new thread up with Monday’s poll
10. and all three of those losses by Hawaii were at the Pyramid.
Agree with Maverick that what has happened in the past is irrelevant since the teams are very different this season, More so Beach than Hawaii.
11 Sure Beach’s 2019 was legendary, a group of guys for the most part who had playe 7-8 years together starting in high school But it’s not like Beach donminated.
if you want to look at UH’s recent losses to the Beach I’d start with 2017 where the series is 6-2 in Beach’s favor, six of the eight going five sets, Beach is 4-2 in those
In 2017, first road trip of year, Warriors lose first night in 5, swept second night. Warriors still trying to figure out how to play Parapunov and van Tilburg together.
In 2018, both matches at the SSC went 5, teams split, then UH swept in BWC final in the Pyramid
In 2019, both matches at Long Beach State went 5, Beach wins both.
Hawaii then wins in 5 in the big west title match at the SSC, loses in 4 in the NCAA title match at the Pyramid.

Guess we’ll just have to wait and find out. Lots of volleyball to still be played, but it’ll be interesting how the 2020 season plays out…

One last point, if UH wins all its matches through the BYU series, it will be the only remaining unbeaten Div I team, not just in the BWC.

What happened since 2015 is not relevant to this year. What is relevant, as you originally pointed out, is that LBSU lost a ton while UH returned a ton. To think UH won’t sweep the series this year is either timidity or a lack of analysis of roster changes. UH is a top 2 team right now. LBSU is not close to that.

Also, since 2015, UH is 5-10 against LBSU. In 2015, UH was 3-0 against LBSU. Then LBSU’s legendary recruiting class came on board in 2016, led by Tuaniga, Ensing and #1 recruit DeFalco (an all-time great). Explains UH’s losing record against LBSU since then.

IMO, last year’s team is the greatest ever for UH, and the greatest NCAA MVB team not to have won the championship.

Plus too, in terms of LBSU in the series prior after 2015, LBSU has won 8 of the last 11. I’m sure Charlie Wade cannot take this team for granted. What’s more, with Hawaii and BYU around the corner in March, it’ll be curious to see if Hawaii will take both matches against the Cougars, and see if Hawaii will still remain the only unbeaten team in the BWC.

still think it’s Hawaii and BYU this year but anything can happen.
agree, surprised given UCLA losing at home to Princeton.
8. Matautia has been up and down. tonight very down.
UC San Diego is a very good team so no one should be surprised about the Tritons.
Setter Lloy Ball was 6-8 at IPFW. Brian Beckwith 6-6 for Hawaii.
6-8 setter Austin Buchanan has already signed with UH so he is no longer considered a recruit.
Have been mentioning since fall that Beach was not going to be that good. Hawaii beat them in October at the Pyramid.
Not sure why you think the Warriors won’t win both nights at the SSC. IMHO they will.
Hawaii has defeated Beach the last two times they’ve met at the SSC. ’18 UH senior night, ’19 Big West tournament finale.

But man…I did NOT see that coming. Hard to believe UCLA had Hawaii transfer Matautia on their side, and he struggled. I didn’t think UCLA was going to be a problem for the MPSF, especially with so many different sets of talent at their disposal. They had strange losses to UCSD(?), Penn State, and Princeton.

This Mads dude is wicked. 6’10” setter?! Good lord…I feel like that should be illegal. Most guys that are 6’10” usually stand up as a middle, and rare times where outside or opposite is seen. I never would have expected a setter of all things at 6’10”. Of course, yes, we are going to be expected to recruit a 6’8″ setter next year. But that right there is just mindboggling.

But yeah, seeing LBSU struggle with a different set of players, with only two having the most playing experience in Siegfried and Andersen, it was bound to soon fall apart for the 49ers at some point. LBSU lost over 70 percent of their lineup from last year, and they utilized a lineup that probably would have looked like a B-Team for LBSU. I didn’t think UCLA would be that opponent to do so. More importantly, I didn’t think Siegfried would struggle, especially since he is good at dominating with a good kill clip when the team needs him. By the time BWC play rolls around, I’m curious to see how Hawaii will do with this version of LBSU. Not sure if Hawaii could win both nights, but wouldn’t be surprised if they did. What do you think, Cindy?

Real turnaround from when they lost to Princeton on Thursday. The setter change up really worked for them.

Great article on the Mens team on their bye week training, Cindy. I’m really looking forward to seeing how they play next week, especially against UC Irvine.

So far this year, BYU is looking like the team to beat, and maybe even UCSB. Those teams are really good in their transition games.

Teams have a combined 40 service errors.
Bruins win 25-23
