Leland Green, Brandon Thomas leaving UH basketball team

Reserve guards Leland Green and Brandon Thomas are leaving the UH basketball team.

Both players requested — and received — releases from their scholarships, then entered the NCAA portal, a list of available transfer players that is circulated to all NCAA programs.

Green played in 57 games, starting 36, in his first two UH seasons. But he underwent shoulder surgery at the end of the 2017-2018 season. This recently completed season, he averaged 8.3 minutes and 2.6 points in 27 games.

In his second season after transferring from a junior college, Thomas averaged 6.1 minutes and 1.2 points in 13 games.

The Rainbow Warriors now have four available scholarships to fill the 2019 recruiting class.

This does not come as a surprise for those of us who know these players and others on the team. 1 to 2 more will request their releases soon.

Relax on the admission requirements? Change coach? Or see the demise of the men’s basketball program.

Good luck to both young men.
Hope we can get a couple nice hop n pop athletes to replace them.
    Go Warriors!

Why can’t Hawaii Basketball & baseball be in the mw conference.

They could easily be the sweet 16 I think.
If there is another conference realignment I fear Hawaii football maybe left out like other Hawaii programs.

I think I will be using my money. To donate to Hawaii instead of beer and 420.

Sacrifice must be made for the good of the Hawaii.

Back to football. How quickly we forget the one, two or three-win seasons under Norm Chow. I would have been happy with a 5-win season under Chow. Now folks are talking 8/9-win season. I’ll take that anytime, especially when UH is scheduling multiple P5/Top20 schools annually.

  5. iGrokSpock March 28, 2019 2:27 pm

Best wishes to Leland and Brandon. Thank you for being Warriors.

  6. Mr Bill March 28, 2019 2:30 pm

With the exodus of both Leland and Brandon, the proof will be in the pudding to see if Ganot can actually recruit some GOOD players. My feeling is not and that we will attract more middle of the court type players talent wise.

It is time for all of us to get our brakes checked as we go through this down hill slide in the program. The demise of the program is evident.

UH Admin – need to change admission requirements to level the playing ground with other major college/university programs.

Dave Matlin – Exit interviews with the departing players?

No. Let’s “get back” to Men’s/Warrior volleyball. They have what it takes to bring a national championship home. Direct all your positive sports energy to them, now.

All I want from UH football right now is to explain how they managed to lose their home bowl game to a Louisiana team that’s NOT LSU. I’ll be concerned with their Springy practice after I see that explanation.

Ganot needs scorers who can handle the ball and shoot 3s. We need players who can run up the court with speed and explosion. Other than Avea I haven’t seen anybody else who can jump and dunk with authority. Raimo should spend the entire off season learning how to make free throws-he was absolutely terrible this past season and he has no outside game and he also misses a lot of easy layups. The 3 big men needs to be stronger, tougher, and be more physical and work on post moves (again off season improvements). With 2 players leaving it’s an opportunity to get better. We are losing about 30 plus points per game with the seniors and now 2 early departures. Go get em coach!

The proof will be in the pudding to see what kind of recruiting that Ganot is capable of. Could this be the demise of the program? Will there be any more exits? Maybe 1 or 2 more…..

The university needs to change admission requirements and level the playing field with other top universities to “get” better players.

Marlin – Exit interviews with Leland and Brandon?

    2. In the MW, for baseball and basketball, we would have to pay higher travel subsidies than we pay now.

  12. Trunks420 March 28, 2019 3:21 pm

Alan you’re right. I’m saying if Hawaii can’t compete in MW with football then Hawaii will get dumped on again this time permanently with everyone expanding their stadium and having successful seasons in all their sports.

The p5 programs will expand in 4yrs and best believe Boise and other MW teams will jump when their school is called to join.

And if Hawaii don’t make a championship then they will be overlooked again.

Harsh yes fair no but in life things are not always fair.

Thus why I and all Hawaii needs to demand success in all sports Especially football since it’s what all the p5 program look at for teams to join.

I know Hawaii is fine with rolo but what Hawaii needs is greatness in the coach and players to go beyond there limits.

That is what a true warrior is about.

This season is going to make or break Hawaii chances to join p5 in few years

And Rolo needs to roll the dice when things are looking bad in games.
Like change QB and players if they are not executing plays properly or throwing int’s.

Maybe he should throw in a few no huddle plays or something to make defense react

I hate this. Coach Ganot accepted him back. He worked himself back into the rotation. He was reasonably effective at times. And now, what? He’s going to play DII? I valued his contribution to the team. This is very disappointing.

