Hawaii did lose the serve-receive battle. And as several have opined, the offense got predictable, in part due to the tough serving.
Was impressed that they were down 8-3 in Set 5 and got it to 13-12 and 14-13.
We will see what happens tonight.
Agree the more important matches are next week.
18. It’s Joselyn Robins. They were 31-0, lost 3-2. Reverse sweep after winning Sets 1 and 2 15-6, 15-8. Only Set 5 played rally score.
That was an interesting match. Regional was first time UH was playing under the experimental Big Ten format, which Michigan State had been using all year. Technical timeouts at 5 and 10. Hawaii was in the lead each time and it hurt the momentum
First time there was a 10-minute break after Set 2. Shoji has admitted that they didn’t handle that break well and came out cold in Set 3. Hawaii got worn down by the bigger Spartan block.
Wahine also dropped Set 3 the night before after that long break to Arizona State.

14. It’s funny how easy it is for an arm-chair critic to cut down the team’s play. Have you ever been in this kind of pressure situation? I doubt you handle it half as well as these guys. You likely haven’t ever played at a high-level but you can sure dish it.

These guys have worked their butts off and have had a stellar season. Not to make excuses for them, but they’ve had a crazy week with tough matches, seniors night, H awards, travelling, time changes, school work and then playing the defending National Champions at home. However they finish this season they deserve respect.

Hawaii just cannot finish any type of historical season the way we want them to. I remember one uh womens volleyball season (Jocelyn Robbins)where they were 33-0 and losing 3-1 to a well rounded Michigan St team during a sub regionals played in Hawaii. We had high expectations for them but Michigan St changed those plans…The MEN are human afterall and maybe if they win tomorrow and win the Big West tourney next week at home then go on to win a National Championship back in LBSU, our vision for them was on track. I have a big feeling Hawaii will win convincingly tomorrow

I was at the game tonight and UH simply lost the serve and receive battle when it mattered most. But they hung in there with the defending national champion on their home court. Offense too predictable at times. But what can you do when LBSU is serving lights out? Keep the fight coming UH! You’ll break through

Too many errors tonight, the team achilles heel from Last year showed up .
Kudos to stijn for playing great but he needs help offensively rado lots of kills but way too many hitting errors . He needs to clean it up and UH should win tomorrow.

12. These refs let the home team get away with too much chirping. It’s inconsistent and TJ and Ensing get away with too much. I saw it in TJ when he was in Hawaii for the USA matches, which is why I don’t think he’s tUSA material.

11. UH played up and down, sometimes well and sometimes not so well. But I wouldn’t call it a typical UH team. Long Beach was national champion for a good reason and here UH took them to the limit, losing by 2 points in the fifth set and 3 points overall. Long Beach home winning streak was all the way from 2016.

I’d add that Long Beach lost to USC on the road because they didn’t take them seriously and were not fired up. Would you then say that was typical? This was the first loss of Hawaii. Loosen up!

One more note: Irvine upset UCSB. If they do it again, then first place will play Irvine instead of UCSB. Even if Hawaii loses tomorrow night, it’s not over for them. Next week is what counts and if they can win both semifinal and final against whatever team they play, they are in the NCAA tournament. It’s tough for anybody to beat Long Beach at home, so don’t be so down on UH.

Big game – UH don”t play well. At least well enough to win. Kind of a typical UH team.
