Looking at the bigger picture, Big West is trending toward one NCAA tourney bid. Currently, the Big West is a collective 31-29 non-conference. Last year, the league was 58-58 in non-conference play prior to the post-season (only UH went to the tourney). In 2013, when the league got 3 teams in the post-season, the regular season non-conference record was 64-50 (2013 was the year UH beat #1 Texas but subsequently lost the BW AQ; Hartong’s senior year; season ended by BYU). It helped that the team with the worst RPI of the three BW tri-champions won the AQ.

If UH does not win tonight, I don’t think they get into the tournament without the AQ, even if they share the conference title with another team. If UH wins tonight, they will have at least one top 25 win, and might get in without the BW AQ if they don’t lose more than one or two more matches.

Regardless, I think UH fans should be Poly fans. Root for them to win their matches except against UH, and hope Poly is ranked when UH plays them (and hopefully beats them, twice). Poly isn’t helping matters by losing to top 25 teams (even with both Van Winden sisters playing). UH has a middling to poor at-large resume right now.

rabbit, there is faith and there is data from six matches. BYU is the highest ranked team UH has faced to date, and UH is inconsistent from a passing and hitting perspective. I hope UH wins, but I wouldn’t bet the farm on a victory tonite. And if UH is looking to experiment with Maglio on the outside, this would be the match to do it. Best team UH will see for the rest of the season, so you want to gauge her performance against a quality opponent.

Mags needs to stay in the Middle. Howling seem ready to start full time.
I doubt Williams is ready currently. But Mags definitely needs to stay in and give us a back row attack.

BYU can go 6-0, 6-2, and 6-4 along the front, with 6-1 and 6-7 coming in off the bench. Robins-Hardy is the backup setter at 6-2. Lots of height on this team (they have 6-2, 6-3 and 6-4 sitting on the bench, 2 Fr. and 1 So.). Barring a setting performance we saw versus UCLA, this will be a long night…or rather, a very short night, like what Nevada is going through right now.