  14. cappie the dog March 28, 2019 3:49 pm

High altitude was such kryptonite to Hawaii, Coach Wallace had to hire team psychologists. Even when Hawaii had a considerable advantage in talent over Reggie Minton’s Air Force teams, it was always a struggle. What symbolizes Hawaii on the road in the WAC for me is this: “Trebelhorn for 3! It’s good!!!” I don’t have to check the record books. I would wage that Hawaii never beat Wyoming, Colorado State, or New Mexico more than six points on the road. This is so symbolic of Hawaii’s road woes. When they won, it had to be the crazy way. Luc Longley blocked a Terry Houston shot that went into the basket for the go-ahead basket .

  15. Aaron March 28, 2019 3:53 pm

I’m a fan of Leland Green. He should transfer to HPU.

2 more scholarships is great news, though!

  16. islandman March 28, 2019 6:08 pm

Why would a P5 conference want UH ? The travel for them to Hawaii is too many miles for a conference game, using today’s travel modes. Unless the travel gets easier somehow.

  17. Trunks420 March 28, 2019 7:20 pm

Island man your right and I have no answer for why they would.

Think I will just enjoy watching Hawaii football playing in the Mountain West.

If they get left behind in the next conference expansion so be it.

At least Hawaii will renew its rivalry with Idaho and New Mexico State.

  18. cappie the dog March 28, 2019 8:18 pm

Aaron: I think Coach Ganot should go the JC route. Transferring would make even less sense. I cheered on Adhar Mayens for four seasons, and I would have cheered on Brandon Thomas for four seasons, too. But freeing up two scholarships is a silver lining of sorts. Zigmars Raimo obviously worked his tail off in the off-season. What if he bailed after his sophomore season? Who knows? Maybe Thomas has some latent talent. Well, we’ll never know now, because he’s transferring.

  19. roygbivs March 28, 2019 10:30 pm

    This doesn’t surprise me.

    Next players up!!
I want players who WANTS to be here, wear that
    HAWAII across the jersey.

    It’s all about the recruiting…

    The process…

AD Matlin’s contract extended to 2023.

Best wishes to both Leland and Brandon, think they could have done more for UH but they didn’t get used right. Hope they can show what they’ve got at the D1 level. It’s not a question of loyalty.

Leland wasn’t the best shooter but he was aggressive/confident. Think Dwyane Wade, but of course not the same level; point is he could play basketball, but kinda getting lost in this shift to sabermetrics and efficiency.

Brandon is like any shooter, he needed time. No shooter can thrive in 5-minutes off the cold bench at the end of the half. A shame he never got to showcase his touch, if he just got into a groove.

Bball team this year wasn’t very well-coached. The half-court offense stunk, they looked horrible until someone chucked up a 3 and if it went in. And they were pathetic against the press. Just laughing that a Big West team only used that in the tournament. Even when UH beat the press, the shot clock was used up by the time they got into their stuck-in-the-mud half-court set.

  24. Superstar Advertiser March 29, 2019 4:46 am

Not impressed with the AD. I’m certain we could find someone else to do his job, especially at the price we’re paying.

imo the modern AD in Hawaii needs to be out there facilitating the experience of sports/games as a cultural opportunity. The Game is a chance for fans to meet other people who love the game and/or the players as much as they do, and develop that bond.

I keep saying it, but people need to look beyond a football game as a chance to watch football. Imagine if people thought Game Day was a chance to have good food (not talking $7 fries and weak beer), and feed their interest in the sport with a sort-of museum that would show highlights of high school games from last weekend. Oh, and you get a college football game on top of that.

  25. Creative721 March 29, 2019 8:58 am

Ganot is a good coach. With that said, I hate to say it, but Gib Arnold was a heck of a recruiter in comparison to Ganot. Not sure if Ganot can recruit the players that can take UH Basketball to the next level. That remains to be seen.

  26. Aaron March 29, 2019 9:10 am

anyone can recruit if they are willing to break the rules and don’t mind destroying the team’s APR. I don’t buy the “Gib could recruit” line because if you can’t do it without causing harm to the program, you aren’t a great recruiter…

  27. NorthShoreFan March 29, 2019 9:15 am

    #21…Mahalo for the roster post…Truly “Polynesia’s Team”.
    IMUA ….

went down the list of UH football players and the one thing standing out the most was the “redshirt” tog before most names be it a freshman, sophomore, junior or senior

that is a good sign that coaches could develop each player??

  29. Mytake March 29, 2019 11:31 am

UH B ball needs more players from Cali, and I don’t mean Columbia.
