If you block 7 balls (7 points) that’s less than 10%. Brittany Hewitt lead the nation in blocks, even with a bad back and not closing the block half the time. Her eye-hand coordination allowed her to make contact with many balls despite limited mobility. Like anything else the more you practice the more your eye-hand coordination improves. Hannah Tapp of Minnesota blocked Olivia Magill’s first shot by moving her hand to the ball. Previous to that PSU (using the standard double block) failed to block either of our middles.

rabbit ears is right. When Dave retires and you become the new coach, teach the girls your system of blocking.

Minnesota proved that the Wahine system (and positions in the system) was insufficient. So unless Granato and Mitchem are an order of magnitude better than their predecessors then it’s all just hope and smoke. Just expecting everybody to get much better is akin to Speraw and the USA Men’s Volleyball team.

The system must evolve into a vehicle that magnifies the Wahine strength (their height). It also wouldn’t hurt to improve their blocking by practicing “dynamic” blocking. (Where the middle blocker moves her hands to make contact with the ball as opposed to going straight up.)
