianae/Anuenue

    Decommit to Santa Clara
    – Liliana Light (6’1″ Setter) California/Pleasant Grove HS
    new thread up for Saturday
