That will not happen as that “ship has sailed” regarding a somewhat on campus stadium. What is the strategy by UH and the State for a new stadium? Is student participation a very high priority?

I don’t think there is much fervor for HS football as there was, say in the 70’s and 80’s. I grew up on Kaua’i, and the WHOLE town turned out for football games. Mandatory attendance at school pep rallies. Competition among grade levels as to who could cheer the loudest. That interest carried on into college. After watching Sam Spangler’s piece on KHON2 news about why UH students don’t attend the games, its easy to see why they don’t attend. Pure Apathy. “I’m busy doing other things,” “I don’t like football.” How about supporting the school? Your classmates on the field? School spirit and personal pride? (ala Larry Price). There is none. Free admission, Free bus shuttle, Free parking to the 1st 75 UH student cars, and what, 50 kids go? My two kids NEVER attended their high school football games. They only went the the UH games because my wife forced them to go with me (bonding time). So now they are UH fans in their own right. The current state of the student section at football and basketball games is pathetic.

If so, why do they attend and how can you build on this?
I attended our high school games, and started attending UH sports because I enjoyed playing and watching sports and because everyone else went to the games on Saturdays.

Got DL’s Vega, Matthews and Tavai too. Also LB’s Tufaga and Kamana. The scheme should be up and running properly next season. Then we can judge Batoon.

It’s important to be able to approach phase III toward the ending of that season so the recruiting this off season is critical. Much anticipated.

The offensive line, quarterback and linebackers will be really deep. Running back should be too (just the Furuta replacement). WR will be semi-young but experienced and pretty good. Interior DL needs JC help. DL will have a lot young “fits” combined with experienced (journeyman) guys looking for a breakout “star”. Secondary will need JC help too (DB youth is one year away yet). They too have journeyman types that will be ready to contribute.

If Batoon can get lucky and acquire the right JC guys (CB, SS, DT) and furthers the development of young guys like Kaneshiro, Choi, Scott, Taala, Laulu, Dalton, Kahahawai-Welch and Muasau. Then get the other young players like Ritner, Blocker, Bowers, Killins Washington and Francisco some meaningful rotational reps, and combine them with Davis, Pritchard, Pavihi, Ford and Thomas this defense will be incredible. Seriously. One JC class away from incredibility. Look at the pieces, Imagine. Unreal.

He dreamed of playing here and when he got the chance, he turned down offers from other FBS programs to play here.

For 2 years now JR has anchored and lead the offensive line, protecting Cole’s blind side.

While I am sure JR will be on the sideline supporting the team as he always has for the past 4 years, it is with sadness knowing that this Warrior will not be able to compete this week in what will be arguably, the team’s biggest game in more than 10 years when they play for the Western Division Championship of the Mountain West Conference.

Thank you JR. Thank you for helping Hawaii get here. Thank you for being a selfless contributor and teammate. Thank you, for living Aloha and playing Warrior.

Even in pass protection. An overwhelming type blocker. But if/when he has to figure out (decipher) who to pick up he misses his block. Run and pass. Random and not real often but noticeable on video. Maybe unfamiliarity some (Sunia had difficulty with that too but not Wa’a). 1st team reps this week should help fix it.

Next year the O-line will be UNREAL. Hard to imagine the depth. Got to make sure 2021 version is ready to transition as well. But next year’s O-line should dominate the Conference.

I figure it’s worth a post.
