new thread up for Wednesday
14. will be asking the Big West about that. It seems unfair that if one school does it the rest don’t. I know it’s a money issue but in fairness to the sport, the teams and the conference, replay capability should be mandatory. I do think, however, given the number of poor calls last week, Hawaii would have run out of challenges early.
My feeling is, as in the NFL, if you challenge something and you win, you should keep the challenge and not lose it.

Above comment A: ” Wahine has all skills to be consistent at ~rank 20 in remainder of season.” Wishful thinking. It’s not going to happen. Not even close. Na Wahine just needs to concentrate on 1 match at a time, which is easier said than done when match in and match out Coach Ah-Mow Santos never knows who will show up with the “walk the walk” instead of the easy “talk the talk.”

Above comment B: So, beat CP and rpi would now be 40 or better? ………”RPI will move up to at most #39 if they win all the remaining games left.” RPI jumped this week because it’s non-conf. opponents (except for KS) had good (especially Oregon) RPI movements. That plus the fact that the Bows played against top-20 ranked RPI Cal Poly created that jump. But won’t be in the RPI top 40 unless they have Texas (from the same conf. as KS) or BYU (from the same conf. as Portland) as unscheduled opponents. Note how Cal Poly’s RPI dropped in spite of its W because they had to play then-ranked 100 UH.

Above comment C: “But they’ll need to seek an at-large bid just for winning the Big West conference.” Let’s get real. That at-large bid is out of consideration. They (UH) will have to win out (unless Cal Poly collapses, which conf. opponents kept hoping would happen to the Bows during the Shoji Era) and also win the tie-breaker to win the conf. title. Should Cal Poly lose, they would be in a very strong at-large-bid position. But this is distraction. Concentrate on first thing first. Go Bows!

The players are elite collegiate level athletes whose physical prowess matches most other teams but the difference in winning and losing is often execution, strategy, and game management. Ultimately it is mental preparedness and confidence, and this is the coach’s challenge. Too often you can see how one coaching staff handles players differently with different/better results. Saying “they” seems to relieve the coaches of any responsibility instead of saying “I”/”us coaches” need to do a better job. Admittedly winning is very difficult against good programs, but if you are competent and competitive you expect to win some of these matches and build from there. Players know how to compete but all the ingredients for winning comes from the coaches. We are going through growing pains.

It is still bad. Van Winden’s bad serving does not affect the Hawaii offense. Granato’s errors do. She can kill momentum in a hurry by another serve into the net or out of bounds. She is not even jump serving like Iosia.

Agree whole heartedly. It is easy to nit pick and be critical. As they say, hindsight is always 20/20. As hard as these girls play, sometimes they will win some and lose some. Let’s stand behind them regardless. GO BOWS!

Appreciate how our coach put it that the conference should be sending its best crews.

That said, how realistic is it to think that the Big West will get to the point soon where all schools have multiple cameras and/or replay capability? It seems logical to think that the athletes and coaches would want to win without doubts in their own minds, and better views and tools to use in making fair calls would be a high priority.

As for our players, they are trying. Sometimes they meet with success in a play or a match, and sometimes they don’t. If they’ve competed with honor and grit, and they don’t get a W on a particular day, as long as the event has been officiated fairly, my feeling is, that’s sports and life.

Looks like Granato has a better SA to SE ratio than Torrey of Cal Poly. Like Granato’s is 64.8 % and Torrey’s is 52 % , but Torrey has a higher hitting Pct.

In fact, Krug (6’ 1”) has natural blocking sense and Wahine missed her against van Windens. Hope Krug’s hitting skill gets refined and will be used in next few games. Also like to see more slide attack, some faking attack to support the real hitter (particularly, for Granato). Reminder, although Long Beach & CSUN labeled at 125 & 165, both can play at #35 level.

She is essential to team success. Maybe they need to hit smarter, but everything starts with passing. Burns should just commit, go up and swing, no hesitation. Transition game.

So, beat CP and rpi would now be 40 or better?
